    Charter.net cable open ports

I just switched from DSL to cablemodem (I am already starting to regret it) because the 1.5mb cable service was cheaper WITH cable TV than DSL 1.5mb without. (About $109 with all the premium stations). Unfortunately I discovered that they seem to block most incoming ports. I would like to be able to use either PCanywhere or VNC to get to my machine while on the road. I have tried but those ports are blocked. Does anybody know what ports they leave open on that network? BTW, I am using Charter.net in Central Wisconsin. Thanks for any info BTW, I had this all working beautifully before with the DSL :-(

    Log off loop

I had a machine dumped on me to fix. Windows XP SP1 Dell It loggs off immediately after logging in for Admin & normal accounts. Same thing in Safe modes. I can boot to an ERD 2003 CD and run symantec virus removal tools and it finds MyDoom, but it won't write a log to tell me which file is infected that it refused to delete :-( I am pretty sure I could fix it if I could log in, but it immediately logs out!!!!! Grrr! Help me log in please. Thank you

    Log off loop

Sigh. Oh well, I copied data off to a USB memory stick, and formated and re-installed clean.

    Log off loop

I have continued to pound on this to no avail. Using ERD, I edited the Registry to remove a couple suspicious entries in the RUN area, but no good. Then I reinstalled XP, no good, still have the same problem! I don't know what is causing the immediate logout, I could use some help here people.
  5. I have a small network using Win2k Server w/ Exchange 2000. I got a free copy of SBS2003 from MS at a training session and I am wondering how painful an upgrade it would be? Anybody try this? Is it worth it? I REALLY don't want to do a clean install, I would rather do an upgrade if that were possible. Thanks for any imput. Maurice
  6. I have set up Win2k SBS and the basic setup seems like it is working fine. Well now they want me to set up Exchange to host their internet email. They own several domains, so I am testing with a domain they don't acutally use yet. The box is set behind an SMC router and I have opened up Ports 25 and 110 pointing to the server. I went into the Exchange SMTP virtual server and set up the domain name, and set the administrator to have an email account with the new domain. I can send to the email acount fine, and it can send out to SOME but not all domains. This is what is driving me a bit crazy. The guy that was previously hosting their mail fixed the MX record properly (it appears) and if I do a telnet mail.theirdomain.com 25 it opens up fine. I don't understand why it can't send out to some domains but not others. Any hints? Is there a problem with running Exchange behind a router as long as the ports are forwarded properly? Thanks for any pointers. I did buy a $50 book on Exchange 2000 and have been reading it, but I have not found anything obvious that I have done wrong yet ...

    Exchange SMTP almost working :-(

Clutch, Ok I shut down port 110. I started the SMTP log file. Dumb question... How do I read the log file? I can see the file, but it is not in a format that is easily readable, and it is locked when Exchange is running. So much to learn, so few brain cells

How awful is it upgrading from Win2k to SBS2003?

Oh yeah, and the other thing is that the previous version is NOT SBS so I would not have two SBS's running on the same network. Does that mean that I could set up a second server to upgrade the exhange from the first one?

How awful is it upgrading from Win2k to SBS2003?

Well it is a FULL version that does not expire. I do want to learn the new version. It sounds like my best bet might be a clean install, but just out of curiosity what is the pain in the Exhcnage upgrade?

    Terminal server

Do you need the TS License Server, even if the clients are all Win2k or XP? I thought they automatically had licenses? If not, does anybody have any idea what cost is involved for just a couple users? I am trying to set this up as an alternative to Pcanywhere so we don't need to tie up multiple machines for multiple logins.
  11. I would like to find a small fax server that uses a standard faxmodem, that can be placed on a Win2K server. Winfax Pro does NOT work on Win2k Server, although it can be networked with a NON server. Preferably the program would be one that does not take a huge amount of memory or space. Any recommendations. PS, if the program let Winfax as a client, that would be a plus.

    DNS question

Others must have run into this issue: Server is set up using the Domain name company1.company.com Then they develop a web site hosted at www.company.com but the local DNS server won't let any local users find it. What do you do to point to the true internet address instead of the local server? Thanks for any help.

    DNS question

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't understand how I create this alias. When I go into the DNS server, where do I do this, in the Forward Lookup Zone? And what type of record do I create. It seems when I create an Alias, it won't let me type in a name like www.company.com (no dots allowed and 15 charactor max). ;( Thanks again.

    DNS question

I explained it badly. The server is on a local subnet 192.168.0.x they need access to the EXTERNAL website hosted outside their network. Right now, using the server's DNS server, they can not hit www.company.com. If I change their settings to use their ISP's DNS server instead of the local DNS server, they can hit www.company.com If I set them to use their local DNS server, they can go anywhere on the Internet EXCEPT www.company.com Thanks
  16. I am trying to fix a machine, it seems to start to boot fine, but then flashes a blue screen so quickly, you can't read it and it reboots. I boot with a WIN2K boot disk, it can't find the installation directory so repair fails. I don't have a repair disk. The machine was originally a Win98 machine upgraded to Windows2000 which ran very stable for about a year. Why is Win2k so dumb about finding the install directory. I booted off of a ERD2000 CD and it finds the c:\windows directory but it does not identify the OS. So, is there anything to do but clean install the OS and then all the apps (groan)? Thanks for suggestions.
  17. Just wanted to post my solution: I booted from a ERD2002 boot cd, found the c:\windows\repair directory and moved the software file to c:\windows\system32\config. This let the machine reboot.
  18. NO Emergency Recovery Disk. I did run FIXMBR & FIXBOOT. No, it's NTFS. I ran CHKDSK and it found some problems & fixed them. The hard drive seems fine. As I said in my original message, I know I can do a re-install, but that means I have to re-install ALL the apps, and I am trying to avoid that. Just thought maybe there is a way to re-create the ERD with some other app or through the console. Thanks.
  19. OK, to begin with I am talking about a home server test setup, which I use for teaching myself before inflicting my limited knowledge on others :-) At any rate, I set up two WIN2K servers with AD, and that is working fine. Now I want to retire the original server. The question is: If I run DCPROMO to demote the first one, will the second one take up the slack or do I need to move services over manually? Any good readme howto articles on this? Thanks

If you prefer to do this through CLI, then use ntdsutil.exe. Unless DC1 provided DNS, DHCP, WINS, DFS Root, then that should do it, otherwise transfer those services and/or correct IP configs to DC2. OK, I understand some but not all of your FLA & TLA's. GC=Global Catalog DC1=Domain Controller 1 DNS, DHCP,WINS I know. Could you explain the others, or point me to a good primer.

    Charter.net cable open ports

Alec, I can connect and download to my heart's content, when I am doing it in the local subnet. The problem is when I try it from out in the "real world" of the rest of the internet. From the Internet, PASV gets through to CONNECT, but not for downloading. I can't list a directory. And BTW, I am NOT using IIS's FTP, I am using a third party FTP program that worked fine when I did not have CHARTER.

    Charter.net cable open ports

Just another followup: I managed to do a work-around that I don't love, which is using the HTTP protocol on an alternate port, with security. It is a pain to administer, if I want to add other users (just a couple, but still). I have continued to try to get the ftp to work. I know it works fine from within my subnet, but from outside in the real world, no joy. I have tried the PASV mode that does not work. I have tried the command line mode, as with the PASV, I can log in, but the minute I try to get a directory, it hangs. As I understand it, the port you assign to the FTP server (like 21) is the communication port, and the (port-1) (like 20) is the data port. It would appear that the data port is blocked no matter what I am doing. Is it possible that Charter can detect any FTP data even on alternate ports? To repeat, I am using ALTERNATE ports for FTP since 20-21 are blocked. I have tried 210, 2100, 5702 just for grins. All work the same way, login is fine, but no directories. And, I always open two ports in my router, the main one, and the main one minus 1.

    Charter.net cable open ports

I have been pounding on this ALL day, and no joy whatsoever. The GOAL is to be able to download files when I am out in the field. Things I CAN get going: http if i use a high port, like 5700 vnc using it's standard ports What I can't get going is an FTP server. I have tried several servers including FTP serv-u and WS_FTP's server. I have done port forwarding etc. Charter clearly locks the use of port's 20&21. I am now thinking that maybe I should just use some alternative program, not FTP, but it would be nice if I did not have to install a client program which was the beauty of FTP. Any suggestions for accessing files (VNC does not) remotely on a non-standard port? Thanks

    Charter.net cable open ports

OK, it appears that maybe when I started out, Charter was blocking more ports because of the slammer worm this weekend. It appears now that they block servers on 21, 80, and POP & SMTP. I have no problem getting VNC to work with ports 5800 & 5900. Howerver, I have not been able to get an FTP server to work. I have been testing this by using PCanywhere to go to one of the sites I have to help, then trying to FTP back. On my end I am running FTP_Server_U. I have tried setting it to port 2100 and I opened up 2099 and 2100 on the router as I understand (or hope I understand) that FTP uses the main port and that port -1. At any rate, using internet explorer, I do an ftp://my.ip.address:2100 and it lets me start to log in, but then it stalls when it tries to scan the directories. Any clues as to what is going on there? Thanks
  25. Anybody have enough experience with these to make a recommendations. It seems that there have been a few out there for a while and that they should be maturing enough to actually become useful. I am looking for recommendations. Thanks
