I meant the kind of program that moves Mail, settings etc from one desktop to a new one. Very often a plain backup does NOT do a good job. For example, saving RULES in Outlook Express, Favorites etc. It is VERY easy to forget to move a bunch of these settings, and Microsoft does not make it easy. The OE Rules are deep inside the registry with a userid imbedded in them that you need to search and replace to move to a new desktop. Programs like Alohabob, Acronis etc. are advertised to do this, but I have a feeling that personal exprerience will show that some are much better than others. I was looking for that kind of response. Thanks

I could add that I have in fact installed a Lite-On burner under NT, but as I remember, there were some issues as to which burning software worked under NT. That will be your biggest issue.

This is wierd. After switching from 768K DSL to 1.5MB cable, on my main machine it seems like web pages take a REALLY long time to finish loading. I have gone to DSLreports.com and I am getting my 1.5mb speed, and when I download from newsgroups, you can see the pipe fill up nicely in my DUmeter. But it seems like web pages are finishing slower. On another similar machine I have, it does not take as long. All machines running Windows 2000, IE6.01 SP1. Especially slow are the graphics downloads, sometimes 30 seconds to finish a page. Any suggestions? BTW, the reason I switched to cablemodem from DSL was this: My 768K DSL was costing me $50'month. My Expanded Basic cable without HBO etc. was costing me $50/month 1.5MB Cablemodem with Digital Cable with 18movie stations costs me $109/month. So I got 18 movie stations and 1.5mb instead of 768 for $10. I do know that my upload speed is worse with cablemodem then DSL, but I wouldn't think that this would be the result.

After much frustration: I joined microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser newsgroup to search for some discussion of my problem. I found a link to this discussion http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&am...lr%3D%26hl%3Den Which mentioned the SAME problem. At any rate I downloaded a program called CableNut http://www.cablenut.com/ which does some registry tweaks and suddenly my IE is working FINE again. Thanks to all who listened to my rants and raves trying to solve this problem. Just though I would share the solution.

1) I updated the firmware on the Linksys router, which reset everything. No help. 2) I plugged my machine DIRECTLY into the Linksys Cablemodem. No help. Once again, it runs fast for downloads, I can go to www.dslreports.com and run the speed test and it gives me good speeds. If I download some binaries from a newsgroup, my DUMeter indicates that the pipe is filling up to the advertised speed. But my IE browser just does not finish loading all the graphics etc., for example right now all as I edit this, all the little emoticons have not filled in, just a bunch of boxes with red "x"s in them, after a couple minutes. This really seems IE related, but I have not had any success even after re-installing Win2K and Uninstalling and re-installing IE6.01 SP1. On another note, I tried installing Norton Personal Firewall 2003 to see if it would detect some wierd stuff going on, on reboot I got a BSOD with a message about not enough irp_locations. MS KB recommended upping the IRPSTACKSIZE to 15 (decimal), I tried and it did not help. Of course, I could not uninstall it (that would be too easy), so I had to download RNIS.EXE from Symantec to remove it. Then the machine rebooted fine (phew--another hour lost).

Well, dfolder doesn't work with Windows 2K or XP and I have to say that I don't really like the user interface with Spacemonger (although the price is right!). The one I like (but it costs) is bundled with PowerDesk 5. www.ontrack.com It is called Size Manager, and it lets you see the entire tree or a subdirectory tree, which can be sorted by large to small. I use it to do my purges of old, humongus stuff clogging up the arteries of my hard drive. Once you find a bloated directory you can right click on it to explore it. Typically I end up burning CD's and moving stuff off. (DVD's soon)

I have come to the conclusion that I should do one of two things: 1) Build a new machine, clean install Windows 2000, move my data: the problem being a HUGE amount of time getting it re-installed as I do a lot of graphics arts etc, and there are MANY programs that need to be installed, patched etc. TWO DAYS at least time wize. 2) Upgrade to XP SP1. I am not so fond of XP, I believe it is slower overall than Win2K, but I am thinking that it would at least replace all system files and make it close to a clean install without having to replace/Reinstall all apps. Any opinions ????

I am so confused as to what this is about with the IE6.01 SP1 being SO SLOW. Things I have tried lately: 1) Re-install IE6 2) Install a second NIC 3) Reinstall Windows2000 (painful & no help) 4) Double check all DNS stuff Once again, the two machines hooked into the KVM at my desk have COMPLETELY different speed. On the left hand (main) machine, IE crawls. www.nytimes.com takes 45 seconds to mostly load, often with missing pictures. On the right hand (mess around, try out new software etc) machine, it loads in about 6 seconds complete. I have run the IE 6 repair routine. 5) I started going through the control panel and using the Add/remove hardware to remove old "hidden" devices that no longer exist on this machine, looking for NIC related stuff. The main (left) machine is Soyo Dragon Platinum 333 w/ AMD XP2200+, 1GB RAM, two 80gb WDJB drives in RAID 0, with a fast Nvidia card. The right hand machine is running Nforce mboard with ATI-Radeon All-in-wonder 512mb, AMD XP1800+. And once again, the problem seems IE related at least to a degree. The Opera web browser completes pages better on the main machine, although it does not really run as fast as the right hand machine with IE. What AM I MISSING????

I avoided using ANY of their software. I am using the exact same IE as before. It is NOT branded, it is downloaded from MS. There are NO proxy settings. Once again, the connection works VERY fast on other machines on the same LAN. (My home lan has 7 machines including a Win2k Server). Naturally my main machine is the one having problems.

Ok, I have discovered that if I use Opera 6.05 instead of IE 6.01 sp1, the pages finish MUCH quicker. I don't think we are just looking at Opera's inherent speedier performance here. So, once again, is there something that might be sludging up IE6's performance. you might ask, well, why don't I just switch to Opera. Well it is tempting, but I don't want to give up ROBOFORM which only works in IE6 right now. I do a lot of shopping on the Internet and Robotform helps filling those forms very nicely. Once again, this just seemed to become a problem with the upgrade from DSL to Cablemodem. Thanks for any help

I double checked all my TCP settings and they seem right. I find it strange that this seems to happen more on one machine then others. I re-installed IE6.01 just to make sure it was not corrupted. I ran Window Washer to clean out cache stuff. Any other hints?

Please bear with my ignorance on this one: One server, using Windows2K, Active Directory. It was set up as the only server in the domain. Let's call it. yada.yada.local It is set up with a connection to a DSL router. The machines can connect fine to the internet using the gateway set to the router, and the two sets of DNS numbers provided by DSL provider. The problem with this is logon to server is slow. People here told me that you need to set the FIRST DNS to the server's IP address if you don't want to wait a minute each time you logon. Unfortunately it does not seem to be forwarding the DNS from the DSL provider. Where does this need to be put in the DNS service to forward properly? Thanks, and sorry for missing something which is probably quite obvious.

Well I wish I understood this better. Let's clarify a couple things. 1. They can't afford more than one server, so any DNS servers are going to be on the one and only server on this network. 2. The server's IP is set to a local IP 192.168.1.20 and there IS a NAT router that is NOT doing DHCP (the server has that set up). So if I look in the Administrative Tools/DNS it lists the server and I do properties and it says for Name Servers, it has the server name and the IP address for the server. The General Tab is set to Allow only Secure Dynamic Updates. and Active Directory-integrated. The WINS server is setup and WINS Lookup is enabled. Should the DNS servers provided by the DSL ISP be listed there (in the forward lookup zone) as well?

I have a clients computer that has developed some bad sectors on the hard drive (WD 40gb 7200rpm) and when it runs chkdsk on boot up, it finds quite a few unreadable sectors, and the OS looks pretty messed up. What I tried to do was run Ghost 7.0 to move whats left to a new hard drive, after which I would re-install Windows 2000. Unfortunately both Ghost and DiskImagePro 5 complain about CRC errors and won't let me copy even when I select the "copy anyway" options. The hard drive is NOT making the awful clicking sounds I would normally associate with dying hard drives. Any suggestions as to a software solution to move the remaining data to a new hard drive??? I am setting up a new small network (10 users). In the past I have installed active directory by default, but I am wondering if there is really any advantage in a small network like this. Wouldn't the server run faster withouth AD installed? Are there compelling reasons to install AD on a single server small network?

This client really has no need for a second server. So, once again, what is the ADVANTAGE of AD on a single server 10 user network?

If we are talking about one server, the accounts are already centralized, right?

A friend asked me this one, and I am stumped. I know that when your run the Network ID wizard in Win2K WS on a network with a Win2K server, at the end of the wizard, it asks you if the person should be granted higher privledges. Now my understanding is, if you set them to Administrator, it is of their LOCAL machine, NOT the whole domain, right??? And if that is correct, and this is the real question, how do you promote somebody's network account so that it is Administrator to the local machine? I don't think you would do this on the server, as you can only set them to an Administrator of the domain, and on the local machine, it only lets you tweak local accounts that are not network accounts, right? So, is the only way to upgrade them to Administrator of the local machine, to run the Network ID wizard, which will probably end up creating a SECOND similarly named account, where they give you that choice. Ok here is the deal. My client's business got purchased by an out-of-town company, and they up and took the NT4 server out of the office a couple weeks ago. I now have the task of installing a new server with Windows 2000 and I would like to do this a smoothly as possible. The problem as many of you probably know is whenever you log a Windows 2000 workstation into a new server, it creates a new profile and all the users settings etc get semi-lost. (they exist in the system but are difficult to access. My question is, how can this be done easier? Right now, I do a save of there internet cookies & favorites, make a note of the location of any PST files for outlook, save those settings if possible (difficult for some settings). Then I let the new server know about the machine, it creates an account for the machine & user. Then when the user is logged in, you import the IE cookies & favorites, move the docs into the CURRENT "my documents" directory, and re-create or re-import the outlook settings. Any better way? PLEASE HELP.

Have you actually tried this? Does it work? The cookies and faves are easy to save in IE (export). Oh yeah, another bugaboo is saving account info in Outlook. I often have to recreate that.

I am sure this has been asked before, but can't seem to find the info through searching. According to MS you can't upgrade Windows ME to Windows 2000, but I thought perhaps somebody has come up with a workaround besides doing a clean install, and therefore having to re-install all the other applications. Any pointers to articles etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
