This one has been plaguing me for some time and thru some builds now .. Unreal Tournie, and other UT Based games (Rune and Deus Ex that i know of at least) have issues on and off with the sblive. Distorted and crackly sound. Often quiting and reloading will fix it, but sometimes it still persists. It only affects the game, other apps still play fine. Tried with both the drivers at install time, and the ones from WindowsUpdate .. no difference .. havnt been game enuf to install creative's win2k drivers .. anyone have any ideas on this problem?

just curious, is this just a win2k(nt?) 'feature', but when i browse the network and access a machines list of shares, it takes a notibly long time to get a responce. iv reinstalled windows a number of times on both machines, and yet refreshing/loading either are slow. once its got the list of shares, everythign is instant, and transfers are fast, just browsing. not sure whats going on. anyone got any ideas? ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

you people dont read very well do you .. he already said: "It's no use killing in MSCONFIG because it just the OS just sticks it back in and loads it anyway..." obviously other parts of liveware set back theyr startup entries of theyr siblings. Possibly one way to start it loading is to move the exe that it runs .. perhaps replace it with somfin else that will just run and quit .. or another app that you want to run at startup perhaps ..

this seems to affect all UT based games .. simple fix, disable DirectSound in the options .. after that no more crackles..

I have the ASUS V6800 (geforce 1) at the moment, upgrading to an ASUS V8200 gf soon .. however i believe ASUS have been using the same tvoutput chips on all theyr geforce cards .. including the gf3 .. I can't get the drivers to actually do tv out properly, however TVCC2000 works flawlessly with it. Should also work on a gf3 id guess...

i have an ASUS V6800 .. a newer card and possibly different in the capture system (a different chip, i know that much .. ) AsusLive works fine .. as an application .. however i need to of course install the Capture driver .. when i install this it seems to go ok, asks to reboot, et al. When i do reboot, i get a bluescreen during startup. I can F8 and Last Known Good configuration to get back into windows without the driver .. but iv not yet got it working. Hopefully ASUS will bring out a new cap driver soon ..

this error, "unmountable_boot_volume", is not the same as inaccessible_boot_device .. whcih is caused by raid controllers and the like (less of a problem in xp, seems to have a much larger driver database) .. unmountable boot volume i had at one stage after attending a lan night .. dont ask me what caused it, i never figured that out, but, i do know how to fix it without loosing your hdd data. Simply boot off your winxp cd, and when it starts the setup prog, choose Repair, instead of install (Not the Press f2 thing, go past that) .. go to a recovery console on your winxp system (it might ask you which to repair, if you have multiple) .. this will get you a dos prompt, once there, type CHKDSK /F C: (or whatever letter your boot drive is) .. this will run a "Scandisk" on it .. and fix some errors, with any luck, you can just reboot once its done and windows will load fine.. mine did anyway. Good luck with it

I had this, or something like it in buld 2428. Just fixed it this morning. It was broadcasting like crazy, only 2 or 3k/sec tho. not enough to bring down the network in anyway, but annoying, coz it messed up my graphs. Anyway, i finally discovered what it was, its the "Universal plug and Play" support.. there is 2 services running by default to support plug and play network devices, whcih iv never even heard of anyway. It seems to be scanning for devices. Stop the 2 services, and it stops broadcasting.

Hi, im having trouble finding out how to change the extended memory amount available to a CMD Dos Propmt in win2k. Im trying to get an old game to work, without having to set up a multiboot for one game The game reports out of extended memory. Any ideas? the game is loadstar if it makes any difference.

im now forced to use classic mode for everything (which brought back the ctlr alt del options box, instead of straight to task list) since when i added a few new users, the Administrator account promptly disapeared. since one of the other accts i had made had admin axs, i used that to disable the graphical login, and it logs in fine if i type in the Administrator and password, just doesnt show on the GUI. weird. I hope in teh final you get options of using some elements from the new i/f and some from the old. would be nice to keep teh gui login and shutdown, but also have teh ctrl alt del options box

in the final, it'll absoluutly kick ass. i managed to crash explorer by changing directories while the "burning to cd" box was up, whcih in turn coastered the cd. easy cd was able to recover the cd by closing the session and opening a new one after it (itd only written about 100 meg in small files) so i coudsl resume the cd and all was fine, but since then iv got used it.

Has anyone seen this? STOP 0x0000001E booting Whistler?
Lord-Data replied to Greg S Trouw's topic in Hardware
this wont narrow it down much for you, but its a driver issue. has it always done it? or only since youv installed/updated a driver? -
makes you wonder how said clueless people actually managed to aquire a .. well.. semi descent domain?

er, that compatibility thing is just an integration of the appcompat tool from win2k. All it does is when the app queries what OS its on, it returns a different string (NT4 or Win95), instead of win2k. therefore, fooling a few installers, and programs that check to make sure theyr on an "up to date" os. (a few EA installers come to mind..)
-
from memory (its been a LLOONG time) nfs4 in win2k would complain about needed windows 98, etc. i know the game ran fine on my banshee in win2k, i had installed it from my dualboot, and i believe appcompat works on the installer. does whistler solve this? or did you have to use the Compatibility mode thing?
-
fair nuf .. likely to be fixed for the final? or will these apps need updates?
-
ehe actualy now that i have a geforce, and not a 3dfx card, i dont need to worry about glsetup. when q3 first came out it woulda been useful, but now, i dont need it
-
curious, what is that Dispatcher initialisation error anyway? I've never seen it from win2k before, and now im getting it from a few things in whistler that worked fine in win2k. Exmaples are the self playing Diablo 2 expansion pack trailer, Web Position Gold, this gamespy thing obviously, and a few more i cant think of at the moment.
-
Did you have to poke it to get it to work? or did it just install with a doublelclick. the compatibility list is for apps/games that work *unmodified*
-
I use it by right clicking on the file(s) i want to put on the cd, and choosing Send to CD,or whatever its called. Then you right click on the drive in My Computer, and choose Write Now, or somfin similar (i dont have a burner in this PC at the moment, so i cant rememeber the exact names.

its on the cd for both win2k and whistler. all versions should have it id imagine. it installs a lot of other crap to, but might be fun to play with
-
GLSetup has a win2k version now? mm. interesting. might have to go hunt that down. and yea, tlist is useful eh ;P
-
one trick i just learnt, on the cd, in Support/Tools, is a program called tlist, run it from the command prompt as tlist -s. and it will show you what services are running under each SVCHost, matched with its PID. find the big ones in task manager, check em in tlist, and see if you really need that particular service.

I initialy had ICS working fine in whistler, now when i boot up, the sharing box is not selected, and when i tried to enable it to the first few times i got the message "Sharing Could not be enabled. Catastrophic Failure". Now when i try to do it (several reboots later) i get "Sharing Could Not Be Enabled. The System Could Not Find the Specified File." Which file is it refering to? anyone have this problem? I'm attempting to share the dialup adapter to my other macines on the LAN. it was working fine for a while.

er, thatd be, .. um.. 192 meg yes? tis what iv got. with default services (havnt bothered to tweak yet) with whistler professional a my bare set up statup apps, 100 meg of ram is being consumed. but given the executive paging, theres more than 92 meg physical free. after 'net connection and iv loaded up 2 mircs, a few IE's, outlook, icq, etc etc etc, everythign is using around 150 meg ram. not too bad really. about 20-30 meg over what win2k did at the same stages.
