only driver iv had fail is the driver for my promise UDMA66 card. whistler included drivers for it anyway (yah, no longer need to press f6 at startup for that one but i thought id give the latest release a shot. bad move .. bluescreen at startup but display, sound, modem, etc, everythign else is working fine. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

curious, where do we enable the startpage thing? it looks cool.. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

you dont say what the error is, so how can we say if its fixed im runnign beta1, and dialup ICS is working fine. just as it did in win2k ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

modifying your cd to make it bootable (perhaps you had a non bootable version from MS) is not illegal or *****. it is using perfectly legal files, etc. like thx said, keep the info files for whistler, instead of using the win2k ones. I was able to make a copy of my beta1 cd bootable using those instructions. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

that pause is in beta1, yes, but given theyv reduced teh startup time a lot from win2k, perhaps they just moved some startup functions from during the loadscreen to inside the graphicsup mode. to get the my computer icons back, go to Display properties, Desktop, Desktop Items, and select the icons you want. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

wow. i never knew about the cd burning part. wow. how well does it work? i dont have any blanks to try it on at the moment.. Reliable? what about CDRW support? ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

er, no, in whistler, not 2k or other OS. Whistler doesnt have the options in the normal place, if anywhere. It seems to need activedesktop to do its new interface stuff, like the icon selection. But if you find how to disable it, lemme know, as im sure it would be quicker and slightly more responcive without it. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

liveware 3 worked first got for me on beta1 (all iv tried). However, someone said they had a 5.1 working fully in whistler? It isnt bugged by the same limitations as win2k? I've been tempted to buy a 5.1 card (have a value at the moment), but have been follow the threads on creativs news server about the ac3 part of it (and all live's) not working in win2k, which rendered the extra 2 channels useless in win2k.. does whistler overcome this? All i really wanna do is be able to listen to be dvds in 5.1 without using a digital decoder.. the 6 analogue outputs woudl be fine. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

i'm having trouble with bpftp in whistler. when i have more than one copy of it open, and minimise them both to the system tray, one disapears, only the last one to go to the tray stays (and no, its nothing to do with the tray cleanup). its still running, and still on the process list, but all i can do is kill it. i cant get it back to the forground. anyone got any ideas? ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

curious, finally got round to installing Whistler as my main OS (around about a year since i swicted to win2k beta as my main os , and have found only one thing i dont like so far, and that is, on the task bar at the bottom, i like to have it set to 2 rows high, with teh address bar across the bottom, and the task list above it. Whistler doesnt seem to let you do this, will only let you put them side by side, which not only looks crap, is rather unworkable. Anyone know how to do this? ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

well, network bandwidth isnt exactly a problem for me at most times, its mainly at lan parties when i dont know the names/workgroups or other machines that i have to use it. Otherwise, locally, yes, i use direct accessing ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

curious, does your tv output work on it? Iv never actually tried that card in Win9x, but all i get from it when i enable TV out is a garbled (not ntsc on pal) picture. the card's jumper is set to PAL mode, and software is as well. i can JUST make out teh desktop in amongst the weirdness. lines everywhere. TV Tool lets me change a few things, i can get it into some form of colour by changing the output method, but beyond that i have no idea. Anyone got this card in win2k working with TV out? ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

Iv tried the NetOptomiser program from win2k, and used its disable paging exectuive and large cache options, but found they hate up way too much of my 192 meg ram very quicly, so i turned them off again, rebooted, but im not sure if its actually reverted or not. With all normal services i use, and my normal colection of 'net apps, my system used to consume around 130 meg ram. now it idles around 160, and wont stay still, and yet, task manager says i have 110 meg of pyshyical memory free! why is win2k stuffing around swaping to the hdd with so much real memory left unused? im sure its not done this before, i think its one of the tweaks, but the program reports theyr all off again. Anyone got any ideas? Im seriously stuck on this one. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

This question is kinda redundant now, i poked around in the registry, found the keys teh tweak was for, but they were all at default settngs. it was getting worse, so i re-installed. least everything is lean and small again if anyone does come up with a solution.. lemme know tho.. id be curious to know what i did to it ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

kev is right. VSync is the fps limiter. which is of course somewhat obvious when you think about it. if vsync is on, your syncronising redraw with refresh, ie, you cant go above your monitors refresh rate. Disable vsync and it will go higher (if capable). Vsync on nvidia cards in 99% of games wont cause a problem at all. If you see 'tearing' in your graphics, then try re-enabling vsync. you shouldnt notice this tho. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

why use winroute? win2k's built in filesharing does everything i need and more for the connections sharing.. no speed problems.. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

well, as long as they all have the same protocols it shoudl be fine my setup has ipx/spx and tcp/ip. i have my win2k machine set as 192.168.0.1, with internet connection sharing providing a dhcp server for the otehr machines on the network. theyr all set to automatic, with the dns and gateway fields filled in, and all is fine. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

hmm im not 100% sure bridging is the correct term for what i want to do, but ill desribe. I have a 10 machine coax lan set up, and a 5 port hub with no coax connections. i will have 3 more machines connected to each other via the 5 port hub, and i can put a 2nd nic into my win2k machine which is cat5 based. What id like to be able to do, is allow the 2 networks to talk to each other. Is there a simple way that win2k can do this? or do i need extra software to accomplish it? iv been told linux can do it, but i dont really feel like setting up an extra machine just to link the 2 networks, if my win2k machine can do it, then that will be great. any ideas anyone? ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

chances are your win2k machine can happily talk to the winme/win9x machines, browse them, but the win9x/me boxes cant browse teh win2k machine. well, thats what i had originally anyway. win2k is nt based, and tries to be secure. unless tehres a way to turn this off (which i dont know, any one got any ideas?) then you have to add the win9x machines to win2k's user list. Ie, if you have the win98 machine's login name and password as abc/def, you need to create a user to the same specifications on the win2k machine (users control panel), then the machine will work. Its good in a way, coz you can set shares for certain users only, etc. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

for those with the be6-2, the hpt366 can hibernate, just getthe latest drivers and bios for it from abit's website, and all is well. tho i had no end of problems with the controller i ended up disabling it and buying a promise udma card. from what i understand, the be6 should also be able to disable teh hpt366, its an option in the bios somewhere i believe ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

my v6800 deluxe idles around 55 degrees. active cooling makes squat all difference, so i dont run the program constantly. just every now and again to check on it. ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

grab a copy of Motherboard monitor 4.18 ... theres betas of version 5 out, but personally i HATE the new interface i have a minor problem with it tho (4.x and 5) that it doesnt seem to be able to accuratly constantly report the temperature. the voltage and fan speed works fine, but the temp will jump from between low 30's to low 50's and back again in a matter of seconds. if you work this one out, lemme know ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

_restore is a function of windows millenium.. the safety restore function. in system control panel you can disable this feature from the troublehsooting section. you should then be able to delete the folder ------------------ www.thewolfslair.com

yea i get this too. despite having power down settings to 3 mins in both bios and win2k power control panel, the drives on my UDMA cards both will not spin down. either from my onboard HPT366 (crap) or my promise ulta66 card, they wont sleep. but when connected to teh onboard normal ide chain, they sleep fine. Anyone got any ideas? i havnt tried any of it under anything but win2k, i dont know if they work in win9x
-
not exactly. well, not to my knowledge. i have one of my 2 drives as hotswapable. usually i just go into teh device manager, remove the hdd, then unplug it put teh new one in, and right click, and select scan for new hardware changes. it will find the new hdd, and off you go. repeat to restore the original drive. if your just removing one to use elsewhere, just remove it, and scan for changes when you get round to putting it back in the machine. might be a little more messing around, but i dont (think) win9x/me will let you actually SWAP the drive, with anotehr one of different type/size, as they require teh bios to know of the hdd.
