I just bought one of these mobo's, and I'm having two problems with it. I hope someone can help. #1) If USB is enabled, Win98SE (sorry!) locks up during hardware detection during installation. If it's disabled, it installs normally. But if I re-enable USB, Windows will lock up after it finds the USB controller, and won't even get as far as to look for drivers. Aggrivating. #2) I just bought a 4mb AIMM video upgrade from Crucial. Since this board is based in the Intel 815E chipset with integrated graphics, the AIMM should work, but it doesn't. Before the install, video memory is reported as 512k(?), but DirectX reports it as about 5 megs, and 38Mark 2000 says it's something like 33517k! Senseless. But even after the installation of the 4mb AIMM, none of the reported memory sizes changed. There are no options in the BIOS to configure the amount of video memory, either. I'm at a total loss, so any help from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks.

I agree with everyone else that going back to Windows 98 is a step in the wrong direction once you've used Windows 2000, but I disagree with your reasons why. Everyone's saying how unstable it is, how it BSOD's all the time, etc. etc, which is all true, to a point. Unfortunately, even a lot of experienced users still don't understand Win98's care and feeding, which I believe is the main reason for it's bad reputation. Lots of people still don't know the proper way to uninstall programs, update drivers, Scandisk and Defrag regularly, etc., which is pretty sad, really. The PC I'm using to type this is running Win98SE (sorry) that I installed sometime in January. It's survived three video card upgrades (along with numerous driver updates for the latest, a GeForce DDR), two network cards, two sound cards, two IDE controllers, and a few rounds of musical CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD-ROM and their required software. Add lots of installed and uninstalled games and the like, and you have the recipe for BSOD hell, right? Wrong. Win98SE has been fine for the most part. Not trouble free, of course, but nothing out of the ordinary, and certainly not what some people claim like BSOD's and lockups every time they turn it on, and I'm on this thing for a few hours every day. Now don't get me wrong here. I'm lucky enough to have three PC's, and my dual rig is running Windows 2000. Nothing beats Win2k for what it's designed for. It's solid and it's stable. But give Win98 a break. For surfing the web and playing games, it works fine. More often than not, it's the user who screws it up.

Yes, I sensed a slightly elitist tone to this guy's post which I thought was out of place, considering this is a forum designed to allow people to help others. So why is he complaining that he somehow HAS to help newbies with their questions? He doesn't HAVE to do anything here. Complaining about HAVING to answer questions in a support forum is kind of stupid, don't you think?? THAT was my point. I didn't post a reply to ThC 129 because what he said was offensive. I did it because what he said was DUMB. Have I made it clear enough this time? I'm sure you guys mean well and have helped out quite a few people who needed it, but jeezus. Very true, of course. But like exeter said, not everyone knows about the search feature. As a newbie who registered to post about three weeks ago, I only discovered the search feature last week. Of course it would have saved me some time, but if you don't know about the search feature, you can't use it, right? Sorry about the long post before, but 'tone' of ThC 129's post bothered me.

Well then let me apologize for all my fellow newbies who have just discovered this message board who came here looking for answers from experienced and friendly people. We are all very sorry for taking up your time. I didn't realize that it was your job and ONLY YOUR job to answer each and every question posted here. Since it's too much trouble for you, I guess we'll all have to get our tech support from the unshowered geeks working at the local Radio Shack, or maybe even find something helpful on AOL somewhere. Again, sorry. I hope you caught the sarcasm in that last post, because it was dripping with it. I would now like to take the time to say THANK YOU to all the FRIENDLY folks who have taken a few minutes out of their day to try and help their fellow PC users and abusers here. These FRIENDLY people have helped me get answers to and opinions on hardware and software issues that I needed help with, and they did it freely and with patience. THAT is what this message forum is for, and NOT for complaining that you're tired of answering the same newbie questions over and over. Remember- you were a PC novice at one point in your life, too.

Anyone know how to set my brand spankin' new Tiger 100 for Celeron 500's that use a 7.5 multiplier? I could probably make an educated guess if I studied the jumper chart long and hard enough, but I'd rather not fry a new $185 mobo, however unlikely that might be. I know that they're muliplier locked, and the bus speed is auto-detected by the BIOS, but I just want to be sure. Thanks, guys/gals.
