I just bought one of these mobo's, and I'm having two problems with it. I hope someone can help. #1) If USB is enabled, Win98SE (sorry!) locks up during hardware detection during installation. If it's disabled, it installs normally. But if I re-enable USB, Windows will lock up after it finds the USB controller, and won't even get as far as to look for drivers. Aggrivating. #2) I just bought a 4mb AIMM video upgrade from Crucial. Since this board is based in the Intel 815E chipset with integrated graphics, the AIMM should work, but it doesn't. Before the install, video memory is reported as 512k(?), but DirectX reports it as about 5 megs, and 38Mark 2000 says it's something like 33517k! Senseless. But even after the installation of the 4mb AIMM, none of the reported memory sizes changed. There are no options in the BIOS to configure the amount of video memory, either. I'm at a total loss, so any help from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does anyone know of any programs or regristry hacks that will bump up the mouse refresh rate in Windows 2000? Thanks.

I agree with everyone else that going back to Windows 98 is a step in the wrong direction once you've used Windows 2000, but I disagree with your reasons why. Everyone's saying how unstable it is, how it BSOD's all the time, etc. etc, which is all true, to a point. Unfortunately, even a lot of experienced users still don't understand Win98's care and feeding, which I believe is the main reason for it's bad reputation. Lots of people still don't know the proper way to uninstall programs, update drivers, Scandisk and Defrag regularly, etc., which is pretty sad, really. The PC I'm using to type this is running Win98SE (sorry) that I installed sometime in January. It's survived three video card upgrades (along with numerous driver updates for the latest, a GeForce DDR), two network cards, two sound cards, two IDE controllers, and a few rounds of musical CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD-ROM and their required software. Add lots of installed and uninstalled games and the like, and you have the recipe for BSOD hell, right? Wrong. Win98SE has been fine for the most part. Not trouble free, of course, but nothing out of the ordinary, and certainly not what some people claim like BSOD's and lockups every time they turn it on, and I'm on this thing for a few hours every day. Now don't get me wrong here. I'm lucky enough to have three PC's, and my dual rig is running Windows 2000. Nothing beats Win2k for what it's designed for. It's solid and it's stable. But give Win98 a break. For surfing the web and playing games, it works fine. More often than not, it's the user who screws it up. -

*sigh* Where should I begin to respond to this...? Since this is obviously going nowhere, I'm just going to bite my tongue and let you 'win'. Feel better? One thing, though. A comment like 'I do not consider you as being the type of person...' is pretty ridiculous, considering that we've only read two or so posts from each other. You must be incredibly perceptive to know what I'm capable of from simply reading a few lines I've typed. And that was one of the more intelligent things you had to say, unfortunately. Post your 'run home to mama' crap somewhere else.

Yeah, DeadCats, he really hurt my feelings. I couldn't sleep for days. *sniff* You're missing the point here. Yes, I sensed a slightly elitist tone to this guy's post which I thought was out of place, considering this is a forum designed to allow people to help others. So why is he complaining that he somehow HAS to help newbies with their questions? He doesn't HAVE to do anything here. Complaining about HAVING to answer questions in a support forum is kind of stupid, don't you think?? THAT was my point. I didn't post a reply to ThC 129 because what he said was offensive. I did it because what he said was DUMB. Have I made it clear enough this time? I'm sure you guys mean well and have helped out quite a few people who needed it, but jeezus. Not all newbies are new to computers and the Internet, just new to the board. Attitudes like that don't help anyone. Don't consider this a flame, DeadCats (or anyone else). If I feel the desire to flame someone, I'll do it at FiringSquad. That forum is like the Jerry Springer show!

Very true, of course. But like exeter said, not everyone knows about the search feature. As a newbie who registered to post about three weeks ago, I only discovered the search feature last week. Of course it would have saved me some time, but if you don't know about the search feature, you can't use it, right? Sorry about the long post before, but 'tone' of ThC 129's post bothered me.

Well then let me apologize for all my fellow newbies who have just discovered this message board who came here looking for answers from experienced and friendly people. We are all very sorry for taking up your time. I didn't realize that it was your job and ONLY YOUR job to answer each and every question posted here. Since it's too much trouble for you, I guess we'll all have to get our tech support from the unshowered geeks working at the local Radio Shack, or maybe even find something helpful on AOL somewhere. Again, sorry. I hope you caught the sarcasm in that last post, because it was dripping with it. I would now like to take the time to say THANK YOU to all the FRIENDLY folks who have taken a few minutes out of their day to try and help their fellow PC users and abusers here. These FRIENDLY people have helped me get answers to and opinions on hardware and software issues that I needed help with, and they did it freely and with patience. THAT is what this message forum is for, and NOT for complaining that you're tired of answering the same newbie questions over and over. Remember- you were a PC novice at one point in your life, too.

Can someone please tell me how to get Unreal to use my obviously capable GeForce DDR? I can see where the rendering options are listed under Advanced Options, but no matter what I click on or highlight, it still uses software rendering. I know this is a dumb-ass question, but I don't want to dig out and install my Monster 3D II just to play this one game in Glide. Thanks.

Anyone know how to set my brand spankin' new Tiger 100 for Celeron 500's that use a 7.5 multiplier? I could probably make an educated guess if I studied the jumper chart long and hard enough, but I'd rather not fry a new $185 mobo, however unlikely that might be. I know that they're muliplier locked, and the bus speed is auto-detected by the BIOS, but I just want to be sure. Thanks, guys/gals.

Yeah, I guess that's where I saw the answer before. I didn't even think about that when I posted here. Thanks for the reminder! -
Hmm... Looks interesting. Thanks again.

Anyone know of any cheap-but-good dual-processor motherboards? The Abit BP6 is pretty much unavailable at this point, so that's out. I saw a cheapo BX-based Slot-1 board made by Pine somewhere, but I have no idea where to get one, or something cheap like it. I'm not looking for onboard SCSI, NIC, or anything like that, just something to tinker with SMP. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Does anyone know if 3Com has released a W2K driver for their Gaming Modem? If it's on their site somewhere, I sure as hell can't find it. I'm trying to track down every last bit of W2K-specific software for my PC before I make the switch, but this last driver eludes me. Thanks to anyone who can help.

I'll give it a try! Thanks!

That did it, Wolf87! I knew I was missing something obvious! THANK YOU!!

Thanks for the reply, but I couldn't find any refrence to 'change device' anywhere in the disply options screen. There's something like that in Unreal Tournament (which looks great and plays fast on my setup), but not in the original Unreal. Unreal's Advanced Options menu has a 'rendering' field listed, and after patching it with v226 final, there are Direct3D and OpenGL options listed along with Glide, PowerVR, S3 Metal, and Software, but it doesn't tell you how to actually choose a rendering device, only that these API's are supported. I'm already running DirectX 7a and 6.18 refrence drivers. I'd like to play the damn game through to the end before it becomes ancient, but not being able to play it in all it's glory on a GeForce-based card is pretty lame. There's gotta be something I'm missing here, folks. Thanks to Jester, and anyone else willing to help.

Many thanks to wind, EM and GeOph! Just the kind of info I was looking for!
-
Thanks, wind. I appreciate the info! After doing a little more research, I came across two boards from Tyan: the BX-based Tiger 100 and the Via 133A-based Tiger 133. Anyone have experience with either of these?

What you guys keep forgetting to tell him is that the boot order in the BIOS has to be changed. Hopefully your BIOS will let you change the order so it will look at A: first, then SCSI, NOT C:! I've got a HotRod66 controller that works great with a boot sequence of A:, C:, SCSI, but only because the primary master drive on the motherboard is a DVD drive, and not a hard disk. If I had a HD on the motherboard's primary master, this boot sequence wouldn't work, because the BIOS would be trying to boot from it instead of the HPT66 controller. You have to do this in order to get everything to work the way you want it to when you hook it up. This will fix problem #1. Don't worry about #2, because the onboard IDE controller uses the PCI bus, just like the add-in controller. If using an add-in card decreased performance, no one would use them, right? As for #3, what you want to do isn't out of the ordinary in the least. Change the boot order, plug in the drives like you want to, then install W2K, but you have to feed it the HPT366 drivers when the installation asks for it!! Other than that, everything should go normally. Good luck.

Is there any good reason why your system doesn't have a floppy drive? Getting one installed/fixed would make doing things like this a piece of cake. A Windows 98 startup disk would be all you would need to do this.
