I had a SCSI drivedo the very same thing on me this year. It was working fine, been burning CD's all day, then the last CD I gave it to copy onto it messed up, something abotu a device under run. 30 CDR's later I discover the stupid thing has snuffed it, after 2 years of use it finally gives up the ghost, I was really annoyed. I tried it in 3 machines and got the same results. Some months later after I'd gotten a new drie I thought I'd dig out the old SCSI for something to do and see if I could get it going, and do you know what? The stupid thing started working again!! Its not your SCSI card, me thinks its the drive, try stuffing it in another machine, but if you get the same results then the drive has had it. Oh and don' belikeme and try it months later after you bought anew one, you might it still works, at the moment I've got a 4 Speed Panasonic CDR Drive that nobody wants to buy. Behemoth

For along time now I've been debating about formatting my hard drive and using Windows 2000 as my primary operating system. I'm currently running Windows 98 SE, and although I have dual booted and used Windows 2000 and liked it I always found that Iouldn't run some of my game too well. after a while however I found that my hard drive got ery messy At the moment this is what I'm using system for Games - these very from Quake 3 to Need For Speed 4 Internet College Work Programming in C Web design. My only real worry here is the games, but I'd really like to know if its worth me ditiching Win 98 all together, I won't use Win Me because I hate it, for some reason I find that it slows down my hard drive. Here is my systems specs AMD Athlon 550 (Slot) Gigabyte 71XE Main Board 192 Megs of Ram 20 Gig hard drive 32 Meg GeForce 2 MX Sound Blaster Live 256 50 Speed Cd Rom Drive 4x4x32 Phillips Cd Re-Writer. Thanks Behemoth

Thanks guys, decied I'm going to dual boot after all, the next time I format both my partitions now will probably be when I get my new system, with any luck should be with in 3 weeks, depending on how much the Athlon 850 is going to cost. I would go for the 1.2 GHz, but thats going to blow my budget Stil an 850 is gonna be plenty fast enough, and this crock of **** has just about had it. Oh yeah as for Need For Speed 4, I know some people who have got it working on Win2k, so I haven't given up on it quite yet. And yeah Win Me, its shite, Dad has it on his sytem and he swares blind its stable. Funny how every time he access control panel that it crashes!! Behemoth

AOL? Hmmm well its a very long story but it does boil down to the fact that there unmetred net access deal is one of the best around and that's why I'm with them. I hate the software and I've heard you can hack round thast with Dial Up Networking, but I haven't seen any such hacks yet. As for the speed well I'm ot complaining at a regular download speed of 5kb a sec. Behemoth

Thanks sandoval, I'm not a complete novice like some people are its just that before I made the change, which I think I will be tomrrow I needed to know ifWin2k was for me. When I've trie dit before I have always been impressed with its sped and stability and its memory management has always impressed me. The reason I've been thinking about changing is because I had to change my ISP to AOL and well its software seems to suck up alot of recources from Win 98 so I'm sat there smeotimes with 2% system recources free and I've got 192 megs of Ram!! Windows Me is just one big bug. I think its a nasty operating system, you may aswell call it a virus, thats a better description of Windows Me.

I had that problem when I changed from a Voodoo 1 based card to a Voodoo 3 card, I had to format my hard drive to remove all reference to my Voodoo 1 card, it worked nicely so I suggest you do the same to your computer. Its not working, well it reds CD's but will it write to them? Nope I've gone through 20 cd's alreadybecause the darn thing has messed up. It starts the readingprocess fine, from my CD Rom drive to my hard drive but when the CD writer starts wrting it stops as quickly as it starts, HotBurn (the software I use) spits the CD Writer tray out and gives me a device I/O error. It reads normal CD's fine, I've cleaned the laser, even re-installed the software and used a different brand of CDR's but I still get the same trouble. I get the same problem in Adaptec Esay Cd Creator. So its either oneof three things, SCSI cable, my Adapatec PCI SCSI card or the CD's I'm using. Anyone got an clues as to what happening, the drive was working like a charm last week! Behemoth
-
Thanks again guys, but the drive is definatley going in the bin when the new one gets here. I tried another SCSI card which I have here, an Advansys ISA card that came with the drive when I bought it and I am still having the same results with that as I am the Adaptec card. Behemoth

Thanks for the help guys, I checked for a firware update for my writer and I only upgraded it a month or so ago, but anyways the firmware version on the writer is 4.17, I'm on ASPI version 2 (I think) and up until all ths 2 weeks ago, I was getting no trouble with this writer, its really doing my nut. I know it termintated properly because it was the only SCSI device in my computer. I've tried that many diffeeent CDR brands I've got a nice lot of coasters now thats for sure. I've tried Trax Data, Aopen, Fuji Film and even some really crappy CD's that came with somethingI ordered as a freebie some time ago. My old 6x2x2 IDe Re-writeris workinglike a charm, but I've just this minute parted with it in exchange for some money to go towards my new writer when I order it next week, I've got a choice between a 32x8 SCSI drive, or a 32x4x4 IDE CDRW, both drives are alomst the same in price, give or take a pound or two, whats your recomendations ? Before I hand the drive over to the tip I'm going to put it into another computer if ti works in there I may well leaveit in that machione or sell it on with the ISA SCSI card that came with it orignally, I don't want to part with the PCI one just yet, I've got plans to get a SCSI Scanner in the future. Anyway thanks again. Will try out what you've told me, even though I've done it about 10 thousand time already! Behemoth

I was given a 3 gig hard drive yesterday, I know it pretty smal but anyway I'll cut to the chase. Upon running diagnostics on it I discovered that it had somewhere in the region of 17 bad sectors on it. Now I've heard that low level formatting the drive usually will cure this problem, but before I do so is it advisable? I want to use the drive to put Windows 2000 on to go in my system as an additional operating system for me to mess around with. My current 20 gig drive is nearing half full, and I don't fancy spending a good few hours re-partitoining and reformatting the drive as theWin 98 SE system is running really smoothly, well the only problem I have is with my CD Writer but I think thats because I have some really cheap blank CD's andmy writer is a little fussy over what CD's I write to, or its the SCSI cable. Anyhow the hard drive in question is a 3 gig Quatum Fireball 3200 AT, so before I go and low level format it I need to know if doing so will get rid of the bad sectors, although it doesn't matter either way, the drive was given to e anyway. I don't come here too often so if anyone reads this then please send a reply to my email address which is behemoth@nfsracer.com Thanks, Behemoth ------------------ ------ My Computer Atlon K7 550 Gigabyte 71XE MB 192 Megs of RAM 20 gig Samsung Hard Drive 16 Meg Voodoo 3 2000 AGP 50X CDROM 4x CDR SCSI Drive Adaptec PCI SCSI Controller Sound Blaster Live 256!

Thats ok, I thought as much, just aswell it was only given to me, didn't lay out any money on it thankfully. Oh well more hardd rives will come my way, I'll check see if the Quantum is under warranty though, there maybe a month or two left. I happen to think that Win 98 SE is the best o/s of the Win 9x series, works like a dream for me on my system. I didhave Win2K installed, I probably will putiback in aghain soon but for now Win 98 SE will do just fine. TRy getting your computer up and running again after a format in 30 mins I made an imageof my HDD with Norton Ghost and put it onto CD, so instead of waiting agaes for my 18 gig hdd to format I just get a boot floppy going, load up Norton Ghost and put the imaghe of my system on from when it was working! But yeah if I did it normally I can be up and running in 1hr and 40 mins. ------------------ ------ My Computer Pentium II 350 Gigabyte 6BXC M/B 16 meg Voodoo 3 2000 AGP 128 Meg of RAM 18 gig Western Digital Expert HDD UDMA 66 Sound Blaster Live ! 256 56k Modula Tech V90 USB modem 4 x SCSI writer Advansys Host SCSI controller

Would WinME Final run well on a Pentium 166 laptop with 80 m
Behemoth replied to pr-man's topic in Legacy OS
Yup Win 2K would be pretty cramped in there, my Win 2K folder is 1.07 gig on size, ouch! Well I have an 18 gig hard drive so I'm not too worried about it. ------------------ ------ My Computer Pentium II 350 Gigabyte 6BXC M/B 16 meg Voodoo 3 2000 AGP 128 Meg of RAM 18 gig Western Digital Expert HDD UDMA 66 Sound Blaster Live ! 256 56k Modula Tech V90 USB modem 4 x SCSI writer Advansys Host SCSI controller -
Is Windows ME Realible I would like to hear form users
Behemoth replied to hotrod1629's topic in Legacy OS
My mate has Win ME or well he's getting it soon and its a coming my way! But anyway th eonly thing that gets right up my nose about Win 2K is that I can't playt games, well I cam, I can play Quake 3 but thats about all. So I'm thining about going back to Win 98 first edition for a while or even Win 98 SE, not sure yet, but booting out of Win2K and into Win 98 just to play nfs hs is a real pain in the a$$. Also none of the editing tools work either. Biut I guess this is the real pain in the padded a$$, my CD writer I can't get SCSI drivers for my SCSI 2 card so I'm really stuffed. Oh well trhe thing I love about Win 2K, stability, PC not crashed for 3 weeks, and the fact that the internet just flies along even on my 56k V90 modem !! And paying for an o/sper month ? MS can't enforce that, thats just stupid, its like paying for your electrcity/phone/gas who'd wanna do that ??? ------------------ ------ My Computer Pentium II 350 Gigabyte 6BXC M/B 16 meg Voodoo 3 2000 AGP 128 Meg of RAM 18 gig Western Digital Expert HDD UDMA 66 Sound Blaster Live ! 256 56k Modula Tech V90 USB modem 4 x SCSI writer Advansys Host SCSI controller -
Who'd want to upgrade Win 2K with Win ME anyway ?? The only thing that annouys me about Win 2K is the lack of gaming support and I do allot of games editing like making addons etc I'm thinking of going back to just having Win 98 on my system as I'm getting tired of booting out of one o/s and into another if I want to play some games. Might get hold of Win ME and see what thats like, a friend of mine has it and his coment was "kinda looks and feels like the love child of WIN2K and Win98 ;p" Make of it what you will. ------------------ ------ My Computer Pentium II 350 Gigabyte 6BXC M/B 16 meg Voodoo 3 2000 AGP 128 Meg of RAM 18 gig Western Digital Expert HDD UDMA 66 Sound Blaster Live ! 256 56k Modula Tech V90 USB modem 4 x SCSI writer Advansys Host SCSI controller

Hmmmm are you guys using the beta version ?? I've not had any trouble with either the beta or the final release, oh yeah it also helps if you have more than 64 meg of ram on your system too. ------------------ ------ My Computer Pentium II 350 Gigabyte 6BXC M/B 16 meg Voodoo 3 2000 AGP 128 Meg of RAM 18 gig Western Digital Expert HDD UDMA 66 Sound Blaster Live ! 256 56k Modula Tech V90 USB modem 4 x SCSI writer Advansys Host SCSI controller

Somone certainly has a bee in his bonet or sure as hell sat on one. Ok I know I'm a newbie here but I'm not dumb like some people are.

Odd I've had no problems at all with Win 2K other than I can't get drivers for my SCSI card. I don't know ne 1 else around me that runs Win 2K either so I'm unable to help further. ------------------ ------ My Computer Pentium II 350 Gigabyte 6BXC M/B 16 meg Voodoo 3 2000 AGP 128 Meg of RAM 18 gig Western Digital Expert HDD UDMA 66 Sound Blaster Live ! 256 56k Modula Tech V90 USB modem 4 x SCSI writer Advansys Host SCSI controller

Netstat on Win2k with SP1 works fine for me, you must have a corrupt file or something. ------------------ ------ My Computer Pentium II 350 Gigabyte 6BXC M/B 16 meg Voodoo 3 2000 AGP 128 Meg of RAM 18 gig Western Digital Expert HDD UDMA 66 Sound Blaster Live ! 256 56k Modula Tech V90 USB modem 4 x SCSI writer Advansys Host SCSI controller
