Does frequent ram replacing damage the ram (or the slot)
CyberGenX replied to Tomay's topic in Hardware
You can also get a nice charge by not unplugging the computer when you change ram or other devices. I Was swapping a NIC one time and forgot to unplug, the darn machine came on and started loading Windows with the NIC still hanging half way out!!! The NIC died from the spark. -
You couldn't make that scenario any worse by formatting. I bet you half the problems go away right after a fresh install of what ever OS.

Try plugging in a headset and see if yer speakers are the prob.
-
Try tweaking the .cfg files, game speed, max FPS, etc.

Either no admin rights or you may have (A) Corrupt install of windows/corrupt system files or ( A nasty virus.

I use NAV Coporate 7.51 on my 2K and XP boxes. All you have to do is replace the sevinst to the new one and it works fine in XP.

Ok this is one of the strangest problems. Please help.

I tried Mandrake 8.2 for a while, still not enough app support to warrant a "main OS switch". I am a huge LinuX fan, but just wish that it would support 80% as much as MS's. -

Rephrase: Most headaches come from regular users misunderstanding of Windows and how to use it. -

Ok so your saying that MS Windows OSes do not cause people headaches? That it's all the fault of VIA and other hardware manu.s! -

You know now that you mention it, it could be MS, the old Wintel alliance striking down VIA before 2K's release, this would impact VIA just like it is now. No, what I was saying is that MS is the cause of the majority of computer headaches, not VIA. My point being that if it is a "headache" to double click a driver-set and reboot you shouldn't be jacking with OS installs or what have you to begin with. -

Here we go with the Intel thing again... x) My machine works great, never got one headache. No Intel inside. Both Intel and AMD are great just avoid buying sh^tty complimentary components and you'll do fine. Double click on VIA 4in1 for VIA chips and reboot. For Intel chips it's 1 less reboot. The headaches come from MS. -
You could've tried to rename the file to .ZIP, .RAR, .ACE, assuming you have WinZip, WinRar or WinAce. Sometimes people will rename a file when sharing online to avoid detection by software police

Windows Messenger Still Runs In Outlook XP...
CyberGenX replied to ShoeHornOPlenty's topic in Software
Do what I do, Create 2 batch files in the messenger folder that renames msmsgs.exe to ????.exe and vice versa. Then create a shortcut on your desktop to the bat files. That way you have control over the .exe. When you want to run messenger simply run the bat file that names it back (maybe even calls it after the rename). Otherwise Outlook and Outlook Express as well as a few proggies will call msmsgs.exe. -
:x Just upgraded to 2 New Maxtor 80Gig 7200RPM ATA 100 drives with the 8MB Cache Buffers. A great deal at $106 each. Will be running IDE RAID 0 Stripe. I have run both XP and 2K SP2, now I am toying with the idea of XP again. My first few eXperiences were not that great with XP, being an OEM builder and on there beta lists I had XP LONG before it was out. This will be the last upgrade for the year and I want to run the superior OS. What do you think now that SP1 for XP is out and SP3 for 2K has been out for a longer run. I use the computer for everything, gaming, internet, All office apps, Digital Photo editing, Digital and Analog video editing (Adobe Premiere) and Visual Basic work and animation. While I wait for the drives to ship I could use a little input...

Now What's The Better Choice, W2K SP3 or WXP SP1?
CyberGenX replied to CyberGenX's topic in Slack Space
I didn't say 8, I just listed 8 of the x that I could remember. Sorry, how about "a bit much" instead of "insane". I think even 8 is more than you need for PRO, maybe on HOME version you want to slow the computer down a little but not in a coporate environment. -

I am just saying that for a lot of people some of these services (and others) are not needed and run by default. Fast User Switching Secondary Login System Restore Themes Windows Audio Automatic Updates Wireless Zero Config Smart Card There's a couple more I just don't have access to an XP (fresh install) machine right now, all my machine's run 2K or 2K Server. My woman's machine has XP but I have already disabled all the default stuff. The list is ALMOST twice as long as 2K's default services (fresh install). -
Now What's The Better Choice, W2K SP3 or WXP SP1?
CyberGenX replied to CyberGenX's topic in Slack Space
Status Report: So far have not seen one stutter, snort, sniff, stall, crash, BSOD, delay, hang or anything resembling a Windows crash or failure!!! 2000 SP3 going strong. See you when SP2 for XP or SP4 for 2000 comes out. Highly recommend RAID 0, makes everything load so much faster. When XP SP1 was on this same computer I had 3 BSODs, 5 huge delay/hang issues and 1 un-invoked restart. Couldn't see the benefit of XP over 2000. I think I will get at least another 9 months to a year out of this OS before switching to XP SP2(when avail.). I didn't like having to disable all the crap after the fresh install either. The list of running services in XP over 2K is insane!!! As far as games go, all the games I play run fine out of the box on either OS. I noticed though, that XP has trouble with beta NVidia drivers compared to 2K. -

Now What's The Better Choice, W2K SP3 or WXP SP1?
CyberGenX replied to CyberGenX's topic in Slack Space
Well my drives are here. I have been running XP for the last 2 days on one of my older drives. It's ok, SP1 still hasn't fixed some issues I had almost a year ago with XP. It still hogs more memory than Windows 2K, here are some examples. -->Windows 2K SP3 Fresh install and fresh reboot It used 116MB with Outlook Express and Nero 5.5 running. -->Windows XP SP1 Fresh install and fresh reboot It used 198MB with Outlook Express and Nero 5.5 running. -->Windows 2K used only 163MB for Premiere 6.02 -->Windows XP used a 324MB CHUNK for Premiere 6.02!!! Just sitting at desktop with nothing open, XP uses about 14% more RAM. Both OSes had the same services running (about 9 total) and XP had System Restore disabled, All the effects OFF and Themes disabled. Both used the latest VIA Drivers and the same versioned Hardware drivers i.e. Nvidia Dets, SB Live Drivers, etc. So it looks like Windows 2000 SP3 WINS!!!!! Screw XP, bloated Windows ME lookin pile of sh^t. I guess I will try this again when SP2 Comes out or .NET. Thanks all. -
