Now What's The Better Choice, W2K SP3 or WXP SP1?
CyberGenX replied to CyberGenX's topic in Slack Space
What makes XP so much better? I feel it's a little bit bloated with MS's attempt to include every piece of f*ckin software they could duplicate i.e. .zip support, ICS, Firewall, Desktop sharing, video editing, etc. I am looking for stability more than performance, my hardware will carry the performance. Decisions Decisions. Still need to be convinced of XP. Round 2 Here are my specs: -
Got the video card today, it rocks, came in full retail box with 2 games and lots of cables. I am now driving both my 17" mons with it!!!
-
It will in some cases copy over above the 4Gig limit, BUT the file will not be usable, corrupt. I saw this on a couple 5Gig video files, they would copy just not function.

Someone activated a copy of XP from my stash and SP1 is giving me problems on install. I have another copy but I don't want to reinstall, is there a way to change the KEY?
-
Thank you for the link, thank you a lot! I have several copies of XP as I am an OEM builder. I just used the wrong freekin key for my woman's XP box and wanted to set it right.

Installed I.E. 6 SP1 last night, uninstalled today. After installing, Outlook Express and SOME I.E. web pages would do nothing when you clicked on hyperlinks. In Outlook any email that came in with a hyperlink to a site would not work. I had to manually copy and paste the link into the address bar. Uninstalled and problems went away. Anyone else have any wierd issues yet? :x

Can anyone tell me what the OLD MS Exchange came bundled with? Not Exchange Server, but the OLD Exchange. Or can you point me to a LAN Mail server, or Intranet mail server that can run on 98/2000. It has to support printing and attachments.
-
Exchange...where is it? Need to setup Intranet mail.

:x Stuff like this always makes me batty after a while. I have seen this on a few networks. Have you done this... 1) Try powering cycling the HUBs with the machines that have problems also powered off. After the HUBs come back online, power the machines back on. [size:14]This is best done by powering down the whole network[/color], all machines, switches, hubs. This equals like 8 minutes or less of down time if done in a efficient manner. This has helped me out 2/3 times.

Instead of reading that lonnnng trip down "what I would do" lane, understand this; You need a pagefile no matter how much ram you have. Almost all software and most OSes will need and use this space. You can choose not to use one, but at some point you will understand why you should be using one. I always wanted to some how make a RAM drive and use it for the swap file.... ;(

It always starts off as "just for word and internet" .... You wouldn't believe all the machines I have "rebuilt" because the original machine would only do "word and internet" :x

About to upgrade to the MSI KT333 Ultra 2 with RAID. Going to be using two 40 GIG drives and RAID 0. Can anyone give me to do's or shortcuts or info. on any thing I should know compat. wise.??? I know how to do it, just haven't in a year or so, wondered if it has gotten easier.

I don't think that it (.NET) had all the fixes out of the box. It's every other day that someone is reporting another security hole in even .NET framework and I.E. 6.X/7. It (.NET) is also a beta still with fully capable holes/caverns all on its own.

I have installed it on 23 machines now including my own 4. I have only had one MINOR problem with a USB device that was fixed by reinstalling the drivers for it. I am very happy with SP3. It has solved about 4 issues on 6 different computers as well.

I have had the pleasure to gain (just recently) a very high position with a company that manufactures digital VCRs. I would like to know what your thoughts are on the available brands and which you think is the best. I cannot disclose the company whom I am contracted by. And let's pretend that they all cost within $40 of each other for the box and within $10 for any monthly service fees. For my own company research which would you buy? Also free email (free email account) for the life of my company to the first POST (person) in this forum to guess which of these companies I work for. After looking at each what are your thoughts on the future of this media which will be in millions of homes by the year 2004. Here are the links to each... SP3 is working 1000% great on my machine. I have noticed faster boot time and faster window and web page loads. Also noticed a "Set Program Access and Defaults" in the Start Menu. Love it so far, waited a long time for it. RUnning more bench marks now. So far it's about 8-12% faster on my machine.

Saying JPGs are going away is like saying MS is going out of business.

Do yourself a favor and just by a router with built in switch. ICS is very slow and slows down your connection.

Try replacing that .dll with a new one. Or rename that dll and see if you get any other errors that may help.
