I have an XP box and everything worked fine for a while (always the case with new OSes). But now Windows Update will not work right. I connect and it either says I need a new version of WU or it scans the systems, locates updates and downloads them. It fails to install any of the updates everytime!! Is there a way to fix this sh%t! Even when I try to manually download and install the updates it FAILS. Help.

NO. Won't go near MS Betas after "the big DirectX" problem.

Hasn't FAT32 been killed yet, yeesh what a dated file system!!! Yes you can partition the heck out of NTFS and it IS more stable. Plus it doesn't adhere to the 4GIG file size limit that FAT32 has.

Does anyone remember the old sitcom SOAP??? -
That's what I don't figure? Why not a fresh install of XP? Rollercoaster and the sims work fine under XP.

I am adding features to a current software project and want to include hardware and software/OS registry patches and tweaks. Please send me any tweaks you have created or links to any registry patches/tweaks for 2000 and XP. Must be .reg files. Thanks in advance. P.S. Already got the AMD AGP App reg patch from another thread. I will give credit in the app to any reg files that are created by you originally. Please don't send damaging or harmful .regs 8)

I have been kicking around the idea of selling my machine (stats below) and getting a laptop instead. I wanted to know who makes the best laptops, (performance, stability and price). I looked at a dell machine that kicked *** for $2300 1.7GHz P4, 64MB GeForce 4, 8X DVD, 5400RPM 40GIG drive, 15" Ultra TFT mon, 256MB 266MHz DDR, etc. Help!!!

Thanks, by the way my dual video card, dual monitors worked with only a 2 reboot config. Mandrake supported it almost instantly. I still haven't put in the ATA 100 patch yet so it runs a little slow(er). I will try the Samba mamba again with 'drake, I'm sure I can get it on the 2nd try. Everything else was automatic, internet, sound card, nic (of course). Still wish they had more support for drivers and apps. BTW how did you know my nickname is Sparky! 8)

It's a bullsh#t product and does not increase anything but the author's bank account balance. If you really want more speed, buy a faster PC. Here is a product that's worth something (i wrote it) http://download.com.com/3000-2084-10119724.html?tag=lst-0-2

SAMBA goes on the NT machine or Linux or both? Sorry I am so lazy and don't just go to a Linux forum, but imagine how NT newbies get treated here. I don't want that headache, yet.

Just installed Mandrake 8.2, runs great! Anyone know what the h@ll I need to do to connect to my server's shares on my lan? Other than that it's nice, but Win2000 is still my No. 1 HO.

Upset! Just found out I have an ulcer, can no longer drink my favorite beer, heineken. Well I can drink, but the result is a toilet bowl full of blood. -
This is to replace my desktop. Bat life is 2.5 - 3.0 hours. This machine has to out do or out power what I have now, as it will be my main machine.

No the video is not shared. It is the best model for the price. No one else even offers GeForce 4 64MB DDR in a mobile, screw ATI. I gotta sell a lot of Boy Scout cookies to get that money though.

The dell that I saw has 40GIG, 64MB GeForce 4 GO, 512DDR, 2.0GIG P4, Ultra TFT, 8X DVD, NIC, MODEM, etc. for $2699

Fed up with Windows as a main OS. Become too busy to play games. Should I go Mandrake or Redhat? Or is there and even better flavor? Which runs the most Windows/MS Progs? Look at stats for compat. info. Will still run 2000 as a second OS in a dual boot situation. I am now also running dual display, 2 17" mons, 1 GeForce and 1 crappy PCI card for the second 17" mon.

Thanks to all for help, downloaded 3 Mandrake 8.2 CDs last night, going to use my main box, but, with a different hard disk. I will dual boot with the BIOS not the boot record so my 2000 install is untouched. Why the R.I.P. sapiens?

Does Mandrake support dual mons? I have a VIA chipset, will there be patches for Mandrake Linux as well. I have installed RedHat 6 and ran it for a week or so about 1 year and a half ago. What are the advans of Slackware? I use FrontPage 2002 alot, do you think Winex will run that? Last but not least, my server runs Windows 2000 Server, how hard is it to connect to its shares with Linux?

The mobile has got to have the Geforce 4 64MB. Has to have DDR memory, unless there is a rambus model. Gotta be under $2700.

Outlook express, IE and netmeeting major problems.

I have seen this problem when stopping or disabling certain services to gain performance. It can be a real headache. -
Notes from a mad man: Linux will never hit mainstream, simply because of MS's BOST. BOST, or Bull$h*t OS Technology, is a plan developed in 1994 to make the masses think that Windows is it and all the others are just hobbyist or mainframe OSes. Intel uses this similar technology called 4D, or Ding Ding Ding Dong (said fast). Your computer simply won't run without Windows x.x or the Intel x processor!!! and 80% of users believe this crap. As for Windows XP, well that's an OS that has the world fooled. If you like XP, M$ wins. If you hate XP, M$ still wins because you probably will use 2000 or SE instead. XP is the most politically driven product I have ever seen. If I could figure out how to open this dam CD ROM I would put in my Mandrake 8.0 disk and be gone with Windows. Sane Person: I will probably stick with 2000 until .NET comes out, XP is way to reminisent of ME, even rhymes!

The m50 is nice, as well as, the 8200. The tecra looks nice but has an extra $2000 or so of fluff it seems with no video worth mentioning!!! Yeah it's slim but I wouldn't care to lug it around if it couldn't out-power the others in all aspects (which it can't compared to the 8200 for the same price). Having a GeForce 4 is a must on this mobile!
