Intel P4 vs. AMD XP what's the deal?

Why did I start this thread again? Should have been titled "VIA vs Intel" I think the real problem is that nothing is compatible with everything. I have seen issues with Intel chips AND VIA chips. (anyone remember the the first i815 chipset that had problems with a lot of RAM out there, Intel's solution was to send your MB back with THEIR ram in it) I love Intel and AMD, i run both, neither has problems in my configurations. Every board I have had Including the Intel system has VIA chips on it. Let's not forget software, which is NEVER perfect; (remember Wintel anyone) very biased is MS. So there are a lot of factors at play other than JUST the chipset or CPU. Never seen a AMD optimized logo on windows have you? And let's stop saying that Intel boards don't require patches/drivers/BIOS updates either, because that is totally FALSE. I can list sev. examples...

Intel P4 vs. AMD XP what's the deal?

I have used VIA chips since 97 and never had a problem once, I think some people just don't know what they're doing. And as far performance goes, the KT266a and the 333(i am using now) are the fastest chipsets out there for AMD.

Intel P4 vs. AMD XP what's the deal?

Clutch: So the answer is yes you are still on a 100MHz BUS, thank you. The reason I ask is that wasn't Intel using 133FSB on the P3s? Also how did you get your 1.6 to 2.4? FSB? Because I thought Intel locked their mutltipliers, thats quite a jump! And yes I realize you are on 400MHz MEM BUS if RAMBUS. I am on the 166/333 PC2700. I think both chips are great, as i run a P3 for a server and 3 other machines are Tbirds or XPs. And as for SIS, I remember when that was the worst next to PC CHIPs motherboards, that's great for them if they got better quality now, VIA has also come a LONG way.

Intel P4 vs. AMD XP what's the deal?

Hey isn't the P4 still on a 100MHz BUS? And VIA isn't that bad, better than ALi or SIS!!!

    Small Problem!

some Netgear netcards not plugged into anything will do this same thing. Windows seems to lock up for 5 or 10 seconds and then unlocks, only to repeat the process all over. The fix for that is to disable the card in Device Manager or plug it into a hub or other net device.

Intel P4 vs. AMD XP what's the deal?

I realize that, I was saying the that Intel is touting the fact that their 2.2 beats out the 2000+. Well no sh*t Intel, there's about a 400MHz gap between the 2.

    What's better NAV or McAffee?

I just read the virus thread and thought i would separate the "2" different discussions going on there. I favor Norton Corporate Edition because it seems to have been the least trouble for me on many machines (me being an OEM and all). Although McAffee can run great if you only install the bare minimum. On both you should try to stay away from all the stupid "crash guards" and "anti fragmenters" etc. Those extra's are what really f(*k a computer up! If your computer is crashing, how is another program going to help, you need a solution not a bandaid. Just the basic scan set, email scan, and keep those defs up to date and you should be fine.

    What's better NAV or McAffee?

$84 a bit high in price for us cheap americans. You can get a bundle version of McAfee or NAV for free here in the US. I will try it though...

    Cannot Locate CD-ROM ???

Like the man said, CD COPY Protection is the problem and a lot of software/hardware will not copy newer CDs properly. You must obtain what is known as a NO-CD executable. There are a lot of sites that have these NO-CD cracks for hundreds of games. I use them to avoid having to constantly open my cd tray.

    Nvidia Det 28.32's

Let's see, if you are downloading 5 streams of video, running a virus scan and burning a CD in the background WHILE you are playing a 3D game, you are an ID10T. No ONE does this, yes, it may be possible, but this is not a real world bench mark.

    Netscape loses, blames MS!

Netscape has lost over half of its market share in the broweser world and they say MS is to blame. I think that Netscape 6.0 was to blame not MS!!!! And what ever happened to Netscape 5.0???? Let's just blame MS and all will be fine! Bad NetscapeAOL!, you did it to yourselves with a crappy browser.

Networking between 2 2k systems thru a router

You need to share the drives and create accounts for the users connected to each of the 2K boxes. Also give those accounts the appropriate permissions for those shares. www.computergenx.com/TLD.htm is a program that will make these easier for you.

What is better Win2K or WinXP?

I was triple booting SE, 2K and XP Pro at one point. WAS hot on XP for a while but then i found 2K was much less of a pain in the @ss compatibility wise.

    Profile corruption

I don't rely on MY computer at all. It is stable and runs great BUT a server in my home office (4 computers total on cable internet)actually holds all my crucial data. I simply MAP My Documents to a drive on the server and keep all my data there. A simple drag and drop to another (backup) mapped drive - backs up all my crucial stuff like profiles, favorites, Desktop shorts, registry etc.. The server backs up onto CDR weekly. This is not expensive...(unless you go ape sh*t like me) This gives me the freedom to do whatever i like with MY actual PC without screwing up my data integrity.

    Adding a ata133 controller on win2k system

Never use a disk manager unless you have too, you will end up with problems down the road. Disk managers use their own boot code and if something happens to your install and you need to simply recover data you may not be able too because of the disk manager's proprietary code.
