I currently have the Pentium D dual core 920 (2 x 2.8GHz 4MB cache, 65nm, 800MHz BUS). I am about to receive a Core 2 Duo E6300 (2 x 1.8GHz 2MB cache, 65nm, 1066MHz BUS). I wondering which is going to be faster as I can just pop either chip in my board. You'd think the 920 would be faster because of more cache and 1GHz more in speed. BUT the E6300 is on a 1066MHz BUS. Does anyone know of a comparison out there between the two? I use the chips mainly for video editing. I want the fastest chip, obviously, to be in my primary machine.

Wow! Thank you. What a surprise to see that chip clocked a full GHz or two lower stomp some of the other chips!

Isn't a little late to complain about XP? I thought this was a 2003 topic, lol. I would have to also agree that XP is THE best overall OS out there period. I have had very little issues over the years, never been infected with viri or malware, and have seen only one BSOD since 2002. And if you think Vista is going to solve your woes, LOL, that's a HUGE laugh. When has MS ever released a GUI OS that was complete and perfect out of the gate? Um, never. SP1, SP2, SP3, SP4, Security Roll ups, critial patches, sound familiar? Keep dreaming about Vista being better...

I just set up a Gigbit network, 1 server, 1 Cisco router and 10 workstations. All the workstations have Gb NICs and I am using three 8 port LinkSys Gigabit Switching hubs. Here is my problem. Although the NICs and the Switches report that everyone is connected at 1000Mbps the speed seems slower than what is was before, a 100Mbps network. What am I doing wrong? Here is what I suspect but have not yet verified: We are using CAT5 RJ45, standard 8 conductor wiring. Does Gb Networking require higher end CAT5 like CAT5E 133MHz? Or I suspect the protocol, we are using TCP/IP, And NetBIOS. The TCP/IP is for internet connection, some computers have static IPs and others are DHCP off of the Cisco router. Therefore all the computer will not see each other unless we install NetBIOS or NetBEUI. When I try to copy a file from the server to any computer I am getting less that 100Mbps. WTF!!!

Just recently got a dual-core rig, Pentium D 830. Was wondering if anyone had played around with affinity for programs that utilize MP. For instance while I use Premiere Pro 1.5, should I set my affinity to only one processor for explorer.exe and other processes that are not needing two chips? Should i set priorities higher etc etc...
-
Yeah I have to agree, A power supply can be a huge culprit. I have used Premiere since 4.0 on MANY systems and never had issues like you describe. I always recommend disabling as much as possible in the BIOS when doing a WinXP install. Not crucial stuff, but things like onboard audio, network, firewire, USB (unless you need it), unused ports, etc. That way if you enable something and suddenly start having issues, you know exactly what it is.

What sort of position could I expect with a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems? In addition what about an MIS degree as far as potential job positions?

All of us need to vent, I do not claim to be almighty god of computers but GEEEEEEZZZZZZ. 8) Diary of an onsite technician-----Here we go... * Why do people make computers harder than they have to be? * Why can some people who work million dollar equipment not find the f&(kin Start button? * Why do A LOT of "users" (not power users or experts) think that you need Windows 2000 for Office 2000 and Windows XP for Office XP? * Why is the right click such a mystery to "users"? * Why do "users" play so stupid on the phone and then when you get to the site suddenly they know more than you (but still can't fix their own machine)? * What is so hard about burning a CD? * Why do these "users" steer their friends and family into crappy systems and situations after under a year of owning their FIRST computer themselves? I have worked on computers for years now. I own a medium size onsite computer service company. I try not to tell people what I do because I always end up getting suckered into looking at their 133MHz 6 year old machine that has 16MB RAM and no free space on the 3400RPM 1.2 Gig hard disk! The first thing I hear when I tell them what I do is "Oh maybe you can help me with my computer" or "I think I have a virus, the computer won't bootdown" Whatever the h@ll "bootdown" means! You don't tell some guy whom you just met that is a Doctor that your @ss is on fire! "Could you look at my @ss, it doesn't want to boot" I'LL BOOT THAT @SS! Anyway, please respond to this with gripes, vents, sympathy, yada yada. But don't tell me I am wrong, these are my vents and opinions. Check out my new prog www.computergenx.com/TL2.htm

My wife and I need to upgrade video cards to play the upcoming BF2. We both have systems with 8X AGP, and both want a 256MB card. Our budget is about $120 -$150 per card. We currently have an ATI 9600 256MB and GeForce4Ti 4200 128MB. We just want something that is playable in BF2 at a decent resolution and effect settings. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I am currently migrating hardware between 4 boxes. On a particular computer I am working on I am having issues with the boot record. THe computer has 2 hard disks. One is just a data drive, the other is Windows, programs, etc. When I take out the data drive I am unable to boot into Windows. Obviously the drive I take out has the boot record on it. How can I either create a new boot record or copy the existing one over to the actual WindowsXP drive?

I figured as much. Either fixboot or fixmbr. Thank you for that clarification!

I have an intel setup and just ordered some fresh ddr. I ordered another dual channel matched pair. The reason was that I believe one of my sticks in my current dual channel pair is bad or going bad. My question is that once i have the bad stick replaced can i run ALL FOUR STICKS in dual channel mode? All sticks are the same speed, size, and timing. Based on the FAQ below it looks like it. I just want some additional input. FAQ The Desktop Board D865GRH supports DDR400, DDR 333 and DDR 266 SDRAM Memory. There are two DIMM channels supporting up to four 184-pin DDR SDRAM Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMMs) with gold-plated contacts. Thanks in advance.

Thanks a bunch. I'll be trying it early next week.

Are you on a dial-up connection?

LOL just noticed the post date, a little late am I...

I agree. If you can avoid the celeron, do it. It's a good chip but it's like having a 4cyl in a HUGE truck. It'll still push the truck, just not very fast.

Assuming they are all identical it should work though, correct?

I recently built a machine for my brother. Biostar nForce 2 MB, 512PC 2100 DDR, 1.4GHz Athlon T-Bird, and Radeon 9200 SE, 40Gig 7200 ATA 133 Drive. 350Watt Supply. Everything seemed to go smooth, XP Pro installed fine, all the programs and games installed and worked fine. So I just let it sit and defrag after all that loading. It locked up tighter than a frog's a$$. So I rebooted it and ran a scan disk, played around with a few memory settings, made sure there was no heat issues, yada yada. The motherboard and power supply are new. The video card, cpu, hard disk and memory were all from a working system that had it's motherboard go out on it. I let it defrag again and it went through all the way. Then after another 10 minutes of sitting there it locks up again. I turned down video acceleration, disabled USB, onboard sound, onboard nic. It would still lock up after 10 or so minutes. I checked power savers, screen savers, stand by, hibernate, etc. All were OFF in both bios and windows. Here is the kicker...I played Max Payne 2 for an hour, Ran the Serious Sam 2 demo for 2 hours, and played a couple other games. Opened 100 MS words, 30 MS excels, and a dozen other apps while playing music and web browsing. NO FREEZE. WTF! So I let the machine sit again and sure as $h*t it locks up everytime it is idle. What could be causing this computer to freeze ONLY when it is NOT being used? This is after a fresh install of WinXP pro SP1, latest nForce drivers and latest ATI Catalyst. I also tried taking out the ATI and putting in a GeForce 3 Ti, same freeze after ten minutes.

My vote HL2. It DOES have multiplayer, there are now several MODS popping up for it, 1000s of maps already, and you don't have to own a console. Some of the mods i have alpha tested are going to be pretty darn cool. Halo 1 sucked serious A$$ on the PC, the story was lame and the motion sucked. I wasn't at all impressed with Halo 2. The graphics kinda suck on xBox anyway, no FSAA etc. BTW I play my games on my PC with a nice HUGE widescreen monitor, a nice easy chair, surround sound and the CHOICE of keyboard and mouse or controller. Whoever has the superiority complex regarding consoles vs PC is an idiot. You must think all of us have 15" monitors, a crappy desk, crappy speakers and a mouse and keyboard...Nope. My games load faster, look better and are more enjoyable than consoles...I can either voice or text chat with other online players and I don't have to pay a monthly subscription IN ADDITION to my ISP's fees to play online!!! And I can still watch TV while I play, lol... PCs will always be better for most games. Consoles are ok for some games, most people don't realize the graphics card in xbox is severely outdated, what is it like a GeForce 3? When the game is ported to PC it always looks and plays much better. When they ported over a very popular FPS to xbox a year or so ago i was so NOT impressed. The graphics looked very subpar and the features were dulled and dumbed down, like a "lite" version, pffft! Nothing beats the responsiveness and accuracy of a nice laser mouse (in FPS) for aiming your crosshair while running your a$$ off in a map. Every tried to play Quake Arena with a controller? YEEEEESH!!!!
-
I would guess that it has something to do with DirectX support and the lack of on that video card. What is that like a DX6 card?
-
Ok. Here is the question which is better and why? Here is my take: I believe PC is better. My reasons: 1. Better graphics 2. More titles 3. Higher resolutions / FPS 4. More options - MODs, console commands, etc. 5. FREE online play for most games 6. Better sound, in most cases 7. In game chat 8. Better controllers 9. Upgrade ability for improved game play and performance 10. Same price overall for titles The only thing i can think of that consoles have over PC is the bigger screen (for some, lol).

Hmmm I did the SP install on 2 of my machines and it seemed to have increased speed and load times...
