    Office SP3 Not Installing!

You're installing this on a computer with Office 2000, and not Office 2002, right? I misread the intial release announcement and thought 'but sp2 just came out a few months ago.' Then I realized that it wasn't for Office XP. heh.

Is Office XP that much better than office 2000?

I agree. Office XP has some really nice features. On the consumer level, however, it probably isn't worth the price if you are already running Office 2000. At this point, I'd suggest waiting for the next version of Office. It will be released next year. Of course, if you have come across a good price on XP (student discount, etc.) and don't mind parting with the money, I'd say go for it. I definitely prefer it over Office 2000. Smart Tags are very neat. And the new Cut and Paster options save me an enormouse amount of time.

MS potentially could do anything to "DO" XP, stop

The old "People only pirate software because it costs too much" arguement doesn't hold any water. Those that make copies of their friend's Office XP CD also copy their friend's $9 games. If a program costs more than $20, people justify stealing it because it is too expensive. If it costs less than $20, they justify theft by saying the company won't miss the couple of bucks they would have gotten. Theft is theft. It doesn't matter how you try to justify it. Does Microsoft charge too much money for some of their products? Yes. The Standard versions should be much less expensive, at the very least. Does that give someone the right to steal it? No. Just use another program. That is how you'll force Microsoft to lower prices. By creating a competitive market. Buy the programs from "the other guy." If you just pirate Microsoft's software, the other companies still won't be able to compete, and software prices will remain high. You've got to give a company incentive to adjust prices. Increasing their market share, even through theft, isn't going to do it.

    IE6 SP1

Internet Explorer 6sp1 is included in Windows XP sp1. So, if you've already installed XP's service pack, there is nothing to update.
  5. The new Catalyst drivers are optimized for SP1. I'd suggest sticking with the previous drivers until SP1 is out.

    Microsoft.Net Server Family

In that case, I think you're out of luck. The preview program is only available to those in the US and Canada. If you have a MSDN subscription you can download it. The billing information is for shipping charges.

Anyone sign up for .NET server RC1 yet?

I've downloaded it from the MSDN site. I haven't had much time to play with it, but so far I'm impressed. It actually looks like a server OS. The first thing I noticed was the missing GAMES shortcut on the Start Menu. No more brainless admins playing minesweeper on the Domain Controller. I ran through the Manage My Server wizard and was surprised at how well it worked. A shaved monkey could set up this server. I want to play around with SUS since it comes as part of .NET server. I'll be able to see what kind of resources it uses up so I can determine if I want to run it at work. I don't know what to think about activation having made it into Microsoft's server OSes. Doesn't really phase me much, though. In all, .NET Server looks like a fun new toy.

    What is your favorite Ultima?

Ultima V was easily the best of the run. The story was great. It was very easy to pull an all-nighter on this game without even realizing it. They whole series started going downhill starting with VI. VII was interesting, but I couldn't be bothered to finish it. It was the first Ultima I became bored with. VIII was a joke and should be ignored. I don't have anything nice to say about IX, either.

    Need help with Old Ultimas

Ultima IV and V only use the PC speaker. So they'll have sound by default. Ultima VI was the first one to offer sound card support.
  11. Go to office.microsoft.com and run the update wizard. This will let you see what updates need to be installed. Service Pack 2 may be the solution.
  12. Have you installed the Office service packs?

    Neverwinter Nights

Neverwinter Nights has problems with just about any card that doesn't use an Nvidia chipset. So far, Bioware is blaming poor drivers. This is especially true with ATI Radeons. However, since everything else I run on my computer has benefited from the latest Catalyst drivers, I think Bioware is full of it. I'm glad I held off on buying this game. I'll wait until it drops in price and the bugs (which are plentiful) have been worked out.
  16. ATI has released new drivers and software for RADEONs. These include: Catalyst 02.1 display drivers Hydravision 3.10.1010 Capture Driver 6.13.10.6125 ATI Multimedia Center 7.7 upgrade I won't have a chance to test them until this evening. I'm curious as to what the new Catalyst drivers will do.

ATI has released several RADEON updates

Well, I'm certainly happy with the new drivers and the new version of HydraVision. They are much more responsive. And the built-in transparency features are pretty nifty, too. I haven't gotten a chance to play with the new Multimedia Center (which, thankfully, includes the new DVD player this time.)
  18. Well, the error means that at address 0XE1200ADC there was a read error from address 0X804BBE4A. It can be either a hardware or software problem. The most likely culprits are: Software Video drivers Chipset drivers AGP drivers Sound drivers (though not as likely considering the address) Hardware AGP conflict Nasty motherboard issue For software, since you've been reinstalling constantly anyway, once more probably won't hurt. Try doing a clean install then install one of the hardware drivers. Run the computer through its paces to see if it blows up. If all works well, add another driver and so on, and so on... If all goes well, do the same with the applications you want to install. For hardware, try moving your PCI cards to different slots. The first (or sometimes second, though less likely) PCI slots share an IRQ with the AGP slot. Try to avoid using them. This will also change the IRQs assigned to the cards through PnP. Considering you have had issues with various Windows versions, I'm betting the problem is hardware. Though if you are installing an incorrect driver in each you could see the same problems. Hope that helps.

Which Shipping Carrier do you Prefer?

I hate FedEX. I have yet to have a package delivered by them a.) on time and b.) without a great deal of hassle. UPS, on the other hand, has always been reliable. Airborne Express isn't a real delivery service. They say they are, but they never actually get around to delivering the packages.

    Outlook 2000 attachments

When you installed Office 2000 Service Pack 2, it added the Outlook Security patch. It prevents you from sending/receiving executables. This is done to help stop the spread of viruses. The solution is to A.) uninstall Office and reinstall without SP2 B.) Zip the attachment so it is not seen as an executable or C.) change the extension of the attachment and put instructions to change it back within the e-mail.

  25. You sure can. There are several models out there. Adaptec has a very nice one out. Just do a search for USB2 PCI card. Or, stop by a Best Buy/CompUSA type store.
