I seriously doubt that will work. Being connected to a cable modem is the same as connecting to a WAN. W2K can connect to multiple networks thorugh different NICs, but you would effectively be connecting to the same WAN twice. First, I doubt your ISP would appreciate this and would probably charge you for two connections (especially if you have to supply them with a second MAC address). On top of that, Windows would treat it as two seperate network connections. So it wouldn't split a data transfer between the two. Now, this would possibly allow you to have more consecutive downloads/uploads happening since you could have them going on two independent connections. But the bottleneck there would be your hardware.

Can't help you with the AT form factor. But if you plan on going with the Intel 933MHz I'd suggest looking into EPoX's SPA3L motherboard. It is an 815EP chipset. I've been thrilled with mine. Though I don't tend to overclock, it would be very easy to with this board.

Probably. Check to be sure you are running the newest video and sound drivers available for your system. I run MoO2 without any problems on my Win2000 system. Well, aside from it occassionally locking the mouse. But you can fix that by pressing ESC when it happens. And you shouldn't need to run apcompat to get it to work. I never have.

I currently have a ATI Radeon 64 VIVO. DVD playback is great. I haven't had the chance to try the TV-OUT/IN. So far it seems like a solid card. The FSAA with the new beta driver is pretty good. The hardware has the capability, it is just a matter of time for them to release a driver that really pushes this feature.

Something about crack. You should really stay away from that stuff.

I feel so dirty. I'm going to have to scrub my computer down now. I'll probably have nightmares from this.

Syed, if the profiles aren't being used for anything and having someone else use yours isn't a problem, you may want to use something like TweakUI to auto-login for you (I haven't used ME so I don't know if this is a feature.) I would imagine since such a feature is built into Windows 2000, it would probably exist in ME.

The KDS AV-7TF is a really nice 17" flat screen monitor. It uses Sony Trinitron technology. And it's only $199.98 at Sam's Club. You'll normally find it for around $269 or so in most retail locations.

Well, the kernel itself is cross platform. It will be used in various devices. A new MacOS could conceiveably be made from it. Heck, it will probably run your new car eventually. So, to some extent cross-platform is correct. But the OS itself isn't. I figure this will be just like "NT". Microsoft swore up and down that it didn't mean "New Technology" when it was first released. Now they say it means..."New Technology". Go figure. It was speculated that it may have meant "INTel". I think the guys in marketing are just screwing with everyone.

I believe it is even noted in the manual to leave it as "No".

XP may also refer to XML Protocol.

You should leave your BIOS set to Plug and Play OS = No.

Why is Windows 2000 pro the best OS choice for Internet user
OLEerror replied to pr-man's topic in Slack Space
If you are not having any problems, then there isn't much reason to switch. Unless there is some specific feature(s) in Windows 2000 you want to take advantage of. You might as well wait for Whistler to be released if you are just upgrading for the sake of upgrading. -
Diskeeper or Norton Utilities will both defragment your swap file.

Quote: He thinks that something like Linux is flawless? there are probably more holes in it, they just haven't been found. Actually, they have been found. And are widely known. Linux has holes in it big enough to drive a truck through. And they can't really be patched without crippling the OS. Linux has all of the failings of UNIX. It just isn't publicized as much because the market share is so small. Now, if Microsoft ever brought out MS Linux, you'd see the bugs receive a lot of press time.

Your swap file is probably fragmented. If you don't have a third-party defragmenter that will defragment the swapfile (Windows 2000 defragmenter won't) then set your swapfile down extremely small. Defragment your hard drive, then reset the swapfile.

Well, in this case the information being sent has nothing to do with "features", "user friendliness", or "usability". Microsoft is basically polling you computer for what type of hardware you have and what apps you use. It's basically answering a survey everytime you login. Irregardless, it explains the excessive hard drive activity you are experiencing.

Actually, Palos is somewhat correct. MSN Explorer does gather information about your system and sends it to Microsoft. It is supposedly anonymous. Of course, you are also supposed to be able to turn it off in the settings. I tried this while I was checking it out. ZoneAlarm caught it trying to send out the next time I logged in. Go figure.

Supposedly sometime in February.

No no no. Don't do that. Sleeping on your hub or router is a bad idea. It causes back problems, and it's not particularly good for the device.
-
From what I understand both SP7 for NT4 and SP2 for 2000 will be released in February.

Depending on how much Win2k experience you have, I'd suggest going to at least a couple of the classes. Especially once you get into Active Directories and such. And the first class of the series acted as a good refresher for me.

I just recently installed ZoneAlarm even though I have a router. This isn't to protect my computer from outside. It is to keep unwanted programs from sending information out. So far I've been pleased with it. And haven't seen any performance degradation on either computer it is installed on.

To check the Event Log, go into Administrative Tools (under Programs in the Start menu) and select Event Log. If Administrative Tools does not show up, Go to Settings under the Start Menu. Then select Taskbar & Start Menu. Choose the Advanced tab and click on Display Administrative Tools. And drink less coffee. You're a bit on edge.

You may be receiving a system error. By default Win2K automatically reboots when this occurs. Check your Event Log. That should give you a clue to what is causing it.
