The LinkSys Cable/DSL router is very good, especially for the price. But don't be fooled by that free 24 hour tech support sticker on the front. Their tech support is practically nonexistent. And you'll never hear back from them. Of course, you probably shouldn't need to use it anyway.

One of the network cards may have been broadcasting. This is usually corrected when the computer is shutdown. Or it can correct itself over time.

There isn't an option in ICS to restrict bandwidth. I believe there are some third party programs that will allow this. Also, if you connect through a router/switch, it will equally divide the bandwidth between all of the computers connected.

You may want to try running a Repair on Internet Explorer. It should repair any broken ***ociations. Or, you can recreate the ***ociations manually.
-
You may come off better just shipping it to your new address.

Is it only the laptop that is having problems? Or is the ME machine also unable to connect? If it is just the laptop, that is most likely where your problem is. If you are using Internet Explorer, try setting the connectio properties again. If that doesn't work, try running a repair on it.

Boot slowdown after installing Active Directory
OLEerror replied to Arkos Reed's topic in Networking
Disable the NIC connected to DSL and see what happens. If the boot time improves, AD is probably conflicting with your ISP. Quite a few ISPs won't provide support for Windows 2000 Server because of this type of problem. -
You can only disable the GUEST account. You can, however, rename the ADMINISTRATOR account.

We have enough trouble counting ballots. Stop trying to make things more confusing.

Unlike downloading IE 5.5 with this same command, this will only download IE 5.5 SP 1 for your current operating system. So far, I haven't been able to find a way to combine different OS downloads into one product.

You can make the boot disks from the Windows 2000 CD. Just run Makebt32.exe from the BootDisk directory. If your computer will boot from CD, you don't need the boot disks.

You can update the driver from Display Properties. Click the Advance Button under Settings. Then select the Monitor Tab. Then click Properties. I'm surprised that it isn't displaying your monitor as Plug & Play monitor in Device Manager.

Apparently Microsoft decided to fix this problem. SysPrep v1.1 supports multiple mass storage controllers. I'll have to try this out tomorrow to see how well it works.
-
First, make sure you're using Ghost 6.5. Version 6.03 works, but is kind of flakey. After building the system you want to clone, run Sysprep -pnp (it is found in the Deploy.cab on the Windows CD.) This will strip out all of the SIDs and force Windows 2000 to look for PNP devices on the systems you ghost to. One problem with ghosting Windows 2000. All of the computers you ghost to must have the same hard drive controllers. This means if you clone the image of an OptiPlex GXi you can't ghost it to a GX1. So you'll need to make a seperate ghost for each model. NTFS works fine. I haven't found any problems with ghosting it.

Yeah, but then they were purchased. So the nasty little buggers are still around.

Windows 2000 supports ACPI differently than 98. Check to see if there is a BIOS update available for your system.

Windows 2000 is an Intel OS. It was built around the Intel processor. Support for AMD was an afterthought. And even then, it is a bit sketchy. Microsoft and AMD are currently working to improve support. But I'm not sure how far they'll get.
-
Yep, they are. But they are getting harder to find. Most internal modems are now Winmodems. I tend to stick with USRobotics. KFlex modems can be extremely flakey and some ISPs don't support them. The USRobotics External Voice modem supposedly works with Windows 2000 now. But only using serial. The USB support isn't there yet. It's a bit pricey at $140 though.

Have you tried defragmenting your hard drive? After a number of installs it can get pretty messy. -
Time to play Devil's Advocate - Do we really need RAID in de
OLEerror replied to BladeRunner's topic in Hardware
Providing RAID controllers in desktop computers is a logical step. 98% will not use this technology, today. However, what home-user really needs a 1GHz processor? or 512 meg of RAM? or dual processors? Very few. Probably not even enough to be considered a market. But that is today. Look at the expansive growth of computers, and the dependency the public has formed for them. Desktop computers started off as no more than a means of data entry and word processing. And no one would ever consider having one in a small business or (God forbid) actually have one in their home. Now, it is almost impossible to find a business without at least one (and most often several) computers chugging away endlessly. 50% of the American public is online. Home networks have become common. With this type of growth in usage, and the number of common devices that are being re-designed to tie into a personal computer, the need for desktop systems that are hardly distinguishable from servers is on the horizon. It is the natural evolution of the beast. Right now high speed, fault-tolerant storage is something for high-end computing. Tomorrow, your Grandmother will be complaining that she needs another hot-swapable drive to slap into her RAID 5 because she has filled her recipe volume up again. And we wouldn't want Grandma to be upset, would we? -
Red Alert doesn't work under W2K. I contacted Westwood concerning this and they know about the problem but have no plans of supporting it. Evidently, DirectX 7 in Windows 2000 is not completely compatible with versions used in 95/98. This is why some DirectX games refuse to behave.

I believe this thread was moved here from another forum. This forum has only recently been added.

Basically, don't use network browsing with Windows 2000. It uses about 38% of the available bandwidth. Instead, access your other computers using a UNC (ie. \\workstation1\c$\share). It will get rid of the slowdown problem, and leave your bandwidth open.
