xp automatically make pagefile on 2nd HD
OLEerror replied to rgodart's topic in Customization & Tweaking
If there is not enough room on the system drive for Windows XP to create the default maximum pagefile size it will place it on a secondary drive or partition. This happens under Windows 2000 as well. I haven't seen it under other versions, but it may occur there as well. How much room do you have free on your system drive? -
Or, use the Driver Rollback feature to return to the original drivers.

Atreyu, does your ASUS motherboard use a VIA chipset? If so, you've listed two major culprits of bluescreens in XP: VIA chipsets and Nvidia video cards. So far, these two companies have been unable to produce consistently stable drivers for many of their products unde Windows XP. Surprisingly, the problems Windows 2000 was plagued with due to the Sound Blaster Live! seem to have been fixed in XP. Though it may also have contributed to your problems.

So far I haven't had any problems that are actually due to Windows XP. I'm a bit ticked at the fact that Philips still hasn't released XP drivers for my Seismic Edge sound card. But, beyond that, everything is great. And, I've learned never to buy anything made by Philips ever again.

Unless you've formatted your hard drive as NTFS. The system disk created using the steps Seldzar explained is a Windows ME startup disk. Thus, it can't read NTFS.

It shouldn't cause any problems. I'm not even sure that Adobe Acrobat 3.1 even works correctly with Windows XP.

Replace Mediaplayer 6 with 7 for online streaming?
OLEerror replied to ok_interested's topic in Software
WMP 6.4 is the default player for streaming media because it uses the same codecs as the newer players, it is a much smaller program, and the newer players don't offer you any advantages when dealing with streaming media. -
The real question is: why did you give your Windows XP CD to your friend?

I use Office 2000 on Windows XP without any problems. Have you installed SR-1? SP2?

If the WinXP partition is formatted as FAT32, this won't be a problem. Just copy the inbox file (Inbox.dbx I believe) to the WinME partition. If it is formatted NTFS, reinstalling WinXP as an upgrade over the current XP install should work, but I'd suggest performing a clean install of it after you've recovered your info.

I think Links works in XP. I've never messed with Tiger Woods '99, so I can't help ya with that one.

Under the Power Options, go to APM and turn it on. You may want to see if there is a more recent BIOS version for the motherboard, as well.
-
If you look at the bottom on the search dialog panel, you should see a selection to turn on file-indexing. This will speed up file searches quite a bit.

If you can't boot normally or into Safe mode, you can boot to Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Log on using an account with administrative rights. Run %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe. Unfortunately, you cannot run System Restore from the Recovery Console.

If you are having a problem with the mouse halting, here's another possible fix. If it is a USB mouse, see it your BIOS supports it. Some BIOS allow for a USB mouse/keyboard to be controlled by the BIOS or the OS. Set it to be controlled by the BIOS.

Why is the activity light on my cable modem blinking?
OLEerror replied to kgeissler's topic in Networking
kgeissler, have your firewall block all Internet traffic and see if the modem continues to blink. If so, it may be your ISP polling the modem. It's not uncommon for cable ISPs to do this, even though they should only do it for short periods of time to test their system. Unfortunately, many allow it to happen constantly. -

Under Network Properties, click the Advanced button. Select the WINS tab and change your NetBIOS settings to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP". There will still be a delay, but it should be noticably shorter.

I hope one of you has an idea of what's going wrong. I'm building a Pentium 4 as a present for someone. Here's a quick rundown of the parts: ABIT TH7II Pentium 4 (478) motherboard Inwin S508-ATX case w/300 watt power supply Western Digital 40GB ATA-100 7200rpm drive SONY 16x DVD-ROM SONY 3 1/2" disk drive ATI RADEON 7500 AGP video card. OK, so here's the problem. When I boot up, it is unable to detect the hard drive. I've plugged the hard drive into another computer and it detected it without a problem. I even formatted it to make sure it wasn't bad. I've removed everything except the video card a and hard drive just to narrow things down a bit, but still no luck. This is the second ABIT board I've had this problem with. The funny thing is, it can detect the DVD drive, so the IDE controllers appear to be working fine. I've tried the IDE cable that came with the drive, the one that came with the motherboard, and the one from another computer with no better luck. Any ideas?

Well, hot diggity! It works! Just pulled the jumper off to set it to single (it had been Master) and it booted up all nice like. Yippee!!

Just make sure none of it actually falls into the monitor through the air vents and it should be fine. They'll get sick of it sticking to their screen due to the static electricity after a couple of days and get rid of it themselves, probably. You may want to send out an e-mail discouraging this practice just to cover your butt, though.

As long as you don't change any components the code you've received over the phone should always work.

Or, if you're tired of typing, right-click on My Computer and select Manage. You can also access Administrative Tools through the Control Panel or have them show on your Start MEnu by selecting them in the Properties. I tend to use a combination of all of them depending on what I'm doing at the time.
