OK Compressed air will not hurt anything inside the monitor, as long as the monitor is turned of or unplugged. Using a vaccum may be a good idea to get gunk of the sides and top, so i would try that as well. I would recommend not to take of the case unless you know alot about electronics. A capacitor to an engineer could be a hand rest to the lay person, and dont misjudge this warning that they states "not to open the case", it has a very good chane of killing you if you get shocked, depending on how much charge the caps are holding. I have used compressed air beofre as a means of cleaning out a dirty monitor, but i used a vacumm as well.

I was asking this very question about 2 months ago. I decided on a AMD 1.2GHz and an ASUS A7M-266 (has the AMD 760 chipset in the northbridge) only supports ddr...it runs like the wind man. Its unbelievable. I priced out an intel system also with a P4 1.5GHz at the heart, and that system was almost $700 more!!!! The funky thing is....my computer hammers on the intel one...in benchmarks and 3dmark2001. At work...we just got same setup, but a 1.4GHz cpu...and its amazing fast (granted there is an asus geforce 3 in it) but wow man. Cannot go wrong with amd. And so what if you have to install 1 or 2 patches. Its not like you have 400 computers you gotta take care of. Just download, install, then take 10 mins time and document this, then burn to cd-rw. DONE!

I'd use good ol' DOS for the easiest fix www.bootdisk.com

I took the A+ cert course 2 years ago. It was fairly useless, got 2 good books outta the deal. The best part is definatly the DOS reveiw. It pretty well goes over every command and switch that is possible. Now I am in Computer Engineering Technology program, and I think that will take me alot farther. But as said before, it doesnt really compare to anything else. Its kida good to have for the 'icing' aspect

Im pretty sure its f2 also. -
I need command line that will show all of my .class files in seperate sub dirs. IE: dir /s *.class Basiclly, this is what i need, but I need to pass them as a parameter to zip. In unix I would do something like: find -type f -name "*.class" | xargs zip blah.zip But I don't know how to do that in windows 2000.

It could be any number of things. Is there another ide device on the same channel as the hard drive, if so, then the speed of the slowest drive on each channel will define the speed of the hard drive. if thats not the case, do you have service pack 2, which has support for ata100? If so, have u turned the option on in the device manager under the advanced tab of the primary and secondaryu ide controllers??? Are you using 80 wire/40 pin cables? If not this will degrade down to ata33. The extra 40 wires are basiclly ground wire to eliminate cross talk. If all these points are correct, i would check your mobo manufacturer for ide drivers. ps: Have you done anybenchmarks with sandra??? Are you just 'feeling' the speed isnt up to snuff, or do you know?? Sorry if i cant be of any help, just droppin a few points across.

Very LONG post about my very FRUSTRATING problem (Win2K &
CrazyKillerMan replied to Ythan's topic in Hardware
Heh...raid = pain in the ***. I had a sorta similar problem with an IWILL Side RAID 100 and 2 maxtor 30 gig, 7200rpm ata100 drives. The problem was that fdisk and the 2k install could see the drives no problem, but, after initial instalation, when the computer reboots, its sticks at the starting windows screen. Believe you me, there was NO way to get ide raid working. The problem I had, was as you mention, sharing or irq's. It was sharing the irq with nic(also linksys), soundcard(also sblive) and some other crap like the serial stuff or something, cant member. So...I ditched the iwill card and got the promise fastrak 100. BAM...no longer does the raid card share irq's, worked the first time on install and I have been running now for about a month with no data corruption. So its not the fast trak 100. Why do you have 2? Why not use one fast trak with all four drives attached (this config can still be striped), I cant see this config to be of any use, using the 2 raid cards, as you will not see any speed increase. I hammer out 46000 in sandra with my setup, and that is plenty fast. -
Best cpu cooler for price/efficiency/noise ratio. Throw the opinions.....gots an amd 1.2 GHz running ave about 45 degrees now.....need better cooling...

Installed the jmc without a hitch. My ave temp prior, using the stock HSF that amd supplies was 45 deg C. Now, with the JMC in place it has dropped to 39 deg C. With the A7M266 hack in place, the temp sometimes when idel goes below 30 deg C!!!

What kinda raid card is it??? I had the IWILL raid card and it totally refused to work in my system, got a Promise fast trak 100 and it worked the first time, all powerful, she moves and shakes. What im getting at is that no matter the chipset some manufacturers make em different, as the iwill didnt like my system and the promise whipped up asap.

Heh I feel your grief buddy I, for some reason, never can get away with installing beta appz, some will work but most wont. Actually with 2k this has been cut down. But with my exp with the *shudder* 9x kernel, my friends could always isntall beta crap and be fine, where as I would be suckin' on sloo water.

dos skills are easy to reclaim an easy setup for a batch would be like: %sysdrivewherecacheis% ie: C: cd [folder where cache is] ie: cd Progra~1 ("Program Files" but some dos based os's cant read more than 8 chars, unlike 2k) del *.* (or you can refine by typing something like del *.gif or *.html) and then if you wanna do more folders just add something like this: cd.. (knocks the tree back one, from C:\Progra~1\ to C:\ ) cd Temp del *.* and just name it something.bat (make sure file extension is bat and not txt though ) you could get way more intense with some scripting but i prefer to keep my scipting to perl and php but i think youd benifit from geting xteq, its amazing, i dont leave home without it.

I just screwed something up...how to fix it?
CrazyKillerMan replied to Brian Frank's topic in Hardware
np I am kinda new to raid myself, but i have a promise fast trak 100. Running it in stripe ive gone for about a month without anything going wrong, but if it does all i need to do is re-install everything as i created a bat file to back everything up every day at 4am. I back it up to another HD i have. Rule of thumb appz to array data to fixed/mirror At promises site you can dl the manual for the fastrak 100 in pdf format. I would kinda suggest doing this as it is WAY WAY better than my previous raid card (IWILL) that i could never get to work and it discusses pretty well everything you need to know about raid 0,1,and 5 as well as SPAN. (Store got thier card back tied to a brick, via thier front window ) -
Is there an amd approved heatsink/fan on there? If not id suggest getting one. BUT The point is that it shouldnt lock when it hits 50 deg C My 1.2 Ghz runs at an average of 46 degrees and it sometimes climbs to above 50 without any hitch. Maybe the chip is funked. Its not OC'd right? If it is...turn it back to stock settings, im assuming your just running its at 1.4 GHz. It could be a combination of a bunch of things, ambient temps, fan on heatsink has crapped out, heatsink is not 'flat' on the bottom/thermal grease is not there. I suggest a jmc Arctic freeze plus HSF, it has a strip of copper for good heat conductivity and a pretty decent fan on it. Id check with amd about this first, see if it is normal for this chipset to be locking at that moderate temp.

or go with an IDE raid option. One more hard drive. WAY increased bandwidth. I am running dual maxtor 7200 ata100 drives and they perform wonderfully! Just dont get an IWILL raid card...i had a large amount of problems with mine, and finally got a promise fastrak 100 for $30 more, it was definatly worth it. edit: Nevermind you have onboard raid already

I just screwed something up...how to fix it?
CrazyKillerMan replied to Brian Frank's topic in Hardware
man u may have lost all your data. If i understand right you got rid of the raid array??? or you wanna use the old drive with the 17.2 gig in a stripe? Everything is a little unclear. Like sapiens said, you can rebuild the array, but if your using an older hard drive with the 17.2 gig one, i wouldnt recommend it. The size of the partition will go down with stripe...to a max of 2 x the smallest drive. Also the speed will depend almost completly on the weakest link (no plug). -
Hey guys, sorry about the probable re-ask but i was unable to find any concrete answers as far as this topic goes. I am at work and I need to dual boot win2k and winNt. There is a reason for this. I need to use an optibase mpeg-1 encoder, and only drivers for NT and 95 are available. The reason I want to go with NT is because the card works alot better in the NT environment. I kinda got this slammed on me yesterday, and although ive gone to the optibase website for drivers (none) and info (it says it works with nt 5 beta, which is essentially 2k) it still does not work in a 2k environment. The problem im having is that 2k doesnt even see the install of the card, and the drivers cause hard lockups. So in short im wondering how to dual boot nt and 2k on an existing 2k box. 1 hard drive (8 gigs), 128 megs of ram and a p3 500 proc. is it possible to install to the same hd just different partitions? Should i use partition magic for this as there is about 6 gigs free on the drive at the moment? and anything else i should probably *know*? Thanx a bunch in advance
