Sharing my ADSL line with other computers with one nic?
CrazyKillerMan replied to Silent-IQ's topic in Networking
I think the only way to do it...as far as ive seen is by having 2 NICs....as rgodart said that it would work with software and a hub, but I assume it would run like this: ADSL---->CPU(nic#1)---->software--->CPU(nic#2)--->Hub-->other cpu I have it set up with a LOAF router set up...2 computers on the network with a hub and 4 nics -

Well...RAID 0 is primarily aimed at improving performance, not reliability. RAID 1 Mirrors and Duplex's...this effectivly writes the data to both hard drives. If the data cannot be read from or written to one drive, the other is used. RAID lvl 10 is the combo of RAID 0 and RAID 1. Basiclly RAID 10 is for performance AND reliability. Personally i would go with RAID 0 because Hard drives today are pretty well made. Going with RAID 0 will increase both read and write speed. Two sets of RAID 0 would be sweet!!! One for OS and applications, and another for storage/games ... just think of the transfer speed between the two!!!

When I took the plunge to from 98SE to Win2k, I made sure I had a conlusive list of all the drivers that I would need (printer, video card,etc...) then I came here and checked all my Applications, games, and hardware all here at NTcompatible. Then i got everything installed, everything worked very well, instalation was easy and setup was also easy. I'd recommend getting the newest updates though...as these will improve compatibilty and performance. After getting everything set up, there was a TON of stuff to tweak...so I joined the forum. Good luck

I am kinda confused here of what exactly you want. Quote: Originally, I was using the formula: =(Op*2+0.95), but this gives me .45 for the second example above, instead of .95. When you use the formula =x.95 , this will only work for whole numbers, excel will give you the incorret value by rounding up or down so the number is whole. $14.45 is the correct answer...so this is where it gets confusing for me. You could set up a sort of "menu" system in excel by throwing the value of x in some feild....then saying FP=x.b1 ---- or something. This way you could change the value you want to add. I thnk CUViper hit it on the nose as far as i understand.

hmmm..... The only way i have been able to share files with win2k to 98se boxes is adding each account user name. The best way to do this would prolly be to amke an account called "Share" then set it up for max logins. Then tell your buddies at the lan to login their 98 boxes as "Share" then they will be able to see it. P.S. isnt sharing banned at LAN parties? esp with bandwidth in mind???

I was really looking into getting an IDE RAID setup in my computer. Basiclly what i want to do is upgrade cpu and mobo and instead of just throwing a 7200 20 gig hd in...i could get another one and set em up in RAID. Is this a good option to go for? I have a friend that has raid 0 set up and he claims everything is faster. I have absolute none exp in raid configs....i just know what they do...not how to set em up. OK... basiclly what im asking is: Has anybody set up an IDE raid before...and if so was it worth it and what kinda hardware did you use?

Thats funny because it is so ignorant!!! -
so how exactly do u install an OS to a raid array? My understnaing is that (your mobo) has the auto detect when there are 2 of the same HD's installed and sets them up as one drive. Then when installing....can you just simply install to the "raid" drive...say c: or something???

I agree with clutch Alot of my friends parents (of the docotr/architect kind) go out and buy Win2k Pro....but the funny thing is....they dont do anything with it...all they want, is their computer to be bad *** fast at start up so they can get their email from Uncle Ron in the bahamas. I can understand this: "well....i only look at email and surf...so ill spend money on the product that best suits my needs" Because I am like that, alot of smart people are like that. YOu know...if i wanted to run a business at home and play games....id have win2k. If i was a (hate to use it again) soccer mom and didnt know how to open IE without my 6 yr old son reminding me of the button to press...i wouldnt want to spend and extra $50+ dollars on something i didnt need. Its just business. Plain and simple...different products for different people. Btw...Linux does come installed on some custom computer systems . -
If the jumpers were not setup correctly, the hard drive would not detect at start-up. May want to change IDE cables (i assume its IDE b/c u didnt mention scsi) but i dont think it would give you that specific error everytime. I would suggest as Brain Frank did....install any other OS to the hard drive and check it from there. If it does not install...i would prolly take it back. Also...your other friend that cant install win2k, does he have same setup as you? And your other friend that can, does he have the same setup? I dont think this is a config problem, because the drive is detected. Try it out for errors.

I think this is a pretty touchy subject, with no right or wrong answer. Some may say to integrate more options intoa home OS would be more expensive, which is true. Some ppl will never, ever think of taking advantage of new utils and appz in the "integrated" home OS. Which is also true. But... There is also the side that may say that its up to M$ to make a cheap version for home with all the services as the work os's. This can be true...but i think that to make money, to distribute your product evenly and to best suit the needs and wants for each seperate os, that the best way to do this is seperate them, and charge more money for the more integrated program. A quick thought... Some people buy trucks, some 4x4s,ome not, some diesel, some not. Basiclly...there is a need and a want for everything. You pay for what you get. -
what happens if you nix Netbeui NWLINK Netbois NWLINK IPX/SPX I dont have alot of exp with networking yet, but all you need for what u want is tcp/ip...i think.

Dual 1.5GHz would be sweet....but unfortunatly...still unavailable. At least thats what my sources indicate...plz...tell me if im wrong...cause id like a dual system, then all i need to do is look into the lottery... The most part of the problem is though for SMP is that a end-user at home doesnt really need that much power for the processing they do. Like clutch said a soccer mom wont pay +$600-$1000 more for a dual processor when all she is doing is rippin pics and emailing em off. But, on the other hand, it would be nice to just have that option open. just my thoughts, kinda on auto-pilot...studying for digital final. 8) -
sorry ppl...i moved this icon outta my toolbar by accident onto the desktop and i wanted to know how to get it back there....without leaving the program on the desktop. Runnin win2k. Searched for some pages...but with no luck.
