Oops - sorry folks...IE had a hiccup here at work, and psoted twice, and also I forgot to add a title. Many apologies. -------------- Hey all. I am "new" to linux. New meaning that I finally dumped Windows XP off of my workstation at home. I am now using Gentoo at home, and I am having a blast. I have ran distro's (cut teeth on Slackware at school) and have had Red Hat 9.0 running in VMWare at home from time to time. I have only used Linux primarily in a work environment (where below doesnt really fit in - hence this post). So - I do understand a large part of how Linux works, and how to do most things...my question is this: I have been bumming around the forums at gentoo and here for some time trying to find answers...but I have come up empty handed. Now that I know a good portion of linux functionality (enough to survive in a Linux environment) I have started customizing my desktop. I run Xorg/Kde3.3 and have been looking at some screenshots over at kde-look.org and the like. Questions: 1) How can I get the virtual desktop windows in the Task Panel to actually draw the window? You know? Aside from a maximized Thunderbird being a white box? 2) Is there a decent place to go for desktop customization? Besides kde-look??? Some of the desktops I have seen have been quite spectacular... I would like to 'noodle' with this as well as some other things on KDE and Gnome. ..first I gotta get ypbind to work with my FC2 server... --------------

Have you ran the xorg configure utility??? Xorg -configure The above is for 'automatic' To semi-manually (or semi-automatically) enter stuff in, like vertical and horizontal refresh try: xorgconfigure Try this out, and see if it makes any difference.

From Gentoo handbook: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=10 This is a really nice intro to grub. If you want to edit your grub file, make sure to check out /etc/fstab and make sure that when your boot partition is loaded that it does not have "noauto" as an option or you will not be able to view that partition.

iamroot: Kick ass man!!! Thanks a bundle. Quick Question: How do you get the ability to invite a person to GMail??? Anything wild or crazy involved?
-
iamroot: I would love a gmail account. I have my own mail server setup but now I am taking it down (cause I need the machine to do something else). A GMail account would kick arse!!! crazykillerman@hotmail.com

Hey fellas I am in need of some minor assitance here. On my network at home I have four computers. I have FC2 running as our server (mail, http, ftp, etc). The other machine is a smoothwall firewall/router and the other two are windows XP workstations. I have setup samba as a PDC and its working fine. In a script run at startup, I smbmount the shares we have on our windows machines to /SMB_DFS as a DFS of sorts. This works great. It works perfectly. I finally got around to configuring proFTPD the way I want ... and I start the users in ~/FTP_Tree. I mount /SMB_DFS to ~/FTP_Tree/FTP (so they can see all shares and not see all the crap in ~/) I can see the FTP folder when I log on - and when I enter that folder, I can see all the shares located in /SMB_DFS. The problem I run into is when I look in /SMB_DFS/WS1share (really it is ~/FTP_Tree/FTP/WS1share) there are not any files. How do I get these files to be visible. I dont thing this is a permission issue. When I log in as root and get and 'ls /home/user/FTP_Tree/FTP/WS1share' I get the same thing as when I log onto the FTP. Any ideas??? PS: To mount the /SMB_DFS to the ~/FTP_Tree/FTP dir I use: "mount --bind /SMB_DFS ~/FTP_Tree/FTP" The DFS is mounted using smbmount and as stated, works fine.

Nails it!!! Thats exactly what it was. RTFM indeed lol Thanks for that...it makes sense now that it would be a mounting issue, as using any connection (other than FTP) yielded the same results I got when using ftp...therefore it was a initial problem of setup, not of execution. Thanks, Bud! EDIT If you need a hand with what you are setting up, or if you get stuck, just let me know crazykillerman@hot blah mail. /EDIT [Edited by crazykillerman on 2004-08-25 15:52:10]

Well...the thing is that when I mount it, and view it using a root ssh logon, I cannot see the contents of those folders. The ls -ld only gives me: [root@gimpy FTP]# ls -ld drwxrwxrwx 8 root root 4096 Aug 24 10:02 . While... [root@gimpy FTP]# ls -al total 32 drwxrwxrwx 8 root root 4096 Aug 24 10:02 . drwxr-xr-x 4 userx root 4096 Aug 24 16:48 .. drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 21 20:18 FM_FTP drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 21 20:18 FM_MISC drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 21 20:18 FM_STORAGE drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 13 10:51 GB_FTP drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 13 10:51 GB_MISC drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 13 20:50 GB_MP3 As you can see...the folders have read perms. But...alas, no files. Thanks for the assitance.

Im definatly on board, and I am onboard with changing video cards. Going from nvidia to ati is such a difference. You'll slap yourself for not choosing ATi initially as yer WS vid card (as clutch said matrox was cool...but how long has it been since a useful product has been released by theM?) I have seen many 19" Sony CRT's that are excellent. My current monitor has trinitron tubes and its 19". I run at 1600x1200@75Hz (dual monitor) and text quality is perfect.

I know a little about IMAP and its workings (I run an IMAP server @ home). I am just curious to see if anyone out there has a mail client program like OE (but not cause it dont) that sorts IMAP mail accounts? It has to be shareware/freeware and Outlook isnt an option as I run OO @ work.
-
Well rules based sorting does not work in OE or eudora. Will have to give this "the bat" thing a try
-
from re-reading my first post...it wasnt really clear what I want....shouldnt have used the word "accounts" "I need an email client that is able to use mail rules on IMAP accounts" Much better
-
keyword missed was "sort" ie: Mail rules ie: Mail from x goes to folder y IMAP is kept on server....so....the mail server and client would have to converse when the user starts it, then move email around on the mail servers folder list know what i mean?

Well - here is one for all you office users out there. My question is regarding office 97's excel program. A question was asked at work today if one can link to a seperate spreadsheet and edit it within a spreadsheet that has a huge collective of forms, but at the same time the user may access the file that it links to to see this large spreadsheet but not be able to edit it. ie: A ---> B ;can edit both A and B through A's forms B ---> A ;can edit only B, and only has read access to A and the forms on B are populated from A Is there an elegant solution to making this work, or is this unfeasable? The first "problem" is no problem by making a hyperlink to that file. But, B is where I scratch my head. Keeping in mind that the file needs to be updated in B no matter which way you look at it (2 seperate files wont do unless there is a way of populating file B1 with File B2's info).

Quote: Use Access?? or make an MySQL database and use Access or PHP as the interface? (Access - using ODBC) if that was an option Cant be done. The document is part of a very large book, and there is way to much data to change. Fri afternoon he told me he didnt care anymore - so the whole question is moot ;( . I am working on an interesting database project now though, and I may drop a line back. It really would be nice if the companies I work for would be consistant. Last job I was at was all about MySQL and now this one is Access. O well, good to have exp in both anyways.

Cool ... thanks for the reply. The two will be identical as long as one updates the other. So - I think that this will work definatly. **Dusts of VB books** Thanks again

RAID 0 on a Promise Fast Trak 100 and on A7V333 MBLite promise controller work fine before and after SP1 on Windows XP. -
