Win2k SP2 is evil...EEEEEEVIL!

did you do a system backup or at least enabled the service pack to allow later uninstallation? if not, you could try reapplying it or running system file checker. i don't think there is a lot you could do w/o backup.

Office xp and bloacking access in outlook

don't blame MS, blame all the stupid crybabies who double-click .vbs **** before even thinking about it. They cried about the OS not catering to their stupidity and holding their hand, so they got what they asked for. It may not be the most flexible solution, but it works. I'm not really sure on fixing this. http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup/getexe.htm#ol2002 This site seems to have a few workarounds but i have never tested them so i can't say if they work or not.

2 Users at the same time and System Requirements

it all depends on the programs and the number of them opened. Yes, XP Pro has fast user switch so more than one users can be logged on locally.

I think WindowsXP looks lame

Quote: Originally posted by OLEerror: SimiaN, I think you're missing the point of what XP offers. Forget about the new interface and added features. It creates a common platform for home and business users. This hasn't really been around since DOS. Do you realize how many support headaches this will cure? As you do this for a living I'm sure you can appreciate that. Personally, I plan on putting my parents and in-laws on XP soon after it is released. They will have the stability on an NT OS, plus the compatibility of 9x. It will also allow me to work on their computers remotely when they have problems. For the business user, there might not be a large number of pluses over 2000. But to the administrators there is. Concurrent logins by itself makes this upgrade worth it. I'm just saying, look beyond the glitz and check out the real advantages. XP really is something to look forward to. First of all, i agree on the benefits of a single platform. Secondly, i've read that if a XP box is a part of a domain, then you can't use user switching. Remote control is also good but many businesses already have the software that allows them to do it. Besides, if a system is totally hosed, Remote Assistance is no use.

I think WindowsXP looks lame

some of you are praisehailing it more than it deserves, after all it's just another OS. it's a new tool, not a new child or something.

I think WindowsXP looks lame

some ppl do, some ppl don't, some don't care. i do some customization but it usually doesn't go beyond changing the background or a little color correction here and there. Maybe i'm just lazy. By borrowed, i meant licensed. As for ideas, you can't copyright an idea. it's just that MS shoulda done it sooner. Yes, i'm happy with a system that doesn't need rebooting every 30 hours. Win2k doesn't crash too often either. 'fixes itself' is a stretch though. No thanks, i used xp for a while myself so i don't need any screenies.

I think WindowsXP looks lame

Quote: Originally posted by EddiE314: what? are you on crack? obviously you haven't used winxp either, to put down xp is to put down 2k AND NT4, MS put in skins because consumers wanted them, have you even seen/used some of the features of winxp? like the driver rollback, system restore? I guess windows 2000 sucks as well then because MS threw some win9x features into NT4 and called it win2k. i don't know anyone who would want skins in the OS-the ppl who do either use alternate shells or apps like Window Blinds. I never really felt the urge to make my win2k look like a christmas tree. As for throwing in win9x features, MS did make the interface similar to 98/ME and they actually got it almost right since gaming support is better than NT4. They actually made win2k with stability of NT and ease of use of win9x. I agree that there are many promising features but almost all of the ones pronounced as killer ones are already implemented using 3rd party software since some guys figured it out sooner than MS. (if you check cdwriter properties tab, you will see that they borrowed it from Roxio or something). Same goes for remote assistance. There is already a niche of products that do just that. Any cases more serious than a 'HELP, I'M TOO STUPID TO CLICK 'HELP' IN THE START MENU' would probably require on-site or phone help. Like a user screwing up their drivers or services to the point where the system won't even start. jdulmage, feel free to list the ones you like the most, it's been a long time since i have done a good line-by-liner.
13. but then pirates would have nothing to laugh at.

I think WindowsXP looks lame

can you ppl read? mebbe you guys should reread the posts several times and have your family members reread them and then agree on the meaning because some of you ppl are in dire need of it(Forum jackass award goes to jdulmage of course). I agree that it looks gay (key word being LOOKS in case you haven't noticed). Before you get your panties in a twist, i used it myself. I do agree that some feature are pretty nice. the most notable of them is fast user switch. driver rollback sounds cool too. it's all cool but i don't want my os to look like a cross-breed between MacOS and Netscape 6. Computer and the OS are just tools, not barbie dolls. As for the OS being made for children, i have to agree that it is significantly dumbed down compared to win2k. check my new brown dog http://a676.g.akamai.net/f/676/987/12h/p...ks/grab0006.JPG here's what i mean by dumbed down: http://a676.g.akamai.net/f/676/987/12h/p...bks/horror2.jpg i agree that if xp is as stable as win2k then ME-->XP is a must for any loser stuck with that POS. WIN2K-->XP is not too significant. hmm, i don't really think that 'compatibility advances' would make all dos/win9x apps or games run w/o a hitch. The only real benefit is that there will be only a single windows platform instead of 2. Remote desktop is also pretty good but it needs a WORKING net hookup. if your system is hosed to the point where you can't even log on or your networking is messed up then RD is useless. I also wonder how secure it is given that it's up to the user to create passwords which are blank by default. i love waffles. 15. i know some ppl willing to switch to win2k but being unable to do so due to hardware manufaturers being too lame to make drivers for real operating systems. Since xp is the new version and hopefully the last nail into win9x coffin, i think that they will have no choice but to start making drivers(unless they are wdm) because old excuses won't work anymore. I was wondering if those drivers will work on win2k as well.

Interesting Install Tid Bit

same ppl who can't tie their own shoes but are well capable of doublie-clicking any .vbs file they receive thorough email and then wonder why their computer is suddenly sick.

What would happen if I replace my shell32.dll?

if you gonna do that, be sure to save a copy of the original file. Also, you might need to shut down windows file protection. Make sure you know how to use recovery console though.
