Need opinions - Best video card in terms of support for 2k(a

Quote: Yes everyone agrees that the ATI hardware is good but throughout their entire history it's always been drivers drivers drivers. Without the drivers it's just another piece of silicon. It's like a BMW without gas or battery. Yeppe! I guess that you can patch crappy drivers later, but you cant patch bad hardware, so getting the hardware built is ATIs priority.

Need opinions - Best video card in terms of support for 2k(a

Quote: I personally love ATI video cards ! Why do some of you puck on it ? This I don't understand... I began with the RagePro, then Rage128 and Rage128Pro, and I plan to install the Radeon 64 as soon as I have the bucks for it ! I can play DVD's whitout a glitch, and the latest games at 1024* or 1152* res, why ask for more ? Of course, I crave for the latest 3D effects (hardware antialiasing, pixel shading,...); be patient is my rule, I can wait for top notch products to lower their prices !... Show me someone flawless...?! ATI always comes with a solution; sooner or later might be their real problem... but why blame them so loud ?! I don't want to spit at Nvidia, in spite of the fact they're doing their best to gain access to a monopoly position just like some other Big Brother(s) Stay cool ! I think most of us would agree that there hardware seems to be good quality. However, the support and drivers just plain SUCK. I have a love/hate relationship with ATI its like "hey All in wonder, cool idea, what! no drivers! Ihate you!"

Well I really like the All in Wonder, but it stinks that ATI is the only people to come out with an all-in-one card. I may look into the Radeon 2 I suppose, Ill probably wait till XP comes out and see what happens. The Radeon 2 All in Wonder will prolly be fairly pricy though.... (anyone know a release date) I guess its a wait and see kinda thing. (What the heck does ATI stand for anyway? Annoying Technology Inyourcomputer?)

    I Meant X-Com Collection

Hmm... is xcom VGA? I suppose you got a new comp, sometimes certain programs will not like super-fast processors compared to the processors of the day. What video card do you have?
  5. Quote: Has anyone else had this problem? It's only happened since I upgraded to Windows 2000. Thanks for the help. I have sounds disabled, and I get beeps occasionally- when I get email from outlook, and when I empty my recycling bin. Theres prolly a registry hack to turn off the beeping...

General Questions about the ATI radeon card

Quote: ATI is horrible about support in general, and especially under Win2k. I had a Voodoo 4 4500 AGP that performed better than the 32MB DDR Radeon in Win2k. Any nVidia card will run better than the RADEON's, despite the benchmarks, the drivers make or break the hardware. My serious advice to you is get a GeForce 2. The Pro's can be found online for 0 easily, and sometimes that includes shipping. GF3's will run about 0, but it all depends on your budget. I would take that Radeon back and buy a card with good drivers--pick a GeForce ANY GeForce. Win2k may not be designed for games, but I have found that if you have a fairly beefy system you can run games just fine. ATI had better get crackin' on NT-based OS drivers as XP will be based on the NT code. I have an All in Wonder 128, and they promised full support in Mar 2000, We just got full support in Mar/May... 2001. So althought I think the All in Wonder is awesome in saving space in your system with good capture, dvd, and decent video, I think Ill be waiting a few months to get XP...

    Why doesnt outlook.exe go away?

So whenever I exit Outlook it sometimes isnt killed, and sits in the task manager soaking up a nice fat 10 megs of ram until I kill it. This screws up other things in my system like my modem ussually wont dial and outlook simply wont load. (presumably because outlook.exe is there). Why does outlook hang around? How do I stop this?

stopping applications at start up ?

One place is in the control panel- Control Panel->Admin. Tools->Services Youll find things that are memory resident, such as norton auto-protect and what not.

    Why doesnt outlook.exe go away?

I dont have a PDA, but I assume it stays in memory to get mail even when Outlook, the application/window, isnt... Ill have to play with settings...

    Startopia w W2k

Anyone get this to run under Windows 2000?
  11. so if I leave 2k running for a while, eventually some process, that I assume is norton's autoprotect thingy starts leaking 60+ megs of ram, and I cant kill it (access denied). Anyone else have similar probs. The name of the process is NAVAPSVC.EXE w/ 9 hours cpu time (computer been running 2 days?) and 66,212 K of ram. Ussually if I restart this fixes things, Im live up[censored] now to see if that helps, but Ive live update often, and this has been going on for quite some time. Doug

    Weird Problems with 2k (SP2?)

Whenever I click an application on the taskbar, it doesnt gain the focus, only when I alt-tab to the application will it gain the focus. When I simply click the taskbar, it flashes (the taskbar application box) but wont take the focus... Anyone else ever have this problem? I never had it until I installed sp 2.

    NFL Madden 2001 + W2K????

I have madden 2k1 and I have had a few problems with it, most are related to the poor/nonexistant direct 3d support (for rage 128), so I switched over to software and it works fine. What are your system specs?
  14. mebe... XenoPhobia? Just wondering... NT stands for new technology, what could XP stand for?

Its a little more complicated then that... you can typically always "make a room" which will spawn a server elsewhere. Then theres setting up a dedicated server, which means setting up a computer dedicated to serving the game that you are running. If you want more info go to planet***** and search around for how to set up a server/dedicated server.

    Best action game?

DEUS EX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or anything by former looking glass. Sys Shock 2 was also very awesome.
  19. Just curious what youve always wanted to be able to do in a winndows environment, but is either impossible/available or you dont know how. 1) Ive always wanted to be able to alpha blend any 2 windows together so I could be using one and still be able to see through the window Im using to something else. Maybe this is posible, but I cant figure it out. 2) On the same note, Id like to be able to make any given window "always on top" so that I could more easily look at multiple widnows.
  20. Well looky what I found! I found a very cool program called alpha vr, you can get it at cnet, and I believe its free ware. It lets you make any window always on top, alpha blended, both, you can also save widnow settings... Very cool so far Doug
  21. Well I just had a fun time with lite step! Id say it had some very cool ideas, just bad implementation and a very high learning curve. Also litestep requires you to alter some registry values to install/uninstall, these can be hard to find...
  22. hey, ge0ph! awesome site dude! I have issues with the object desktop environment- I mean its seems soo gaudy, and looking at it gives me a headache (notice the little rectangles around each button). Also it seems to suck up ram... Maybe I havent given it much of a chance, but what if I just want to add a little button up on every windows title bar to snap it always on top? Keeping the rest of the windows desktop looking the same. Can this be done with minimal effort?
  23. Yeah, Ive experimented with window blinds + other shells. I cant say any are terribly stable... I really wish it was easier to interchange/customize shells in windows whether they be GUI or command line... Xiven - I think you are getting at similar things I am, viewing multiple windows in a non-cumbersome way is difficult in the typical explorer shell. BTW... anyone that has any alternative shell/GUI enhancing progys that dont suck up ram, feel free to share.

Controlling 2000 via the Command line

What might help you is to type-"help" in a dos prompt. This lists all the dos commands. Im not sure about the things you are asking about though. Doug
  25. Im trying to automate more tasks, but lots of times I need to set some flags to do certain things or what not. Does anyone know where I could find a comprehensive (psuedo-'man pages') for command line params for windows tools? More specifically if anyone has info on defrag or disk cleanup...
