Why is Windows 2000 pro the best OS choice for Internet user
Vampyr replied to pr-man's topic in Slack Space
I'm not gonna say linux is the best OS for games...mainly for one reason, the lack of games for linux. Right now whistler runs games faster than win2k or winme. Though the only "pro" linux comment i can make is that the games that are available for linux run faster than they do in Windows. I think this may have something to do with the way linux handles memory, or the fast file system?? All i know is that in quake 3 and unreal tournament i can see a noticible speed increase in linux over win. -

Linux does have better gaming support now than it did back then. Nvidia has released newer linux drivers that support redhat 7. The new version of X-Server has also sped up performance quite a bit. I haven't run benchmarks yet bun i have noticed that quake 3 in linux runs faster than quake 3 on winxx and mac machines. Not totally verified yet but i do notice a difference. (I can play quake 3 at 1280x1024 in linux and only 1024x768 in winxx and yes, that includes whistler as well.) But unfortunatly there isn't a big selection of games as developers have just started porting titles. Goto www.lokigames.com to see a recent list of ported titles.

And regarding linux, I doubt it will run linux. Most current versions of linux require 24+mb of ram. You might be lucky if you can find a super old version of SuSE or Mandrake. -

What you have is an old proprietary CDROM drive. This goes back to the old days of when your CD-ROM plugged into your soundcard. What you need is special DOS MODE drivers that support your specific controller card. Chances are your drive will be a mitsumi drive. What you need is the CR-54x drivers. -

Your board should support a P!!! 700 with 100fsb. All you'll probably need to do is a bios update.

Removing Whistler safely from Dual Boot configuration
Vampyr replied to ZedAgent's topic in Hardware
Kill the Whistler partition. Edit the boot.ini. If using 9x/ME boot with a boot disk and in dos type fdisk /mbr -
Reinstall windows in engrish

Disable useless startup programs (MSN, ICQ, Norton Antivirus) and keep the amount of programs running in the taskbar down to a bare minimum. ICQ is major mem hog
-
I had the same problem once before. It turned out to be a bad stick of ram.

I can set up a Linux router disk for you if you would like. I did crazykiller's linux router. All you'll need is a minimum of 12mb of ram in the router and two ISA ethernet NICs (Kingston KNE20 series). All i need from you is your tcp/ip settings. and also whether your router has an FPU or not.

ICQ me and i'll send you an ISO Win9x Boot Image. ICQ # 19901838
