hahaha...i stand corrected
-
lol, not sure you should be telling us that you are illegally downloading software.
-
nah, I already topped out this server's max "allowed" speed of 49.99 Kbps, it won't go higher, haha
-
Quote: That would be the most effective way to do it if you're concerned about downloading only what you need since only the packages you select will be downloaded and installed. Of course, if you're only on a 56k then that presents a problem... You could always buy on of those books that supply a complete distro as well as a concise guide to Linux for about USD. Yeah, but you were dealing with LAN speeds of 10Mbps+, performing this install over the internet would probably take forever... [size:9]Actually, I've never even seen LSD let alone taken it. The name comes from a combination of my earliest Internet nick, "Lysergic Acid Diethylimide" (yes, I know it's spelt wrong... It's become sort of a historical thing ) which for reasons I can't even begin to fathom was the first thing that popped into my head while trying to think up a screen name for Yahoo and my love of FreeSpace 2[/color] I like stories

You have high patience clutch, I like that 9 hours, 12 minutes remaining
-
Admiral LSD, you live up to your name (druggy) to think I would do that...I won't be pulling that move, it'll take twice as long to do it that way, hehe. I'll just let it download, i'm going out tonight, so when I come back, it'll be damn near done.

GeForce4 T14200 128 MB is what I would go for. It is only a few dollars more than what you are getting for the GeForce 3, plus, the 4400 isn't all that much more exciting.

Quote: You don't need a Masters Degree in programming to issue three commands on a command line. I know absolutely no C and I can compile software just fine. A few weeks ago I compiled Apache 2.0.36, PHP 4.2.1, Postfix and ProFTPd on a machine I'm in the process of setting up as a server. Granted installing binary packages is considerably easier, particularly under Red Hat (and other rpm baesd distros) since all you have to do is type rpm -ivv {package name}, but binary packages aren't available for all the major open source projects. You don't have to install everything on offer, you can cull an RH install down to about 600-700Mb. Other distros can install into even less than that. Oh, I believe that for a minute, but the point is, having to download 2 GB of waste, just to install only 600 to 700 MB of it. There should be a way to only have to download what you need, it's annoying. Time Remaining: 9 hours, 54 minutes. ;(

Exactly...and how is it in windows, double click, install, finished. I shouldn't need a masters degree in programming to use Linux. I just started downloading RedHat, and jesus, another complaint. Why the hell is the OS almost 2 GBs big? All I need is an OS, not a bloat boat.

Quote: I agree with this statement which is why my machine currently runs Windows XP If I could fully migrate to Linux I would have done so ages ago. Probably same here, but it lacks. It also lacks in something called up[censored]. I don't want to have to download 500 MB every time I need to fix a problem in the OS. The security holes and bugs are there (even viruses now), but because they don't have a "Windows Update" equivelant, you have to wait until they release a revision. Last year's bug reports show 3 different distros of Linux having more security holes/bugs in it than Windows 2000, which sat roughly in the middle of that chart....so I would love to see an easier way of handling those problems.

Yea well all I can submit to this thread is that Windows 2000 Server with Apache is awesome. The end.

Fragmentation increases badly....some files take longer to access because of the compression ratios....and I think you may have to compress new files once they hit a certain limit, I'm not sure. If you are talking about the disk compression that NT has built in, where you can compress files to save space or whatever, bad choice, because if you switch to FAT32, or reinstall Windows, you may have a problem accessing them....including using PartitionMagic. Once when I did that, and tried to use PartitionMagic, it told me that I had compressed files and couldn't do that, so I uncompressed them, and then when I finished the PartitionMagic job, all of my files were ****ed. Old File Name and Extension: oneandonly.wma New ****ed File Name and Extension oneandon.ly and another appeared called oneandon (no extension) It ruined everything.

First thing...install the latest Nvidia drivers, leave it at that...then do you have on the AGP Miniport drivers? Because my friend has a GeForce 4 with XP and it runs fine...
-
Yea...Which this really wasn't even a discussion about. Linux has a long way to go in terms of making it user-friendly. I don't want to spend 28 hours setting it up, when I can install Windows and set it up the way I want it (including apps and games) in under 3.

I hope you know a lot of programming, because you won't get past the first 6 hours of hell without it. The next 6 are easier, and then the next 6 after that, where you go hunting for all of your old programs is a pain, then the final 6 hours is when you'll be formatting the ye ol' ext2 partition and going back to Windows. So I hope you are prepared. Last time I used Linux, it caused me to have to go and buy a new CD-ROM drive, because when I remotely opened my CD drive from a different computer, it totalled it...brand new and everything. Anyways, I'm done *****ing, it's your decision where you go. I would do RedHat, but please, use something like Winex, lol. Finally, good luck to you...you'll need it.

Record companies want to be able to hack P2P networks legall
jdulmage replied to Xiven's topic in Slack Space
Yea...not likely. The day they make hacking legal, is the day I throw my computer away. Just like how a number of states were trying to pass a bill saying that anyone under the age of 18 is not legally able to rent or purchase video games with above Teen ratings. -
Isn't there where all open source is heading? Sad story

Ohhhh, ok, I see it...you're just trying to brag

Quote: I didn't know it existed above 512 MB.... I put a gun to his head and sold him a Win XP OEM. and had my guys install it. I can relate to that. I often wonder "If they have 'expert' friends, why do they need us to help build and install when their 'expert' friends could do it for little to no cost?" I hate people like that. But we know, the customer is always WRONG

You guys kill me sometimes Not literally... anyways.. yeah, but see, you are doing enough with the system to need a nice set up like that. I'm really focusing on people who have systems much like yours just to play Diablo II and Warcraft III, lol. It isn't worth the price I don't think. (By the way..this huge thread isn't huge enough yet, and plus, it isn't really bashing anyone, except those ol' grannies who play Solitare)

Yea, it was the same with me and the Superbike series, it was like "wow, I update to the latest drivers, then switch compatibility modes to Windows 98/Windows Me" and they both work now. It's amazing isn't it

Quote: Actually, I don't come here enough to stay on the top 10 list. I'll be moving off of it fairly soon. With JD back? I give it a week. I'm over at the [H] as NecessaryEvil now. HEY! That wasn't nice A lot of people aren't here, at least, not as many as I remember "back in the day". The only reason why I would be a problem is if someone out there makes me a problem, because I sure as heck won't be starting any problems around here.
