Well earlies in a thread in the Hardware section I explained my probbs with my IBM Deskstar HD. As I today got my new IBM Deskstar 120GXP 80GB HD and installed it. It made disturbing noises aswell... those stopped however and after installing XP i noticed that the icons in the left window of explorer were missing? They showed up later however and all was fine untill i put in my old (not so good HD) to extract some files from it and after that the icons are gone. I have tried everything from refreshing them to rebuilding icons using Tweak UI. I also installed ICQ and then copied my ICQ from my old HD over the new one (I have done this before without any probbs) but ICQ wont connect? The difference from the other times is that this time (after a stupid mistake) my OS is on F: instead of C: (this can't have anyting to do with it, can it?) Other than this I must say that the GXP120 is a very lownoise and fast HD! Appreciate any help on the matter... PS I have tried to install themes to get the icons working, but no luck

Left click on a folder in the start menu. Then right click and hold and drag and drop to where you whant it. That's all!

A substancial amout of time has passed since my entering of this post and the ICQ thing was fixed by installing again. The Expolrer Icons are there now. I havn't done anything to get them back, they just appeared once and now they are there to stay. I think your icons will appear too in time

Well, I've been hangin' out on DC alot lately and that is a hub based peer to peer filesharing program. Problem is, some hubs only accept ppl from sertain ISPs and therefor they check the IP number. This may not be the cleanest thing to do... but I'd like to go in there anyway. So now I wonder, is there a way to mask/change my IP (not change entirely cause i have a static IP, but only make it look like it is changed to others)?

I bought this HD (IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30GB) 17 months ago. I had a PII back then with a 6GB HD and this HD was a major upgrade in storage posibilities. Then about 9 months ago I bought a new Mobo, processor and ram along with another HD (IBM Deskstar 60GXP 60GB). And about 3 weeks ago I needed to whipe my XP and reinstall (It had not been whiped for a while). As I wanna install I get some strange things going... XP refuses to install to my drive. It sais that there isn't a compatible partition... So i go out in the repair shell thingy and format to NTFS (Shouldn't have to cause the install progg fixes this normally). Still it won't install... I take the drive (30GB one) to my friends and we backup stupp from another partition and we find a problem on it using partition magic. The error is corrected but i still can't install... So i take the drive to the shop where i bought it and the run IBM HD repair on it. After that all is ok. Then A week later the HD starts to make scratch noises agai (it did so before also). I used chkdsk /r to repair and recover data from unredable segments (12 at the time). Then 4 days later the sound start again... another chkdsk /r and 18 segments are unredable... that was done today. And now (4 hours later) it makes the scratch sound again and it will keep deteriorating... i know this for a fact... When my new 80 IBM Deskstar 120GXP arrives I will ghost my partition to that one and send it in again... This isn't so much of a question, but do anyone have anything to say about what i have been experiencing? -Thx guys!

I'm still using the 21.83 for my TNT2 Ultra card... the 23.11 gave me disp4.dll BSOD But as long as it works, don't temper with it!
-
Well things kinda got out of hand there on the end... I get the same BSOD about "irq not less than or equal" upon every shut down. I use XP aswell but I have a totally different ISP (namely Bostrteam) and I have a external ADSL modem that doesn't use any drivers.. My comp never shuts down because of the problem. Only thing that happens is that when i choos to shut down my comp, i get the BSOD... Any thoughts?
-
Well it sounds to me liek its the mobo. Liek you've already said. My friends comp had some serious probbs aswell and I tried everything untill i tried to boot whith only the HD and a really old 4MB videocard. That did the trick, but then i checked his real videocard in my comp and it ran fine... so i switched the ram and that was fine too... only mobo left...

Well, let's assume (just for an instant) that I have found a open proxy on another network. How do I go about, changing my proxy to that one? I am using XP. And I have no clue where to alter the proxy server choises...

Stay of the Via 4in1 they are known to cause trouble...

Well I dunno if anyone has a great answer, I guess i have to call my ISP about it, but i figured i could ventilate it to hear what you know... (If no one has a clue, it's ok, I will post the answer from my ISP here later on). Well I have recently gotten a new ISP and with this DSL I don't have to connect everytime (Like with my old one. Ok I used LF connection keeper, so it was as if I didn't connect) It works like this: I put in a gateway, DNS server and a IP number that is always mine and as soon as my comp is on it is connected to the net. But if I get a second comp and whant to have them both connected at the same time, the other com doesn't have a IP that my ISP will accept. I don't know how the ADSL routers work in this manner. And I also don't know if a 2nd Ethernet card in my 1st comp that connects to the 2nd one and the 2nd gets a IP from the 1st will work? And also, if someone else uses my IP to connect, will I be "locked out" during that time? If a IP theft can be done, will my ISP notice it and log it so it won't happen again? A lot of questions here, and I will get them answered, but plz feel free to thow in your thoughts!

That's a load of my mind... Thx again!

Quote: On the other hand, if that IP isn't really a static but just one that you chose No, I got a IP on a paper from my ISP. I wasn't free to choose. But nothing sais that it is my comp that uses it? Maybe the physical location but nothing else. Quote: As for sharing the connection, all you have to do is add a second ethernet card. Then in the properties for that first card (the DSL one) you enable internet connection sharing. Your second card will be assigned 192.168.0.1, and the other computer can get an IP from you dynamically (it will get 192.168.0.***). I mentioned that earlier but your way to put it was much better to understand I havn't recieved an answer yet. But I will and I dunno if they can ad anything to what You've just said... Thx CUViper!

I experienced the same thing as you did klona (yesterday infact) My Peer to peer connection was working properly and my ICQ aswell but I could not brows or ping... I had to restart my comp too to get it working... hmm... About you having to shut down ZA everytime, can't you make a makro that (or schedule)shuts the ZA off and on again afterwards? and why would your con go down after 24h? that seems really bad? What does your ISP say about this? It surely can't be a normal thing can it?

I tried to run my old favorite game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe" and it wont start at all. Gives me a message about it not finding the Com 3?!??! Why would a program whant to find that? It cant be the mose can it? I tried both my orig. Disks and a DLd copy from the net and none works? I'ts not a great pain but it would be fun to play it in a nostalgic sense

Im currently using a TNT 2 Ultra card from Leadtec. It's a good card (although a little out of date) and I'm thinking of getting a Geforce 3 card this spring. The thing is, when i connect the coputer to the TV, the screen wont "blow" up to fit the entire TV screen. (I currently have a 32" Widescreen with format settings but it still leaves black parts on the sides. I had a 20" regular TV before and that was even crappier.) Now I wonder if someone has a Geforce 3 with TV out and maybe he/she could tell me if it is better with this card. (manufacturer aswell plz) And to everyone else who knows gfx cards, what brand is the best? Thx all!

Are you sure sapiens? The cables that came with my mobo are made up of more "cables" than my old ones and they are stiffer and more densely packed. (in the flat version). I'm not saying that you are incorrect, merely expressing my doubt.

I have been using a Pioneer DVD (Slot in)for about 2 years in both W2K and now in XP. I also use a SCSI card (Adaptec AHA 2940) to which I connect a CD-RW (Yamaha 8x8x24x) (Since 6 months). This config has worked fine thru both RC1 and RC2 and with the final XP release (2600) which i currently use. Up until now that is. My DVD doesn't wanna copy big files or multiple files to the HD. (i.e. files greater than 100MB) It starts the copy and then it gives me a error mess that says something like: Can't proceed because of an I/O error. The DVD is connected to Secondary IDE and is Master there (and only drive on that IDE channel). I have been suspecting the IDE controller but I can't seem to pinpoint the problem? The other prob. is my CD-RW. It won't read anything at all. And writing is out of the question? I don't know if the two problems are related? I mean the RW is a SCSI device. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive, checking in the SCSI bios. But with nop result. Windows claims that the Disc might be unreadable or have the wrong file system, but neither is the case of course. I lended my drive to a friend who did not get it to work either. He said that his comp didn't fully recognise the SCSI adapter? I have tried installing ASPI drivers for W2k (not for XP) but that didn't help. Anyone know anything? Please help me! If you need storage space, and can live with the lower rpm then this HD is the one to choose: Seagate Barracuda 180: 181.6GB SCSI U160 WIDE 7200Rpm 16.4Mb Cache 7.4 ms access time!!! A monster I tell you!!! And also regarding the 15000rpm monsters they are seagate cheeta dries and range between 18.4 and 36.7GB and they also come in fiberchannel options both having 3.7 ms access ties Seagate have been leading the SCSI drives for a long time... Id go with them... Talking IDE I use only the IBMs for them being quiet...

Ok this one is for all you scsi gurus out there
Manos replied to Four and Twenty's topic in Hardware
I had 2 SCSI devices earlier. 1 Internal Yamaha CD-R (2x4x) and on this I set the terminator in the raer of the device. and I also had 1 exteral device being a 3.2 GB seagate HD. For this external one I used an old Macintosh HD case that had an external terminator. If you have a external device. Usually I whould think that there is a ternminator built into it. And every internal drive has a terminator choise in the rear jumpers. As for the cable converter. I had an SCSI 1 connection on the Mac box and a SCSI 2 connection on the SCSI card. I got the adapter for free from a friend, so no help there.. but, you didn't mention if you had a external device (wich I believe you have since all the internal cables are the same (I think)). This converter must niot be that hard to find at a large store... Now, I'm in sweden, so I can't help you there either sorry -
Just curious as to why you whould want the recycle bin at all? I never use it i always delete stuff right away. i mean, if im not sure if I wanna delete it, then why whould I then do so? and also... doesn't the recycle bin lead to fragmentation of the HD?

I also had a USB modem before I got ADSL and i had never had those transfer rates with another modem (used a P2 333Mhz back then) I had 5kb/s all the time and that's about all you can get out of a modem. (a 56kbit modem that is)
