  1. Well I'm glad it all worked out fine! Those Installations can get messy if you don't know exactly what you shold do. (Guess thats why I'm doing all the OS installations for my friends )
  2. If it is a upgrade only type of CD, it can get tricky... I know from the Win98 uppg. CD that it wanted to see a installed OS somewhere that it could upgrade. What I had to do then was to direct it to itself (ie. When looking for an os to uprade, i chose the CD that i Booted from. Then i chose to install to C: (or what ever) that worked fine) Hope it will with XP aswell...

This is really great you guys... When I was talking about the guys that know alot, i really was reffering to you two I will check out the different book alternatives, many of them also have different hands on CDs with excercises that are useful. I hope that I'm not alone in being happy 'bout getting this information. I hope that there are more ppl out there whanting to kow alittle more about this issue. And a vast issue it is... Thx again... and if anyone else has anything to say.. plz do!
  4. That sound alot like monopolies to me... It iot really legal to buy a certain area? And have all the rights for your self? That if anything prohibits copmetition and shouldn't be legal anywhere? But also we don't have that many ISPs in sweden so the smaller companies that you talked about arn't really present. I'd imagine that it whould be really hard to start up a new ISP in sweden if you don't have a **** load of cash and a really super great idea and BW... I also wanted to thank you very much Clutch for makeing e understand how the IT consortium works over there... It's really been insightful to me! thx again!
  5. Well if you dont have anything on the drive that you want to save there then the easiest way is to enter bios and make the CD rom the first boot device. Put in the XP CD in the cd drive. Boot up from the CD choose install. and then in the istallation menu choose either to delete the partition and create a new one or just choose to format the drive. This can only be done if you boot from the CD not if you choos clean install from windows. I have done this procedure like a zillion times and it is no problemo at all..

    winxp + sblive: weird problem

Hmm... have you the lates drivers for sb live from MS update? And not that I have read all the posts here, but a lot of ppl seem to have a prob with Voodo based gfx cards and XP...If the problem only occurs during gameplay, maby its the gfx card and not the sound card. I also use a SB Live and that works fine... Athlon 1200 512 Ram MSI K7T 266 Pro Leadtech TNT 2 Ultra (TV OUT) 10/100 Ethernet card 30Gb IBM 75GXP 60Gb IBM 60GXP Pioneer DVD 6x Yamaha 8x8x24x SCSI

About the CD burning progg... Use Nero 5.5 really great progg. No compability issues what so ever with XP. I have SB live and it works fine. I upgraded to the latest drivers but it worked before also... And you didnt say that you had a problem with it did you?

    Aopen DVD drive

Well... the nr 1 thing to do is to make sure that the region is right on the DVD. (I live in sweden (reg 2) and almoast always watch reg 1 movies.) If the region is right, there shouldn't be a problem really... If there is maby you should talk to the company that you bought it from... maby something is wrong with the Hardware? The laser may be damaged? Since CDs and DVDs use different laser settings...

    new card

As far as I know, al Nvidia based chipsets work fine with XP. I use a TNT 2 Ultra card and i have friends using Geforce 2 MX, Geforce 2 GTS. Those work fine. I myself never really liked the 3DFX cards. Too blurry grafix. If you have the money I recommend buying a Geforce 3 card from either Elsa or Leadtech. y TNT 2 is a leadtech and that has never failed me. Great card all categories. But what i hear Elsa makes really great cards as well, and the best part is that you can transform a Elsa Gladiac card into a Elsa Gloria cars with only a few mods. (re routing some components) But that goes for the older models. If you use your computer for games, go for a Geforce 3 DDR if you dont have the oney to buy that a Geforce 2 GTS is tottaly sufficent.

You don't need to tweak WinXP like that?

Great bottom line Ben. But the real issue I think is that at least I whant to personalize my computer (and everything else for that matter). I want my machine to be perfect, fast and reliable. And ost important easy for ME to use. Thats the thing... I want my room to suite me. I want my car to suite me. And if you want these things to suite you, then you have to mess around a bit to get it that way. In it's original state any MS Os is made to suite as many ppl as possible and the limited easy to use options embedded are for the normal user. If you know a bit more you will most likely wanna get more fro your Os and your machine. Its all about getting more that you have without paying more (eg. clocking your processor and stuff)
  13. Hmm... about the program in the first post... If i have a FTP server... will it be unusable to my friends if I apply this IP changing thingy? Do I require a DNS thing for my friends to still be able to log in to my FTP? BTW... Alecstarr plz send that CDROM wake up to me
  14. Hmm... That seems odd... Isn't competition amongst the telcos supposed to bring the prices down and the BW up? I mean... I can't win the war by giving my costumers worsend cons and raised priceing? The wireles cons, what are those? can they really be as fast? I work at ericsson here in sweden and the wireless solutions that we bring now are merely for mobile-/cell phones. In the future (upcomming GPRS) the transfer rates are going to be higher and support a greater data transfer. But from were I'm sitting, it seems the raised capacity in the links (that ericsson produces) is to small to support the growing demand of the consumers and the fast expanding usage of the internet both via computers and cellphones. Anyways, I see what you mean by it being a rough market in the middle west. But in the places where theres a lot of ppl. new telcos can raise up and get a big market share right?

The speeds at 10Mbit are Ethernet as far as i know. But then again they use optocable between the houses and the terminals and im not all into the different connection types. As far as i know you cant change yourrate for a specific time here. But i can assure you that my con. is stable. It doesnt depend on how many ppl are up in y neighbourhood at the moment. (As far as i have noticed anyway). And I also do believe that the major companies that use up a really big load of Bandwidth have 24/7 assistans and monitoring. But, the thing is that arpanet started off in the US and the internet boom started there too. So it whould only be right that the US have the best coverage, highest bandwidths and lowest priceing in the world. But then we have poor little old sweden (Finland are not too far behind either) we are cheep as hell, we have a really good coverage and BW supply is really good to. OK sweden is a pretty small country compared to the US. But still there are like a illion times as many americans as there are swedes so you do have the manpower to build and the cash aswell. I don't have all the facts really... but I was merely concerned over the overpriceing you guys have over there...
  17. MAN I'M PISSED OFF TOTALLY NOW!!! I live in sweden. And i always thought of the US as a great country, espescially regarding the IT development. And you say you pay like $50 a month for DSL. I have ADSL 521kbps and i pay $30 a month. I can live with the $20 buck difference... I know that the US is a little more expensive. BUT!!! When U say that a T1 at lameass 1.54Mbit costs $1500 a month then that really makes me mad out of my skin!!! Why whould anyone pay that silly amount of money for that bad connection? The ISP im using is a former gov. owned company named Telia and they supply the best coverage over sweden regarding so called broadband Internet. The company BoNet offers a 2.5Mbit con (both this and my Telia con is via normal telephone line and needs only an ADSL modem) And their prise is $25 per month. So i pay more for less. And listen to this. And i kid you NOT!!! The company Bred Bands Bolaget(they are really limited to big citys) offer a 10Mbit internet con. for about $35 a month. There is a second ISP in sweden called Sunet which also delivers 10Mbit at similar rates. You can visit the homepages of these copanies if you like... Some of them have info in english. On the start page of bonet (www.bonet.se) it says 249 kronor ($25) in bold text and also 2.5Mbit. www.bredbandsbolaget.se and also check out www.telia.se or www.telia.com Sorry you guys have those kinds of opressor rates and i really only wanted to recomend that there are some cable modem speedup proggs out there so go search on Direct connect for instance...
  18. Another thing to do is to get the program LF Connection keeper. It is a really small progg that doesnt steal any RAM and it keeps you connected all the time. It auto connects upon windows startup (thats an option ofcourse). There are some small options to settle but nothing to complicated and then your up and running. I can't remeber the site, but if you search for it you will prolly find it. Else if then mail me and ill send it to ya...
  19. Thx alot for all th info dudes... I had the probb also and now i have fixed it. I used the fade under menus checkbox. Sorry to hear that not everybody can use that option. What is the prob do you think, that prohibits the efects button from doing its job?
  20. A simple way is to take an old win 95, DOS or win 98 Boot disc and erase all the files you dont want (except for command.com) And put in a new set of files. OK maby somewhat hard if you whant to make something special... But for my BIOS flash it was sufficient.

    Probs whith Whistler!!!

OK So I installed Whistler/Windows XP (whatever), yesterday. First of all it didn't support my USB modem (ComeOne light 56k) That's pretty bad considering it's USB and was released last year. Second, I have an external SCSI HD and windows usually detects it as "movable device" and I always have to change it. BUT Whistler/XP didn't. Althoug, the "explorer" program doesn't recognize the drive. It's very strange... This is how the prob. appears: When i brows throu my drives in "explorer" it doesn't show at all. So I enter the "device manager" to check the status in there. Bingo, there's the HD and it says "working properly". (but it's not!, or so I thought...). Opening up "Winamp", i enter a "dir" from the lost HD. Hmmm I think, this is odd?!?!?. I tried, to play a song from it and it worked. Back in the "explorer" program i press "refresh" to see if it will appear. But Noooo. Then i tried typing the drive letter in the brows list. Bingo it appears! BUT!: No icon and no volume lable, and as i check properties from right click menu it says that the FS is RAW, (I later converted from FAT32 to NTFS but still the same prob) no volume lable here either, and nothing can be changed. SO!, by browsing and typing in D: i can access the HD, and it works fine and all, but it's very disturbing and it isn't right. Also in"explorer" some "dirs" and files does not have an icon. Somebody had a similar prob? Or know how to fix it? By the way its BETA 2 build 2041 (Not to sure bout the build but its build 20XX anyway) Thanx for the support with Win2k sofar guys! ------------------ C U on the other side!
  22. OK firt of all, IRQ 9 is used by many diffrent stuff, such as Sound card, SCSI card, etc. This could be your problem. My SCSI card had serious probs under win 98, It shared IRQ 9 with the sound card, so it was disabled due to conflict, but if I disabled it manually before quitting win 98 and then manualy enabled it after startup, it worked just fine. Maby you should try to change the IRQ. This isn't always easy, you have to uninstall the modem and check the box for preset IRQ so that the modem wont choose that IRQ automatically. Another thing, is that I had the same modem and I had tons of trouble with it, so I went out and bought myself a USB modem, works great! I say return the modem and get another one... Internal modems usually suck. Sorry to say so, but i know, iv'e been there. ------------------ C U on the other side!

I installed it from within win2k and chose to install it to a different partition. I also used a NTFS formatted drive. My install got screwed up the first time too, but when I tried it agan it hang and so i just rebooted and it started over and passed thru. Maby not much help but i suggest using a NTFS formatted drive from the beginning. ------------------ C U on the other side!

    DVD software crack!

OK so this has nearly nothing to do with computers but, I hope that I reach the right persons who can help me out here. So I have a Pioneer DV-535 and the thing it needs to make it region free is a simple program that's about 2MB large. I gained this info from a company in sweden (stockholm)called DVDirect (www.dvdirect.net) They have the progg. And they whant 995 SEK (about 100 USD) for it. I whould have have bought it from them fair and square (legally OK). BUT!!!! And this is a major one!!! These guys dont whant to send the progg to me on a CD or by e-mail, cause they are afraid that I whould (or anyone else for that matter) start to distribute the progg themselves. So what I have to do is send my player to sthlm and back so the total sum for me to pay will be something like 1500 SEK (150 USD). What I'm wondering now is thet someone outthere might have the software that I need. It's a software upgrade to make the Pioneer DV-535 Region Free and Macrovision Free. It's about 2 Megs large. Man If you have it or you know somone that does... Well please PLEASE give it to me I NEED IT BADLY!!! Thankful for any kind of response! CU on the Other Side! -Manos66
