    HP Scanner issue

Hi, I have an HP 2200c scanner which is exhibiting some funny behavior. When it is plugged into the USB port, i immediately get hiss through my speakers. (seems to do this with the SBLive or the onboard audio). As soon as i unplug it, the sound goes away. When i install the (latest) HP scanning software, the scanner is detected and all seems to be happy, until... i try to scan something. It starts to load the scanning software, then locks up and starts to access the floppy drive every 10 seconds and does so until i reboot the machine. If i use the microsoft scanning wizard, i can scan pictures - but it's a crappy alternative to propper scanning software. Any ideas? Oh, it all works fine with exactly the same hardware running windows 2000, so it's definitely an XP software issue. Cheers, Giskard

    Outlook 2000 attachments

Greetings, Just started work at a new office and who are having some unusual problems with attachments. Here's how it goes... NT 4 Server running Exchange 5.5 Workstations running Windows 98/Office 2000/Outlook 2000 When e-mail is sent to most (not all)customers running Outlook Express, the message is recieved without the attachment. If the same message is sent with Outlook Express, both the message and the attachment get through. This has only been the case since the office upgraded from Office 97 to Office 2000. Any ideas. The Office suites are running service pack 2 and all patches etc. Any ideas as to what is causing the problem? Cheers, G

    Scripting Issue

Here's the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q307716 The upshot appears to be that unless i make a paid support call to Microsoft, they won't give me the file. After a little more digging, it seems that the hot fix i need is called Q307716_W2K_SP3_X86_EN.exe Is this the whole service pack or is this just the scripting patch. If anyone can mail me this file i would appreciate it. If i'm doing the wrong thing here or breaking any rules, i'm sorry. I'd just prefer not to wait for a whole service pack to fix one small issue. Cheers, G
  4. My system is similar, but not exactly the same. WinXP Pro Epox 266a Mobo AthlonXP 1600+ Radeon 32MB DDR From memory, i get around 3700 points (my machine is at home and i'm writing this at work) in 3dMark2001. I don't know how much difference the the XP CPU would make compare to your TBird, but it's probably a closer match than pr-man's effort! Cheers, giskard
  5. With Microsoft dropping support for most of their O/S's in the next 6 months, i thought i should grab a bunch of critical and security updates. What i'm wondering is whether there is a site that has these packaged together for each o/s or do i need to download each one manually from the microsoft site. Cheers, Giskard

    OS Critical updates

Hmmm. Unless i'm going blind, there doesn't appear to be any references yet to WinXP...

    OS Critical updates

As an extension to this, does anyone know of a site where i can download and keep all the XP critical/security updates other than using the Microsoft Windows Update?

    HP Scanner issue

I'm really having any image quality problems, just the softare letting me down in XP. Here's the specs of the two machines i've tried. As you'll see, about the only thing they have in common is the o/s and a via chipset on the board. System 1: Athlon XP 1600+ 512 MB Crucial DDR Ram 30 Gig Western digital Hdd Epox 8KHA+ Mobo Aopen Case With 300 Watt PSU SB Live Value Intel Pro 100 NIC Plextor CDRW Liteon DVD System 2: PIII 700e 512 MB PC133 Ram 6 Gig Quantum Hdd Aopen AX34 Pro II Mobo Macase Case With 300 Watt PSU On board audio 3Com 100 tx NIC Both systems work well with the scanner in win2k Both fail in the same manner with XP Both systems produce hiss through the speakers as soon as the Scanner is connected. XP compatibility

Greetings. I'm about to do the XP thing, but before i give my machine a date with format, i have a couple queries... My mobo is an Aopen AX34 Pro II, which uses the VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Any dramas with VIA kit? Do you still have to install the 4in1's? Finally, i have have an HighPoint ATA66 card. Is it supported ok? Or do i need to run specific drivers to make it play the game? Sorry for all the questions, but i bow to your greater experience.

    Disabling Product Activation

Take the car comparison another step further. :-) If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:- 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the car windows, shut it off, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. Only one person at a time could use the car unless you bought "CarNT", but then you would have to buy more seats. 6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would only run on five percent of the roads. 7. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "General Protection Fault" warning light. 8. New seats would force everyone to have the same sized butt. 9. The airbag system would ask "are you SURE?" before deploying. 10. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 11. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of Rand McNally road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even though they neither need nor want them. Attempting to delete this option would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50% or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Dept. 12. Every time GM introduced a new car, car buyers would have to learn to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. 13. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

    Practice Exams

Greetings, I was hoping that someone on this list could direct me to a source of some free MCSE practice exams. There seem to be a lot of study guides around, but not too much in the way of exams. Much appreciated. Cheers G

    Winmill DUN issues

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows a way to completely remove the DialUp Networking components in Winmill and do a fresh install? This sounds like it should be simple, but it isn't. I work in tech support for a small regional ISP and i found that when people upgrade from win98, their DUN breaks. Removing the components in control panel and reinstalling does nothing. It just seems to re-enable the broken DUN components. Any ideas or tips will be much appreciated. Cheers, Giskard

    Winmill DUN issues

Thanks DC. Most of the jokers that have this problem think they're running Win2k already. "Winmill, Win2k. Same thing isn't it?" I was hoping for a slightly less painful alternative. Cheers, Giskard

    How to get MCSE cert?

Greetings, I've decided to pursue an MCSE certification and could use some advice. From what i've been able to work out, i have three options. 1) Hit the books and then sit the exams. 2) Go to a training house. 3) Bootcamp? Any opinions as to which is the best method? Don't really know what the third one involves. Any good resources would be much appreciated. Cheers, G

    Scripted Logins

Hi guys. I have various connections to the net, but one in particular requires a scripted login for authentication. When i type in the username and password the first time and connect, it will authenticate properly. But on subsequent retries, authentication fails. After getting the ISP in question to check their logs, it appears that my machine sends 16*'s instead of the password. Any ideas as to why the machine is sending the 'password mask' instead of the password beneath? By the way, my other 'non-scripted' logins work just fine... Any ideas. Thanks G
  23. Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to use the old file manager in Windows 2000? Failing that, are there any good alternatives? I want to be able to rename multiple files and i don't think it can be done with windows explorer. Cheers, Giskard
