    SCSI Cd Writer

this may or may not be of help, but my burner for some reason started writing blank discs, the red light would come on and it would start writing then say it was finished yet the cd would be blank. i later found out that for some apparent reason, the aspi driver had been removed. you would probably need to go to the adaptec website and do an aspi check. cpu fan recommendations please

Finally got the cash and junked my 450K6-2 and got me a T-Bird 800MHz and AOpen AK73Pro mobo , the fan that I got tends to run warm, at idle it is 30~32C, normal 37~42C, and while playing games or anything graphics intensive it gets up to 52C then freezes the pc. Need to replace it with a better fan, any recommendations? thanks

    I'm overheating like hell!

sometimes you have to take drastic measures..usually the intake fan (located in the front) doesn't have enough of an air vent to pull in air. I had to cut out a hole in the front of the case. Big temperature differece. System Temp: Without cut = 35C With cut = 27C http://member.giga.net.tw/stevenlin/athlon.html (yah, i know, it's a crappy case, hehe)

Games freeze after 1-2 hours of play?

could be heat, i had that same problem (different video card though) popped open the box and noticed i had an scsi cable blocking the airflow to the card, moved the cable aside and felt the gush of warm air coming from the card. readjusted the cable around and it works fine now

    thermal grease question

Just out of curiousity, when I purchased my AOpen AK73 pro mobo with 800MHz T-Bird the local pc shop asked me if I wanted them to place the cpu and HSF onto the mobo, and since I've heard so many horror stories about how fragile the tbirds/durons were I told them to go ahead. However, I did not actually witness the installation, but noticed quite a good bit of thermal grease on the edge of the heatsink, which appears to me like they applied it over the complete cpu instead of just over the core. The pc still boots up fine and the temperature I'm getting are: Idle: 28~30C Normal: 32~36 C Full Load: 42~47 C This temperature was after placing additional fans to my case since I have a compact case with s***loads of hardware inside. Anyways, back to the question, would this pose a problem in the long run? Or should I remove the heatsink and clean out the excess thermal grease and just apply a thin layer over the core?

    thermal grease question

man you sure are quick hehe, thanks, I checked out that site. Oh well, I will go ahead and 'try' to get that heat sink off and remove all that excess gunk.

    thermal grease question

thanks, I read numerous sites that say thin is better. I really don't have any problems, my main concern is will it effect the cpu in the long run. I really don't want to have to remove the heatsink, the clip is really a b***h to get off. I tried already and couldn't get it off the 'gentle' way and don't really want to have to involve pliers to the scene

    AT Bus Clock??

Just wondering if anybody could help explain to me what exactly is the AT Bus Clock setting in the Bios for. I have a Gigabyte Supersocket 7 mobo and it has these options: Auto Sync Bypass CLK2/3 CLK2/4 CLK2/5 CLK2/6 7.16MHz [This message has been edited by three (edited 23 November 2000).]

    AT Bus Clock??

couldn't be the card since it works fine on the other pc i pulled it out from (p2 system) and couldn't be the mobo since i placed the tnt back and it booted up (i'm typing right now from the pc)

    AT Bus Clock??

oh yah, another thing i was wondering was video cards and their bios. I have a TNT card and replaced it with an older SiS AGP card but the pc would not even boot up. I was wondering why?

    AT Bus Clock??

tried that already before, these are things i tried in the past: switched multiplier to 5 (wouldn't boot up) switched multiplier to 5.5 (wouldn't boot up) switched the FSB to 105 MHz (wouldn't boot up) etc. etc...FSB increment of 5MHz also even tried to up the core voltage, wouldn't boot up. the only thing that would allow me to boot up was a simple core voltage 2.4v but still running at 450MHz

    AT Bus Clock??

err...thanks but somehow that just confused me even more, hehe...me a computer idiot... currently it is set at auto and has CLK2/4 set, I have an AMDK6-2 450MHz (2.2v) cpu. reason i was so interested is that i have tried in the past to overclock my cpu but couldn't get it to boot and was wondering if this had anything to do with it. current settings is 100mhz x 4.5 [This message has been edited by three (edited 23 November 2000).] [This message has been edited by three (edited 23 November 2000).]

    suggestions?

Well, I've finally had it with the ALi/TNT problem and will go get a new video card, wondering if anybody has any suggestions. Current system: AMD K6-2 450MHz Gigabyte GA-5AX Rev.4.1 (with ALi V chipset) PC100 128MB SDram Leadtek Winfast S320 16MB AGP2x (RivaTNT) 10.1 GB IBM Hard Drive Yamaha CRW4416S SCSI Cd Burner Pioneer DVD-Rom Tekram DC310/U PCI SCSI Controller Hauppauge WinTV PCI Card Soundblaster PCI64 D-Link DFE-530TX 10/100 PCI Fast Ethernet not much of a system as you can tell, and I don't want to buy a new system yet, figured I'll just get a new video card, or maybe I should toss the mobo and get a new one? which would be better? I just want to be able to get win2k running stable. p.s. heard the Vodoo cards were pretty compatible with the ALi chipset?

    suggestions?

well, from researching the web, I've found out that I'm not alone when it comes to ALi/TNT incompatibility. I have tried every driver both from the Video Card Manuf. to Nvidia Detonator drivers and none seems to work. Even all the bios updates as well as the ALi AGP drivers. (I've tried about everything btw) I constantly get random BSOD's and have only recently managed to get it running stable with the leaked Detonator 7.17 drivers. Stable meaning I can do basic web surfing, but when it comes to gaming, the BSOD's will start to re-appear. With previous drivers I was resorted to turning off ALL hardware acceleration in order to maintain stability. The BSOD's range from KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED to BAD_MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (and some others I don't recall at the moment) errors to IRQ something....I've actually had this problem for over a year now and finally have had it. Hope you have some good problem solvers for me to try. Drivers: ALi AGP 1.69e Detonator 7.17 DirectX 8 final release [This message has been edited by three (edited 21 November 2000).]

anyone try Nvidia 7.17 drivers ?

Installed the 7.xx driver, seems to be running much more smoother(stable) than the 6.xx drivers, they really sucked on my pc giving my frequent BSODs. Haven't really had time to test it out on games but being stable is what I was looking for in the first place since I've been having ALi/TNT problems ever since I installed W2K. Saw a registry tweak, will install that later and see if it boosts perfomance.
