ahh...that makes sense. kinda puzzled me there since my DVD drive on a seperate channel was being reported as that too. It was more confusing since I DO have a SCSI card for my Yamaha burner heh.

Well, it's an onboard UDMA100 controller (AOpen AK73 Pro Mobo) I was just wondering and wanted to make sure that the drive was being used as UDMA 100.

arghh!! as if that download site wasn't bad enough (speedwise) it took me over an hour to grab 9.77MB of 9.90MB and what happens? it just froze! arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

hmm...have you the latest bios for your mobo?

sounds like a driver issue to me...you sure you have the correct drivers installed? i'd re-install the driver and see if that works first

i'd say crack open the case and see the make of the mobo, write the model number down, then go to the manufacturers website and check out the specs...see what the limitations are on the processors it'll allow, that would be the first step.

It was a Gigabyte GA-5AX rev.4 based on ALi chipset. I replaced it with a Soyo SY-5EH5+ baby AT.

well, i was suspicious of the mobo since that and the cpu was the only old piece of hardware while everything was brand new...also had already noticed that a part of the mobo appeared to be burnt well, went out and bought a soyo board and it's running smoothly now...

K, was wondering if anybody experienced this problem. I have formatted some blank cd-rw's on my laptop using Direct CD and it works fine and is readable on standard cd-rom drives. However, on another machine using the same program, I can format and read/write on the burner, but cannot access the cd on any other drives, not even on other cd burners except the one on that particular machine. When I place the cd in my other burner, it says the disc is 'bad media' and can't be accessed. What I did then was use Nero to erase the cd and then re-format it again using my machine and it would work. The only differences in machines is that one is using English W2k while the other one is using Chinese W2K, same applies for Direct CD, they are the same version with the exception of language. Oh and one is a HP external cdrw and the other is a Sony Internal cdrw (manufactured for Dell Inspiron 5000). The Sony is the one that is not formatting correctly. Anybody have any ideas as to what I should check? I have placed the 'wnaspi32.dll' file in the /winnt/system32 directory, but that didn't solve the problem. Oh and the Sony is the one having format problems, though it can still read/write the cdrw's formatted using the HP drive [This message has been edited by three (edited 12 March 2001).]

well that's the thing...my hp external could format the cd's and is readable thru normal cdrom's. so it's not the media. it's just that the formating via the sony makes it only readable thru that device and no other devices period.

k, this is the problem..i'm running win2k with nero 5.0.3.9 English version of both...i'm doing some backing up at work with Chinese files/file name...but for some reason, it's really picky and will only burn them if i rename it to english file names...i haven't a clue as to why this is happening because at home on my desktop (english w2k as well) i can burn chinese file names without any problem... was wondering if anybody has any ideas.. TIA

it's not giving any errors, what happens is that there is a red x next to the file names in the nero file browser...it won't let me drag the files over. If however I change the name of the files to english, it works fine. I have tried all the settings but can't seem to find anything that works. As I said before, I can burn chinese files no problem on my desktop, but for some reason the laptop is kinda picky

well i installed the language packs both for win2k and for nero, even installed some fonts, but still no go. I logged in as the administrator on the laptop (where i'm burning the cd's) i can open, modify and delete those files without any problems so access rights is not the problem. The problem is that Nero seems to be very picky about the file names.

been having windows freeze up on me and ctrl-alt-del can't fix it, have to reboot...wonder if anybody has a fix? can't be cpu, it's at a cool 30C and it mainly locks up when i use explore,ie or oe.. well, it froze again with just the PC133 stick ram in, so i ended up putting that other PC100 stick back in and downloaded the AMD/AGP patch, loaded it up, rebooted and it's working fine now 4 days without freezing, even with a graphic intensive screensaver running while i'm not home. looks like this solved the problem *fingers crossed*

strange, it works on my TNT and Intel740 agp cards, hell, even worked on my Sony Vaio using Neomagic chip (@1fps lol =P) but it's not working on my buddies Matrox G400...says something like 3D Hardware not enabled? I'm stumped. I am trying to share a folder from my win2k laptop with other pc (win98) at work. In win98, i can see the 2k box and when i click on it, it would ask for a password..however i didn't specifiy one and leaving it blank won't let me access it. Even entering my admin password it doesn't work...anybody have any ideas?

actually by booting using the cd you can click on 'repair windows' and that should do the trick. i did that in the past, but ended up doing a clean install since i wanted to have a clean os

mine used to lock up, found out it was bad memory

i had already had both mem slots set at 'normal', the only thing i could think of was the pc100 mem stick that 'could' be causing the problem since i had that stick on the old setup as well (bought the pc133 stick with the T-Bird). oh well, i removed it last night and only have the pc133 stick in. if the problem persists then 1. the pc100 is not the problem or 2. the pc133 is also sh1tty since they are the same brand (Pro Joe, name of memory stick ) it has only been 12 hrs since then so i'll wait and see if i can have it running for more than 5 days atleast before i reboot and mess with the bios.

have a 350Watt power supply...the ram is pretty not the best quality, cheap ram, NEC i think...anyways, i'll try and remove the pc100 stick and just use the pc133 stick and see if it fixes the problem though both sticks are cheapos

nobody has any suggestions?? :-( This is the main reason I got rid of my K6-2 450MHz because of the video freezing on me..I had previously thought it was due to the ALi chipset but looks like it's doing the same with the VIA one...Could it be that I have a defective Video Card? or could it be something else? anybody??
