again? lol....i have to agree though, the k62 does pretty much suck a$$ when compared to a p2, i was running a p2 clocked at 333mhz and it was out performing a k62 clocked at 400mhz. i still don't regret purchasing a k62 450mhz for my system, if i didn't i would still be pretty clueless about pc's, all the trouble shooting, tearing apart of the pc just to get it to work really helped me get more understanding of pc's and got me to really enjoy computers more, how ironic. k62+ali chipset...man, that was mere hell! but i'm more than happy with my t-bird, running xp for 183hrs now! and with a geforce2mx hehe

nice site, took some drill tests, funny thing, i scored higher in red hat linux than i did in win2k professional, though i scored highest in win xp

just wanted to add that on this other article from anand, they seem to love dual amd's as a server/workstation platform;) Quote: If you can't tell by now, we're very impressed with the AMD 760MP chipset. In fact, one of the reasons we spent so long on this comparison is because the outcome of our results would influence what platform we used in our next database server for the AnandTech Forums. The choice is simple; the AMD 760MP is the DP workstation and server platform to have. It's reliable, it's high performing and it's very flexible; everything you'd expect from an Intel based server solution, except that it's from AMD instead. Three years ago we wouldn't be caught dead recommending an AMD based server solution. Today, we'd be crazy not to do so. http://www.anandtech.com/chipsets/showdoc.html?i=1483&p=1 maybe with my yearly bonus coming up, i might go ahead and build one to play with

i know you know more (alot more) about networking and hardware then me clutch, but all i am saying is since he wanted something within the price range of 1500 that amd would be a good solution. as for heat and stacking 10 1U cases, well, I don't think he's needing that much as it would definetly be overkill. the only thing i have run is a ftp server on my tbird and it has never failed me yet. at work for workstations, i build only amd systems since my boss is very budget concious, although he has not been dissapointed in my decisions. as long as you get decent hardware and have a capable guy around to administer it, you shouldn't have any problems.

i'm probably wrong here, but i would assume that their choice in sticking with intel on a server base platform is due to the fact that the amd platform is still relatively new and probably also the fact that it is limited to 2 cpus whereas a 'mission critical' database usually consists of numerous processors? the point is that amd is not a bad alternative and depending mainly on what your budget is i guess. but if you are just a soho user i think amd would be the way to go. btw, amd does have 1U rackmount solutions : http://www.einux.com/AServ1U1200.html and here is a benchmark comparing AMD to Pentium3 dualies as servers: http://www.einux.com/A1300SBenchmarks.html oh yah, and we all remember the supercomputer used by boeing: http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2696507,00.html Quote: Boeing on Wednesday bought a 96-processor supercomputer based on the Linux operating system and Advanced Micro Devices processors for use in designing the new Delta IV rocket that launches satellites into space. i would consider that 'mission critical'

here is their explanation http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1401&p=4 Quote: Although our last server upgrade consisted of a large migration to Socket-A platforms using AMD Athlon processors, a need for multiprocessor support for our single Forums database server kept the Athlon out of the running for this upgrade.?With the AMD 760MP chipset still four or five months away from being readily available, the only remaining option was to pursue an Intel based solution.

anandtech went with amd for some of their servers didn't they?.. http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1456 http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1305&p=5 aceshardware has a nice article up too, they went a different route http://www.aceshardware.com/read.jsp?id=45000240

in ICQ, go to 'preferences' -> 'connections' -> 'user' pick under 'Advanced Users' the "Not using Proxy" option and the default "Use dynamically allocated port numbers" that should work

weird, everytime i submit a post, i get a 'page cannot be displayed' msg. am i the only one getting this?

there will probably never be an end to this debate and personally i think those tests aren't fair when comparing materials simply due to the fact that the design of the heatsink itself plays a very important role. what would be interesting to see and end this debate is to see 2 heatsinks made of the exact same design with the exact same fans on the exact same testbed, with only one exception, the material, one being pure aluminum while the other being pure copper. that would definetly end this debate.
-
well alec i hope you weren't refering to me cause i never said you said that...anyways..on a side note...i always thought the best heatsinks were the copper/aluminum combo? the ones with the copper inlay and the aluminum fins... they were always the winners on hs roundups...

i remembered back when win2k had agp problems and amd/microsoft came out with a reg patch that fixed it...perhaps doing this again will solve the problem?? the only reason i thought of this is cause when i installed win2k with sp2 on my pops pc i still had the agp problems till i went and installed the reg patch. and also, i don't have that problem you guys have and thinking maybe cause i did a 2k->XP update instead of a clean install...anyways..just a thought tho maybe it doesn't matter...but something to try anyways

just a suggestion here, but wouldn't it be better to have those links to articles pop open a new window instead of using the same window?
-
yah, i'm used to the right click 'open in new window' myself but i was just mentioning that as a way of keeping users on the site instead of directing them to the other sites.

as far as i know about copper, it can't be extruded like aluminum can there for has to be machined from a copper block, that's why you see most copper hs out there are manufactured in plates then attached onto a copper plate, this saves on the costs. the company i work for had 5 machines that were used to manufacture from one single copper block, but my boss decided against it due to the costs involved. as for clutch's remark about copper for the automobile industry, i agree..and also like to add that weight was probably another consideration.
