Windows XP not detecting ACPI compliant system
RussellWild replied to nightwolf09's topic in Hardware
Hmm, Windows 2000 did the same when I freshly installed it on my new system. I did not touch any of the BIOS settings and when it finished installing I had no power options whatsoever, not even APM! After I installed my video card drivers though (which were the first item to be installed), the whole lot appeared - Hibernate, APM, soft button etc. And they all work too. Maybe it's linked to the video drivers? R -
Hello - I'm looking for an upgrade motherboard which supports AMD's Athlon (probably 1.4GHz) and PC2100 DDR RAM. I've looked at a few Asus ones so far. Can anyone here recommend a good motherboard which supports both these, and works well with XP? (especially ACPI/Hibernate etc). Bye, R

Hello Eddie: Well that has me stumped. This is a long shot and not quite related, but recently after moving some hardware around, Win2K decided to suddenly switch off my USB hub while it was in use (even between restarts). The solution was to remove the hub manually from Device Manager and then reboot. Problem fixed - maybe this *could* work for your mouse? Anyways, let me know how it goes (via email if you like), I'd be interested to hear what is causing this and how you solve it. Best Regards, R russell_wild@hotmail.com

The fact that the Mouse Properties setting changed definately sounds like a software problem to me. Some software changes the sound volume in a similar way. Rollercoaster Tycoon does something similar, it turns off the cursor shadow when it exits, and I have to re-enable via TweakUI :-( As for turning off - are you sure it's turning off and not just dimming the light (which is normal)? Hello group - Does anyone know if the above card works properly in Windows XP (or 2000) for that matter? I can't even find it on Creative's own website, but Jungle.com definately sell it. I told myself I'd never touch a Creative GFX card again because of the driver problems, but I must admit that the price of this one makes me highly tempted. I suppose I could always use the Nvidia reference drivers? Thanks, R

Hello folks: Thanks for the input. I am sure as hell going to stay away from VIA stuff! One person out of five with success is NOT good! I was looking at a couple of Asus boards yesterday, the A7A266 DDR/PC100/PC133 (ALI Magik chipset) and A7M266 DDR. Has anyone got either of those? The first one supports both SDRAM and the newer DDR modules. For some reason I just don't like the sound of that too much. Best Regards, R

Maybe if you inserted some commas (not to mention check the spelling), we'd be able to understand what you're talking about? :-) Cheers, R

I had it out with Microsoft UK a few days ago. Bottom line, don't expect our RC1 CDs until RC2 is out, possibly at the beginning of August (because they aren't going to get the CDs until the end of July). It's sh*it I know, but our crap internet providers rule out downloading it. Russell

Hello folks: I ordered my copy of the preview from Microsoft UK's website and although it showed a confirmation page, I haven't received the usual "Order Complete" email from them. Is this normal? Regards, Russell

Those who've ordered the Preview Program (esp. in the UK)

Thanks for the information fishy2k, that has put my mind at rest. I wouldn't mind if they don't decide to charge my card either, but we'll have to see LOL! With regards, R -
Dear Group: I'm thinking of getting Windows XP on the Preview Program over here in the UK, as this machine isn't needed for any serious work at the moment and so it should be safe to do so. I do not know a lot about the differences between the various XP builds. Will the preview version of XP lack any of the features I probably take for granted in 2K? I mean things which aren't implemented yet. I was told the preview release would pretty much be the final product anyway, although of course I'll be ordering the full version as soon as I can. The preview version will be useful for me to see if I need to upgrade at all - I would do this at the same time as getting the full retail version later this year. I won't disclose my machine config, but I can tell you that it is a home system linked to one other PC. Ta, R

Thanks for the information ThQ - I ordered already! I can't wait to see it in action, having spent many weeks reading the posts on this board (most of which are positive!) Regards, R

I had this problem too on another machine with 2K. Try downloading the fix, it probably will help you: http://thesims.ea.com/us/patches/sysmod....www.thesims.com Regards, Russell

Dear group: I used to backup my digital photographs by simply copying them onto a CD-RW using the DirectCD 3.01. Now I have more images though I wanted to come up with a more automatic way of doing this. I tried to set up a backup job in Windows 200 Backup (as provided with Win2K) and when I try to tell it to create the backup on drive I, which is my CD writer, it says "I:\ is not a valid drive or you do not have permission". I am an Administrator. I can also access the drive, copy/delete files, everything from Explorer. I have had to resort to having the backup created on my hard drive and then copy it across. Any thoughts? R

It does it when you have more than the same window open. Russell -
Anyone Know When WinXP RC1 Will Be Sent Out??
RussellWild replied to ShoeHornOPlenty's topic in Hardware
The beta is out right now, not sure where you got "end of May" from. Russell -
Hello: I own (legally) both Windows 2000 and Windows Me, although I only use 2000 (he he, no surprise there!). The Movie Maker in WinMe was however, quite useful for me because of the tiny files it can create. I found all the files in the cabs on the WinMe CD and copied them to my C drive in a new folder. The program runs fine but when I try to import an avi or wav into my collection I get an error saying "This file cannot be imported. Make sure that it is a valid file type and that its contents have not been corrupted." I know the files in question are OK, because I imported them perfectly under WinMe. Any tips on how I can get the thing working? I know it will be in XP but I'd like to use it now if possible!!!!! Thanks, Russell
-
I never said I have the WinXP beta, and I don't. Why can't you faggots around here just answer the damn question?

Hello all: I'm running Win2K SP 2. When I right click a shortcut there is now a "Compatibility" tab there, and I can choose either Win95, Win98 or WinNT from a drop down list, to try and get the program in question running. Where has this feature come from? Russell
-
Thanks for clearing that up. The thing is, in the few instances I have used it, it really does seem to work. And it saves from having to set individual fixes a la AppCompat.exe! Here's a picture for those who don't know what they're looking for... http://www.wildones.fsnet.co.uk/compat.jpg Regards, R

Hello - One of the users of my Win2K Pro machine has the habit of leaving the caps-lock key on when they log out. This caused problems for others who forgetfully type their whole name and password in the wrong case! Is there a way to add a script which switches the caps lock key off either for the user in question or all users? "Thankx" Russell
