Hello all: On the Documents menu in Windows Me you get, at the top, shortcuts to both My Documents and My Pictures. As I do quite a lot of work in these folders these shortcuts were very welcome (just about the only thing that was in WinMe!). Is there any way to add My Pictures to the top of the Documents menu in Win2K? Thanks, Rustieux

My Pictures folder - adding shortcut?

That isn't a bad idea actually as it also allows easy access to the subfolders within My Pictures. Thanks for the tip! Russell -
Anybody angry about SP7 for NT 4.0
RussellWild replied to pmistry's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Who gives a **** about Service Pack 7 for NT? NT is well and truly dead, I don't blame Microsoft for abandoning it. It was a pile of pants anyways. Russell -
Get the latest design from Sigma Designs' website, they work fine under Windows 2000 and therefore WinXP. I use their drivers to run my Creative DVD and MPEG card, which would otherwise be useless because Creative don't support Win2K (apart from the SBLive). Russell

Hello all: My "Thumbnail" view in Explorer has stopped working for some reason, not matter what folder I'm in. When I switch to thumbnail the thumbnails appear but on them is just an Internet Explorer (JPEG) icon. Refreshing them doesn't work either. I'd go into the registry but I really don't know what I'm looking for. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Russell

Upgrading CPU/Memory - How will this affect Win2K Pro?
RussellWild posted a topic in Customization & Tweaking
Hello all: This is just a simple issue which I'd like some advice about. Basically, the system I'm using is, in short, an Athlon 600 (Slot 1) with 128MB SDRAM. I'm thinking of doing a "bargain basement" upgrade to an Athlon 700 or 800 with 256 or 384MB SDRAM. My question is this - would it be worthwhile reinstalling Win2K Pro after I install the components? I'm not really sure whether Win2K Pro configures itself during setup depending on what CPU/Mem you have? Thanks in advance, Russell -
I always imagined the skins for XP would work the same way as the ones for Media Player, that is they will be available through WindowsUpdate or something similar. A lot have criticised MS's stance of not allowing unauthorised skins, but I have to say I don't think it's a bad idea. Wouldn't you want the skin to be properly tested before you unleash it on your system? Russell

Hello group: In some very early preparations for the upcoming Windows XP, I want to review which drivers on my current 2K system are WDM. Is there a way to do this? I looked on the driver properties in Device Manager but that didn't seem to help. Is there a fool proof way to tell whether or not the drivers are WDM via Device Manager? I just want to know so I can investigate new drivers for my devices which currently don't have WDM ones. Best Regards, Russell

Hello again: The computer which I have Win2K Pro installed on is used by just two users on a regular basis, each with their own account. When a user logs off, Windows automatically ends any dial-up connections. Is there a way to stop it doing this, so that if user1 connects and logs off, the connection would still be there when user2 logs on? Thanks, Russell

Upgrading CPU/Memory - How will this affect Win2K Pro?

Thank you both for your replies and for making my mind up for me. 384MBs here I come!!! Regards, Russell -
Well I risked it and bought the game after reading reports that said it a) Worked fine and Worked with some problems. According to the readme, the UK Edition may have sound or graphics problems when running under 2K. Luckily I don't get either of these. What I DO get though is slightly irregular (but nonetheless annoying) performance problems. Occasionally the game "hangs" for about 15 seconds accessing the hard drive. Othertimes it has these jerky fits where it keeps reading from the disk. I also occ***ionally get the message about "Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory swap file...". Any tips for giving the game maximum memory and improving its performance? Cheers, Russell Athlon 600 w/ 128MB SDRAM 40GB Hard disk 32MB GeForce 1 DDR card Soundblaster Live! Plat.

Yeah, Railroad Tycoon II used to work fine on my PC but somewhere down the line (no pun intended!) I didn't use it for a while. Now when I try to run it I get the dreaded "Not Supported On NT" message. ??? Russell

There is a patch on the WWTBAM site which I think fixes it. I installed it before trying the game, so I can't say for sure. My DVD is similar to yours though, and it runs pefect (Mine's a 6X). Hope it works out, Russell

Please help! Something has gone wrong with the networking setup in my Windows 2000 installation. Whenever I try to use applications that in some way have to use networking or dial-up services, I get various errors and other problems (even opening LAN properties causes Explorer to crash). An example is Microsoft ActiveSync 3.1 which I use with my PocketPC. When I first boot the system and go into My Computer -> Mobile Device it throws me back out saying "Critical communications services have failed to start". If I then go into Network & Dial-Up Connections and enable my network card (Netgear FA310TX), this causes a little icon to appear in the taskbar saying "Network Cable Unplugged". After that, I can get into Mobile Device fine and other apps seem to work OK again. But on rebooting it all goes back to square one. To me it sounds like some service or other which _used_ to start automatically is no longer doing so. The question is - which one and why? I hope someone here can shed some light on this. It is starting to get VERY annoying, but I can't reinstall Win2K at the moment. Thanks in advance, Russell

Anyway to get this game to run in Win2K Pro SPK1? I have an Athlon 600, 128MB RAM etc... When I run it, Windows says it's trying to access the COM ports and kills it. Can I stop it from doing that? Ta, Russell
