Let's take the things from the beggining. I suppose that you already disabled "use simple file sharing" from folder options-->view in order to work with the permissions like win2000. After you do this, go to the folder you want to do a network share and click on permissions. Type "guest" and then set the permissions you like. Have you done all this?

XP is giving already enough headache at work with the network shares and the guest account. And if you think that i'm working behind a local installed firewall you can imagine that the problem is doubled. If you don't have a lot of users on your network, then try to create user accounts on your XP machine to all the users that actually log in the other machines, leaving the password blank. Then go to the folder you want to share and give permissions to each and every user you created. Theoretically it should work on XP, since this works fine on win2k. But theory from practice in XP have a mile long distance, if you know what i mean...

I think my previous post was not much of a help since it doesn't het rid of your problem with the login screen. Give me some time to think of something else...

A quick way i can think of without bothering to map a network drive, is to create a new shotcut(e.g. on desktop, right click-->new-->shortcut and type \\computer name\folder name. That should be fine since every time you log on, it doesn't try to refresh the network share contents(pain in the neck if the other computer is off).

Having the firewall of XP enabled might cause problems like this, and unfortunatelly it's not that easy to configure properly and quickly. Try disabling it for a start and let us know if this is not the problem.

You can share a directory you want, without bothering with the guest account. Just go to sharing and then allow everyone to have access(read only is recommended of course) to that folder. If you want to give full sharing to the folder you might want to use disk quota to that folder as well, cause anyone can upload to your PC unlimited amounts of data.

Try disconnecting your PC from the cable modem and see what happens. If it works allright after that, then you might be having a program running on the background that every time you open something, it tries to send info to the net. Possibly a spyware program, and the first i suspect is Gator, made by lamers who need to be shut down forever. Check you running processes from the task manager and try to locate anything that has to do with "gain_trickler" or "CMEII" or something like that anyway.

Possible trojans as you said! It gave the same on my home network and kinda freaked out too, run "the cleaner" which found nothing wrong. I think that they actually have somewhere in their help files an explanation about this and say that there's nothing to worry about. I can't access the prog to tell you where it says it exactly since it's dead now(30 day trial is over).

I've used the trial version of advanced administrative tools. Nice and neat, it only costs $50 to register and i think it's a real bargain for what this proggie offers.

Maxtor, IBM and new Quantum drives are absolute guarantee for me. I've got 4 systems running on Maxtors and i never had any issues. New Quantums are really fast and IBM is, as always, top quality hardware.

Try tweakUI from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsme/guide/tweakui.exe. Works with win9x/ME/2k

256MB RAM and the PF at min:384 max:768. I think that it doesn't worth altering the PF in win2k, it works fine with the default system setting.

What do you mean by "default font"? Are you refering to how the fonts are displayed in the taskbar and the several open windows? If this is it, then go to your display properties-->appearance and under the "item" drop down list choose Active title bar. Once selected go and deselect Italics from the fonts section, down below. If you mean something else let us know more clearly. Take care.

I've got two networked computers with ICS enabled. One computer has the static 192.168.0.1 and the other set to auto. When i installed Norton Personal firewall, i run the network wizzard and it added the global 192.168.0.0 on the trusted computers list. The other computer is assigned by DHCP with the address 169.254.96.172, which means that it's not covered on the trusted list. I added the address myself there but still no luck(no network-no internet connection sharing). I know that Norton firewall has the file sharing on MS network disabled by default. I enabled this and still no luck. I can't see the other computer, neither the other can see mine. I am going nuts here, i've tried all the damn combos. What pisses me off is that when you have ICS enabled, the client computer HAS to have dynamic IP on. If i assign a static IP on the other computer the network works over the firewall, but ICS is not. Please help out if you have any clue because this is really driving me mad. Thanks for reading.

If you could be a bit more specific about what exactly you mean "it totally f* everything up", maybe we'll be able to help you. You mean the program crashes? It doesn't burn properly? It doesn't recognise your CD-RW properly? Help us to help you!

Hi all, i was wondering if you can set windows media player or winamp to run as a scheduled task, and autoplay as well when it starts. I want to use this as a kind of an alarm clock. I can't find a command that will autoplay the music file/CD on either programs. Is there any third party progs that do it?

Yep it works. Nice one Davros thanks for the tip.

O.K. Nvidia just updated the drivers with new kits that contain the control panel in advanced properties. Some people are really ubsent-minded these days! http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=windows2000

No tweaks at all. Only the refresh rate fix utility which shouldn't have an impact on the driver, since the registry settings are removed anyway once you uninstall the old driver. Well i assure you that other people will post here as well.Don't think it only happened to us, it's just that the drivers are 1 day old, so lots of people haven't tried them out yet. We'll see anyway.

Same problem here. Running on an Elsa Gladiac Ge-Force 2 GTS. I tried to install in any imaginable way. I cleared every single trace of the old driver in the system, but still no luck. No advanced display properties... Nice work NVidia...

People who care about security in their machines might find this page very interesting: http://grc.com/lt/scoreboard.htm Overall grc.com is one of the best security related sites i've come across. Navigate through the pages and find very good sources of info relating to internet security. Also run the tests that the guy made, they can proove rather saving for your private data. Regards,

Quote: As with everything you see and hear on the net. Take with a grain of salt. GRC.com is not the be all and end all of internet security. I never said that grc.com is be all end all. I thought that posting the specific article will help many users to have an overall idea on some things that are TESTED and not just theoretically mentioned. As an overall i found grc.com to be very mature site, runned by pros and not people that have benefits from companies. Do you actually something that is written in there is wrong? And if you do what's that? So i say it again, *overall* the site is useful.Maybe there are better sites out there that you can propose to me, no doubt. I'm not advertising anybody here... Cheers.
