O.K. now it's clearer. It seems like 95 is going nuts, not allowing you to open the network neighbourhood. Since you can ping the host from the client though, why don't you try to create a shortcut on your client machine that links directly to the host machine. For example create shortcut to: \\hostmachinename\C and then do the same for any other drives you have on the host. I know that that's not the solution you're looking for but as a temp solution is better than nothing.

XP page file: Should I set it permanently?
thymios replied to markjs's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: I haven't heard of any defraggers that can defrag the swap file in XP - 9x, yes, but not XP. That's true. While Norton speed disk defrags the pf in 9x/ME/2000 it does not on XP.Quite strange i would say, unless Symantec is going to release an update that does.Maybe it's because XP have NTFS 5.1? -
Can you be a bit more specific? What do you mean by client can't see host but it can ping it?You see the computer but cannot access the files?Does it asks you for a username/password? If this is the case, then try either enabling guest account on your XP machine(not secure though), or even better creating a user on XP with the same username that win95 machine logs on.

Is there any way to make command prompt in win2k/XP NOT exiting after executing manually a .bat or .exe file? Alternativelly is there any command that you can add to the batch or executable to prevent from exiting when run?
-
That will do.Thanks. Still though i am curious if you can prevent it anyway without having to edit it.

Thanks for replying guys. I found a temporary solution to the problem. I disabled the firewall on the server computer and then rebooted the client. It was assigned with 192.168.x.x IP and then everything worked fine. Probably for some reason norton was not allowing the other machine to get the IP from the range 192.168.x.x, doesn't really matter anymore, as long as the other computer doesn't get an out of range IP again. I'll also try to give the other computer a static IP with the method you just said Xiven. I tried it before but i only filled the gateway with the 192.168.0.1 NOT the DNS server. Once again thanks for reading and replying.

Of course it will be better. Miles better! We are talking here about three henerations of gfx cards in between GF4 and TNT2. I don't really understand though why you use a Voodoo2 for 3D since your viper is way faster than V2.

I posted on win2k section the problem, please read because it's not win2k related only, and i don't want to do cross-posting.Thanks. http://www.ntcompatible.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=20394

maxreboot nvidia drivers do NOT have fixed refresh rate!
thymios replied to oldspice's topic in Hardware
Quote: No thymios you should be putting the dame on MS after all they didn't add an oplimal refrash rate setting like what Win9x has. So no matter what nVidia or ATI or any other video manufacturers do it not going happing in tell MS fix this problem which had been around in good old of WinNT4. Min of us beta tester cry about that when testing both Win2000 and WinXP as you can it still has not been fix. I agree. Put it this way though. MS is going to turn around and say that win2k is not intended for games! S A D. -
Uh-oh. Bill in consideration would ban home-built PC's.

maxreboot nvidia drivers do NOT have fixed refresh rate!
thymios replied to oldspice's topic in Hardware
The refresh problem in win2k makes me wonder about the innability of the majority of large companies like Nvidia or ATI, making a correct working driver for this. It's quite funny don't you think?I mean they update the drivers and solve way bigger problems than this, and they choke on that? -
The program should have its folder in the Program Files(unless you installed it somewhere else). Try locating the uninstall file there. Otherwise you will have to delete it manually, and get rid of the registry entries as well. Try to find keys like "Norman" or the name of the company whichever it is. Also don't forget to go to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run registry key and delete the starup file of the program(it should have an auto-monitor for viruses app).

It takes so long to get to Computers Near Me what was that
thymios replied to Sparkhard's topic in Customization & Tweaking
It works allright. My mistake the stupid registry didn't have after all the RestoreConnection key. -
If it's a UDMA66 drive then obviously it does support DMA. Maybe the problem is on the cotroller. What motherboard are you using? I also assume that you have installed the UDMA66 cable of the HDD correctly.

What AV program are you using?

I just want users to know and be aware of this awfull program which is created by lamers that should not have anything to do with the internet. Gator installs itself without asking in many apps and progs, even games, and all it does is bring up pop-ups while you're surfing. They call it adware. All they could do is ask you if you actually want it to be installed on your computer. I call it spyware, since all it does is monitor your surfing on the internet and then pops up with "appropriate" for your needs ads. I don't want any fu**er knowing what the hell i do when i surf (pardon my language but i'm really mad right now). I say that the magic of the internet is that it's free(freenet), anyone can express their opinions(free speech). Take these two simple things out the internet is going to become a bag of $hite.

Gator (aka GAIN software) are the lamers of the internet
thymios replied to thymios's topic in Slack Space
True. But what we are talking about in here is a codec not a program, and the codec is in fact a hacked version of MS's ASF. Now you'll ask me why MS didn't make another codec supporting the features and quality of DivX? The answer is simple. DivX had lots of law related problems with movie associations. It's still considered illegal, because it can produce almost perfect copies of DVD's.Companies loose a lot of money and they try to hit DivX, but they arrive too late, since DivX is already the most popular codec on the net and people are learning to use it and encode, very fast. Now here comes the tricky part. MS and the other companies prefered to support a ready made (and definattelly succesful) codec. They obviously have to do it within law limits. So what they brought up? Digital Rights Management. The new feature of Divx Pro, which will enable movie companies to produce copy-proof DivX's. The story goes on and on, and i will have to write for about half an hour to say everything. Look aroung the internet on DivX related sites and you'll see what's going on. One thing is for sure. Free is DEAD. -

The instructions for removal of GAIN software applies to all programs that install it, not only DivX 5. Now you all know the name of the program that pissed me off last week. I am very dissapointed by the release of DivX 5 since i am a DivX fan, and i encode a lot. Gej who made the original codec (3.11) is approached now by MS and other large companies, to officially make DivX codec the most popular codec for video on demand, so i guess it was only a matter of time to get corrupted by it and start looking to get money on the side. I encore the good programming and hard work, but not the rip off. Tsonta 101 eyxaristw re file gia tin ypostiriksi. -

I found out yesterday that this lame program also dials to the internet by itself (states phone number). It's my pleasure to saw everyone here and anywhere i can post to, the solution to rip off this prog from your computer for good. This article is written by Doom9 (found it in his website). After the installation run msconfig, go to the startup options and deactivate gain_trickler_xxxx or CMEsys, then reboot. If you have no msconfig on your machine then run regedit and remove the following keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\gator.com\ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr entversion\stashedgef HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr entversion\stashedgmg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr entversion\run\trickler Then reboot. Now you can also delete c:\program files\DivX\DivX Pro Codec\gain_trickler_3102.exe That concludes the removal. The following registry key must exist or you can no longer use the codec: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{21ffb6c0-0da1-11d5-a9d5-00500413153c}\ It's unbelievable how bold these guys are. I think they crossed every line. It's completely unacceptable a program calling by itself without asking and this program being supported by quite a lot of apps. -
Damn i never thought it was so thick for crying out loud. The story goes like this.I'm trying to upgrade a friends BIOS to the latest (the motherboard is SOYO's 6VBA-133). Trying to upgrade with award flash BIOS upgrade program that SOYO has for download (award flash 816), failed a lot of times with different binary files(BIOS revisions). It was giving a message "Unknown flash type" and it was quitting. So what i tried to do is get another version of awdflash from another site(specific QDI's site, they have 723 version if i remember well). The result of my stupidity? The BIOS update reported several write fail errors during the upgrade.I restart the system and there i am with Award Bootlock 1.0. Stupidity number two:I tried to flash the old bios that i backed up for these kind of situations.I first tried to "downgrade" it using awdflash 816 which was giving me the old same problem and it was quitting before up[censored].I used again awdflash 723 to flash the old bios and after a good amount of write fails, the computer is D E A D as dead now.I mean i start it up and nothing comes up on the screen, no sounds no picture nothing. I know the answer to the next question is going to be "NO you screwed big time" but i give it a try.Is there anything i can do except clearing CMOS from the jumper(Which i already did and of course nothing changed). Damnit i am so angry with myself, i can't believe it.And the whole story was the poor machine performance and i was just trying to raise it(now i killed it for good didn't i stupid me).Brian Frank if you read this, be my angel again and give me some good news please! Take care all of you and i hope you learn from the stupidity of others like me.

Today i got back the chip from the dutchman. He did a great work, the chip is working again(he also flashed the latest BIOS version) and the motherboard is resurected! This is a very good and cheap service from the guy, and i bet he can save a lot of a$ses. Once again thanks to SneakX for providing the link (www.flashbios.org).

thymios replied to thymios's topic in Slack Space
There are lots of progs that install GAIN. Most of them they ask you first. Some don't and just go ahead and install it.I don't want to name the particular program that pissed me off here as it will be considered spamming from the guys that made it. I respect their work but not their management that's all. I already flamed them enough in their forum, so it's better to end it here. It's not only the case of being installed on its own, but the whole concept of internet privacy. Free speech is bliss for crying out loud! -
