    What's better NAV or McAffee?

The new version of norton(2002) is very improved compared to the older ones. I've tried all 3 progs(Norton, Mcaffee and AVP) and i didn't notice big differences in speed and accuracy. I've gto a couple of old CD's infected with some virus, and all 3 programs located it easily, with the default values on. AVP sometimes intercepts hoax virus, and that's the main reason than the others don't. For the record, I'm using Norton, since i am quite used to it, and configure it the way i want easily.

Problem with local ngstats in UT

I got the solution for the problem from the troubleshooting forums of www.unrealtournament.com. For people interested and for future post search all you need is to download a fix for the ngstats: zipped: ftp://ftp.infogrames.net/patches/ut/NGStatsFix.exe umod version: ftp://ftp.infogrames.net/patches/ut/NGStatsFix.umod Install it on your UT folder and BINGO!
  5. Start IE and go to Tools-->Synchronise. Then choose the web pages you want to sync and click on properties. Go to Schedule tab and choose "Sync this favorite using the following schedule", and then click on "Add.". The minimum you can change it to, is every one day.

    Best Mouses?

I vote for MS intellimouse optical too. It even works on my face!
  8. That works for win98. What about when you have the same problem in win2k?The above registry edit doesn't work.

Epson the best support i'v seen.

The fact that epson's heads are not removable is not necessarilly a disadvantage. This means quality heads since they are lifetime, but it has the drawback that if they get too old and you need to change them, you can buy a new printer with the money that they ask for replacement(but that's after 4-5 years of HEAVY use). I worked on both epson and HP printers and in general i've seen two things. Epson are excellent for colour printing and for heavy use like everyday printing. If you don't use them for a while though, the head needs cleaning which wastes a lot of ink. HP are very good for black and white printing, and you can also use it less often without having to clean the heads all the time. In a few words, both companies have their advantages/disadvantages on their products. The sure thing is that they are both leaders on the printer market.

    Windows 9x. Does it Suck?

All win9x/ME versions suck big time if you want to have a reliable and stable system. For gaming they're quite good, but yet on this task they crash often. MS move with win2k was a checkmate. The system absolutelly rocks, and i bet that XP will get as good as win2k in a little while.

    CD and DVD drives missing

I remember i had this problem when i first installed win2k on my system 2 years ago. I couldn't find a solution so i re-installed. Don't take my advice for granted of course because there might be other users here that know the problem and will give you a solution. Have you got SP2 and other updates installed?

Epson the best support i'v seen.

It's little details like this that make users happy with the service of a company. And it's really not appreciated when a large company like HP doesn't care about it.M4Carbine is right. It will only cost a rediculous amount to them to include the cable.Maybe the ordinary cable is too small for some people but the majority is happy with it. Take an example of Nokia mobiles. All the phones use the same charger!(no i don't know about the first model that the company designed, but i know for sure about the past 4-5 years of Nokia mobile history). It's a little detail that maybe is not noticed but it's highly appreciated by buyers.

    IPNATHLP crashes=no network

I have two computers connected with a peer-to-peer network. Both are running win2k SP2. I have ICS installed, one computer is running on the essential(for ICS) 192.168.0.1 IP and the other is set on automatic(dynamic). Here comes the problem: Sometimes the network crashes(i can't see one computer from the other) and obviously the ICS is gone(it usually happens when i disable the network card in the machine running the ICS). I went through the event logs to see if i can find something and i saw the following: Error: IPNATHLP Description: The DNS proxy agent encountered an error while obtaining the local list of name-resolution servers. Some DNS or WINS servers may be inaccessible to clients on the local network. The data is the error code...... I can't locate the service that crashes and brings up this error. The only solution to bring back the network alive is to restart the computer that is running the ICS. Is there any service that i can restart to avoid the restarting?IPNATHLP is a dll located on the system root directory. It seems to me as DHCP is crashing and then the computers can't see each other. I've also tried to give a static IP address to the other computer but it didn't do any good. Any suggestions are appreciated, since this problem is driving me crazy 6 months now.:(

NSA Guide to Securing IIS Updated

The point i was trying to make was not only related to IIS. I hear a lot of Linux systems saying about bad security in win2k compared to Linux. That's completely rediculus since Linux is based on a system (Unix) running way longer time than winNT(all versions), and it's obvious that security holes in NT are covered eventually, but it takes a while to get a very high security standard. Whether Linux users like it or not, Win2k is the OS that most system admins prefer for their networks, and has gained thousands of positive reviews around the whole world.Any disagreement to this? edit: I don't want to be misundersand by Linux users. It all depends on what you want to run on your server/workstation. Linux is an obvious choise for users that don't want to pay MS for lincencing computers etc. BUT: When i hear lines like "Linux is way more stable than win2k if you first disable all the GUI's and run and config everything from the command line interface" from Linux "experts"(yes a friend told me this), then i go laughing at it's face, because the guy is obviously talking nonesence. I mean if i'm running command in win2k the system will never crash in 20 centuries time, is it?!

NSA Guide to Securing IIS Updated

Is it?I thought that IIS was introduced since NT 4 was out. When was Apache out?

NSA Guide to Securing IIS Updated

Hey clutch thanks for the interesting info. IIS is starting to be a really powerfull and secure service. It's obvious that it's going to take some time, since it's a quite new service compared to competitors (like Apache)-and yes that's a hint to all Linux users!

    bios write fail

Thanks guys for the help and the links.I already send the chip for reprogramming to a Dutch guy(the link provided by SneakX). I contact him via e-mail and he said that it will be easy to do it.It's only 8 Euros(5 pounds or 7 dollars), and he sends it back to you.I'm curious to see the outcome. Will let you know when i'll get it back and test it. Once again a big thank you to all of you who replied and provided help and links for my problem.
  19. Ok now i know the power of trillian!Very nice prog. thanks for letting me know... BTW Klark, i know the option in Outlook express but the point is that it open the damn MSN messenger anyway, even if it doesn't log on to it!!!

    O M G!!!!!!!!!

Come on give the guy a break. He's probably looking to build a new house and he's looking for some extra money for it! There might be something more dissapointing and pathetic than him though. Imagine if someone makes a bid for this system!!! I wish he had his e-mail included on this post. I would really take the piss out really badly on him(like offering him my Voodoo 3 for $500). BTW Felix you never know, you might be able to cook an omelate and make mayo with it!
  21. I'm fine with MSN Messenger, although MS has added some annoying features to it since the debut of XP(like running by itself when you read your e-mail for instance, or not being able to close the program when hotmail or Outlook is open). ICQ is also ok, has nice txt messaging.

XP not seeing CDs in my CDRom drives

You should try to run your computer with only one drive installed(disconnect the DVD for example), and see what happens then. Try to isolate the problem by doing all the combos(leave DVD on CD-R off, and then CD-R on DVD off). That all depends of course if you have them installed on the same controller. A trick you can use when the system is doing this, is trying to log off and then log on again(it doesn't solve your problem but at least you don't have to reboot all the time in order to do the troubleshooting). My DVD is doing this sometimes(rarely), and usually logging off and logging on again does the trick. But if you have on every boot then it is quite anoying i guess.

Will Windows Xp Work With This Machine??

Quote: I upgraded 2 Win2k comps to XP Pro, works great, haven't had any issues. Didn't say that it isn't going to wirk or it's a bad idea. All i am saying is that clean install is far better for system speed(a bit obvious i think). Now if you have lots of programs installed and can't be asked to backup and reinstall every single program again, then obviously upgrade is the solution. Regards,
