  1. Hi, I have a wireless network set up with a linksys wrt54g router and a laptop with the intel pro/wireless 2100 3b built-in (I'm not completely sure). I have set it up with WEP and a shared key, but I am required by some people to make it use more advanced security. I need WPA with AES or at least WPA with TKIP (or anything else it works with). The Intel pro/wirless ... does not allow for AES. Even after upgrading to the PROset 7.1.0.0 drivers (which took over 2 hours since this is a noname laptop and Intel doesn't directly support it). I'm trying to get it working with WPA-PSK and TKIP. I set the router to use WPA with pre-shared key and TKIP and I tell the adapter the same thing. It does not connect . If I go to the router's advanced setup page and tell it to use "auto" for "authentication type" (even though its security page is set to pre-shared key) it will let me connect, but then I can connect with any password. If I change it back to "shared key", it won't let me in. I am running winXP pro SP1 on a no-name laptop. Any thoughts? It's my friend's laptop and I'm very close to smashing the screen due to frustration. HELP!!! PLEEEEEEAAAAASE!!! Thanks
  2. I'm pretty sure that at least some of u ppl are programmers of some sort. Does anyone know a good text editor or dev environmenr prog? The most important thing for me is color coding the text. I want something that works with (at least) html, javascript, java, c++, and css. It would be nice if the prog was freeware or shareware so i could test it before having to pay for it.

    External enclosure VS External HD

Hi, I'm beginning to run out of disk space on my laptop and am considering getting an external drive. I would still run apps off of my laptop HD, but would use the external space for keeping videos, pictures, and hopefully as cache for file-sharing, etc. Currently, if I have a file-sharing app on and I run another program, my HD is choked by the file-sharing app and my work app won't run that well. I was wondering, is an external HD practical for my uses? And is there any performance difference between an external enclosure and a normal external HD. I've been looking for reviews, . . . online but I can't find much (all I see is that USB2 is a lot slower than IDE). I have also search this forum, but can't find anything that answers my quesitons (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong =) ). I have both USB2 and Firewire (in case you were wondering). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  4. Hi, I have VPN set up on an XP pro machine. Everything works fine (although it took a loooooong time for it to get that way ). The problem is that whenever I connect to the VPN, my client machine starts using the Host's internet connection instead of its own. This is a really big pain and I can't figure out how to fix it. Any thoughts? Thanks in advanced

    Permissions problem within home network

The domain thing is the best (and only real way). The other way is to make separate user logins on the host machine (the one with the bigger HD) and have the client machines (the ones that do backup) log into different user accounts. Then you can do separate permissions for the different accounts and have access restrictions.
  6. Hi, I'm going to buy a notebook soon and, from my research, I will either buy a Dell Inspiron 5150 or 8600. The only major difference between the systems (after some customizing) will be that the 5150 will have a 2.8GHz proc and a 64MB GForce FX Go and the 6800 will have a 1.6GHz proc and a 128MB Radeon 9600 pro. While gaming is not a *MAJOR* focus for me, I am waiting to play some games that will be released soon (PoP2, Sims2, . . .) and I will be doing some 3D work (3Ds MAX, maybe Maya if I have time to learn it). I'm pretty sure the 2.8GHz does offset the better vid card, but am also worried that the slower vid card might create too big of a bottle neck to recover from. Can anyone help? Or send me to a site that has done a similar benchmark? Thanks

    File sharing through VPN

Hi, I'm trying to set up a VPN and am having some problems. I have set up the server and client and they connect fine. The problem is that neither side can see the other in the network places. They both have the same workgroup name and I've refreshed enough, but they just don't see each other. Any thoughts? The server is behind a router but has the correct port (1723) forwarded I'm not completely sure about the client (it's a friends pc for now). Does it need to forward anything (no, right?) We were both running zonealarm, but turning it off (on both sides) didn't help. Thanks in advance

    File sharing through VPN

Also, I don't really care if I have to map the folders, but I'm seeing a lot of people talking about using the lmhosts file to map the network. No one has said how this is supposed to be done, but everyone keeps saying lmhosts =). btw, why can't I edit my own posts in this forum?

    File sharing through VPN

Thanks a lot. I can transfer files now. My problem is, I also want to set up remote desktop through vpn, but the client can't seem to access the server through the vpn ip. I don't have to open a port for that since the data should go through VPN, right?

    File sharing through VPN

address by ip, what do you mean by that? Do I just use their normal internet IP? In that case, how do I know if, for example, I'm pinging them through the vpn and not just accross the net?

    Logitech keyboard & Mozilla

Have you set mozilla as your defult browser? what do you mean "If I chose a webpage and configure the key for that, it will open up in IE6"? You set one of the keys (like Webcam) to that url? If so, you could set it to mozilla.exe "<URL>" and it will work for sure.

Looking for some opinions on Video Cards

TomsHardware just did a long review (you can just read the conclusions). I trust them =) http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030714/index.html
  17. Hi, Is there a way to program it to work with other programs? I would REALLY like it to work with winamp, . . .. Any thoughts?
  18. Hi, I just got a new pc and want to create a home network. I would like to do wired networking, but there isn't enough room to pass the wires throgh. I'm thinking of creating a wireless network, but can't find anything that's that good (I've been looking mainly at linksys). Here are my problems: 1) I would like to get an 11g router, but I'm affraid of interfierence. I only have one phone that's on the 2.4Ghz frequency. Anyone know how much it would effect my network (one pc will be in the same room as the phone). 2) Since I'm scared of interfierence, I'm thinking of getting an AG router, but I've read that there aren't too many around and the ones that are (the linksys) kinda suck. Any help/comment would be appreciated Hawk

I'm building a new pc. What do you think?

jmmijo: > You'll not find this board in any other config, i.e., without sound onboard. That kinda sux =( > you should do the dual channel mode option you're right, I don't know why I didn't at the start > Also I would change my sound card to the Audigy 2 Platinum unless you're getting a killer deal on the Audigy 1 Platinum. Mainly this is due to the fact that the Audigy 2 has, finally, full 24-bit support. This means both for playback and recording The Audigy 2 Platinum will cost me $74 CDN extra, and I'm not sure if it's worth it. I'm getting the card mainly for it's playback quality and the fact that it has a remote. Will I ever use the 24-bit recording if I'm not doing any high-end editing? btw, since you seem to know your sound systems, what do u think of the Creative MegaWorks 510D 5.1 500W? It's frequency response (32Hz - 18kHz) is a bit worse than the Creative MegaWorks 550 THX 5.1 (25Hz - 20kHz), but I have no idea how my ear will respond to that and the MegaWorks will cost $50 extra. > If so you may want to consider one of the Quadro boards or a Fire GL perhaps. From what I've seen getting a mid-range card and upgrading regularly (well, relatively) comes out to be a lot cheaper than buying a high-end card, so . . . Thanks a lot for the info.
  21. I'm going to build a new pc soon, and I want it to be quiet. I'm thinking of getting a water cooling system, but everything I've found on the net requires a lot of work and is huge. Do you guys know any good (something that works and doesn't take too much space) water cooling systems? PS I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this. Tell me if you don't think it is
  22. Hi, After a LOT of research, I've decided against water-cooling (it's just a big pain in the @$$ right now). I was wondering how I could make an Athlon CPU quiet without it constantly overheating, or me underclocking it.
  23. Hi, I've been wanting to build a new pc for about six months now. The reason I've waited so long is that I've heard really great things about the Athlon 2700 and 2800 and have been waiting for them to become availible (and hopefully get a bit cheaper). The thing is that the 2800 is not even availible yet (in Canada anyways) and the 2700 is still top of the line (in both power and price). Should I keep waiting or just build 2400 system and get it over with? Note: I don't need the processor to be dirt cheap when I buy it, I just don't want to pay $150 for 300 extra MHz. Thanks

Building a new PC: AMD athlon 2700 and 2800

Immortal: I'm not planning on overclocking (I want to keep this pc as quite as possible) sapiens74: U bet ur @$$ =) The thing is, I've read some great things about the Athlon 2700 and 2800 (the increased FSB speed) and am wondering if it is worth it for me to wait for it.
  25. Is there a way to recover data from a hard drive burnt out (trust me, it is BURNT OUT) due to a power surge in the power supply without spending $800? I know that the chips on the HD are fried. I've checked with a few companies and they say that it will cost about 800 USD. I have also heard people say that they have had the same problem but have recovered data for about $50. From what I understand, the magnetic disks in my HD are fine and just have to be placed in another hard drive with the same number of cylinders, . . .. I also know that the companies I talked to do that in air tight rooms with special equipment, . . .. Considering the fact that my HD is a rather popular model (Maxtor 30GB, 7200 rpm), aren't there any people that could simply stick my magnetic disks in another maxtor HD? Anyone had this done? can anyone save my data AND my wallet? thanks in advance
