Audigy Platinum EX or Game Theater XP in WinXP?
Son_Gohan replied to INFERNO2000's topic in Hardware
People buy soundcards from a company wirth such a bad technical support (liveware 4 anyone?). Besides, Audidy is not even a TRUE 24 bit/96 khz soundcard. Add terratec ewx to your list. -
and don't feel bad about it. My connections is not really fast (56K). Cable isn't available in my town yet, and ADSL is kinda expensive ( € 35 + VAT). If I want to support a website, i can just click on the banner. But generally, I don't pay attention to what online ad's say. It is also sad that while GOOD websites (such as ntcompatible, the gia...) depend on banners, other pretend us to watch their banners AND pay for premmium content. I think ad-blocking software is just a personal choice. If I had broadband access, I wouldn't care waiting some seconds. But with my current settins, I NEED this tool. Web browsing is about 30 % faster now with ad's off. PS: It would be inmoral to "turn off automatically load images", wouldn't it?

1. WPA 2. I want to upgrade my system to better specs (a k6-2 @350 with only 128 isn't just the right thing to use with XP ) 3. I want all my PC components XP ready when it ships. This includes a future purchase of a terratec EWX 24/96 4. Pricing. I still don't know how much will cost me a winxp full licence (in €). 5. I also happen to like Win2k now

I'm thinking about upgrading my 2 year old sblive value with a better card. I am slightly audiophile , as I don't play many games, don't use EAX, A3d, and just listen to mp3, cd.... I have seen a relatively cheap 24 bit soundcard: Terratec audiosystem EWX 24/96. It costs € 180 (without VAT). Since I don't want all the typical stuff a "gamer" card has (Game Theater XP, for instance): 1)I s it worth the buy? 2)should I wait for audigy's releasy in Europe? I've heard sb audigy is not really a 24 bit soundcard 8) . Is that true? 3) Is there really any audible difference between the XP (20 bit/48hz and the EWX 24/96 (24 bit/96 khz)? PS: I had a bad experience the last time I bought a terratec soundcard (DMX fire 1024). Any known bugs in win2k/winxp?

Quote: However, for those that do, they will find that more RAM will be a necessity for practical use. RAM is about the cheapest upgrade you can do to improve speed, and may be the best. At least with Win2k, getting more RAM did much more than a faster CPU. Hey! How about expending one of these in 1GB of DDR-RAM? (50 €x4=200 € ($184 ) We're certainly going to need a lot of ram for running winxp at decent speed.

Windows NT/2000/XP emulate a whole windows 3.x system in order to run win16 (16 bit) aplicatons. I beleive that technique is called "Windows on windows" or WOW. Now, WOWexec is the executable that starts a win16 subsystem and then runs the win16 aplication on it. It is done this way, so that a crash in a win16 memspace doesn't crash the whole OS memspace. Try to run SFC.exe /scannow and let it restore all system files.

I'm unable to write at a speed higher than 12x. 16x usually ends up in buffer underrun message. No fixes such as "enable DMA", "close ALL programs" or "reinstall Win2k "helped. I have 128 MB of RAM.

Better find some VB version code. Porting from one language to another is not an easy task, and cannot be always done. for example: ------------------------------------------ #include <stdio.h> void main(void){ prinft ("Only 6 months for the euro\n"): } ---------------------------------------------- BASIC code 10 print ("HELLO. Who cares about the euro") ----------------------------------------------- Visual Basic (assuming you have a form with a "Main" button private sub onclick() Main.caption="the euro Msgbox("I do care about the single currency") ------------------------------------------------------------ but what if...? double getdata(double *x, double *y){ double FromBanderas; FromBanderas=CallSomeTrickyFunction(); return FromBanderas; } nahh! forget it. It is a pain to port from C to basic. Better find some VB code, or learn C/C++ as I did :-) PS: please...NO COMMENTS on my code. I know these two pointers aren't needed, but hey, it's just some pointless code anyway...

I'm planning to buy one, and connect it to a Playworks DTT3500 speaker set. How good does it perform under Win2k/WInxp?
-
They do...but only in leaked drivers. TNT is not certified with 12.41 drivers (but TNT2 Pro is)

TFT are good if you intend to use always the same resolution (1280x1024 for instance). But lower resolutions just won't look fine, unlike CRT monitors. Video quality (DVD films) seems better to me , but again, that depends on the model. PS: Actually, I find TFT overpriced , and I won't be buying one until two or three years....because I prefer expending € 700 in a good 19 inch CRT than € 1200 for a 17 inch TFT.

You can avoid installing liveware and try the newest sblive available at come.to/sblive

Quote: Quote: $1.79? Lucky ba5tard.. Around here, it's around $2.50.. .79? Lucky ba5tard.. Around here, it's around .50.. European Union price: 1litre = 1,05€ 1€=0.85$ We have to pay petrol in $, and few countries accept payments in euros. So it is indeed far more expensive here than in the US.

www.soundblaster.com default windows 2000 drivers don't have 4.1 output. Liveware 3.0 for windows 2000 do. ALso, download directx 8.0, which enabled Directsound 3d hardware acceleration. (with DX7 for win2k it is disabled)

Either: Go for a Sound Blaster Surround 5.1 http://www.europe.creative.com/products/product.asp? lang=1&cate=2&prod=158 (Sound Blaster live 5.1 + Dolby Digital DTT2200 speakers) for EMU EUR: € 265 Or a guillemot/herculesmaxi gamesurrounnd fortissimo II sound card http://europe.hercules.com/products/gf2/features_gf2.php for €66 aprox. And buy a FPS1500 4.1 speaker set (+ € 95). PS: 1.00 euro= 1.33568 Canadian dollars

Don't spect ADSL to magically spread across Europe with these high prices (€ 40/month + VAT + € 100 instalation + € 150 modem. Spain, France, Germany, Italy... also have low ADSL coverage. Less than 5 % users have a broadband connection to the net. And Europe is not expected to have HALF of Internet connections bia broadband access till 2005. Britain is more likely to join the single currency (which I feel won't happen for a LOOOOONGGG TIME) than having massive ADSL access in the future.

NO matter how many IE builds you install, or DirectX betas. If nvidia hasn't enabled hardware stretch interpolation in their drivers yet, this problem won't go away.

http://www.tweak3d.net/faq/#sw:drv:2dspraa ====================================================================== Q. What is the status of 2D stretched sprite smoothing in the latest drivers? Q. What is the status of auto mip-mapping in the latest drivers? Q. Can I force a 16-bit z-buffer in the latest drivers? They are all currently disabled, although there may be drivers released later that will support them. In the case of 2D stretched sprite smoothing, this appears to have been disabled since the 5.xx drivers. You can see the effects of this in games like G-Police (beacons) and some SNES emulators. ========================================================================= This also happens in older cards (TNT series). Crapier cards, such as sis models, can do hardware stretch interpolation in their W2k drivers. You'll hape to cope with this "FPS drop when resizing windows in 2D games" until nvidia realizes 2D is also important.
