Security and the internet... the alarming truth!
Mr.Guvernment replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Security
Quote: You've obviously not worked in an automotive environment, as many (almost all) mechanics would cringe at reading your car statement. Did you know that many of the cars towed behind RVs have very short transmission lives? This is because the tranny fluid pump is normally turned off of the input shaft, which is driven by the engine. However, when a RWD car/truck is towed the engine isn't running but the tailshaft *is* turning, and thus so is the transmission (via the rear axle, differential, and then the driveshaft). People are always doing stupid things with their cars, like overloading them, running them low on oil, driving them even the brake linings are gone and it's just bare metal scraping. To these people, the PC ranks even lower than the car because the PC doesn't (normally) take them to work or make them any money (unless telecommuting of course), and is just another appliance. i will agree, as this applies to any situation which involves something being purchased by a human. Myself, i learn all i can about something before i buy it, or do anything, my main point.....i think....., is far too many people do not bother to do their reasearch on items, and then get in a hissy fit when it does not work and will not take the blame them selves because they were too lazy or stupid to do some background work and learn about the said item before hand nor will they learn how to fix the item them selves, when often it only takes a few minutes of listening. -

Easiest way to block a computer on network from shared drive

is there a way to do it without having to buy somewhat expensive software? -
i already got a 4x which does 4.7g in 15 mins! By Martyn Williams December 26, 2002 12:57 am PT MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC CORP. has developed a more powerful semiconductor laser that should pave the way for 16X DVD writers to be commercially available from 2004. The new laser is able to deliver pulses of light at a power of 200 milliwatts, which is double that of lasers used in today's 4X DVD writer drives, the Tokyo company said this week. Each bump in the speed of optical drives means the laser, which is used to create the light beam that burns data into the disc, has to be made more powerful. When DVD writers first came out, they required 50 milliwatt lasers. The jump to 2X speeds required a 70 milliwatt laser and, beyond today's 4X drives, the next generation of 8X drives will need a 140 milliwatt laser. Such products are already well on the way to being commercialized. For users, the eventual arrival of 16X drives will bring big benefits. At that speed drives will be capable of writing data at 176M bps (bits per second) which means a complete 4.7G byte DVD disc can be written in three and a half minutes, according to Mitsubishi. That compares with around 14 minutes for today's fastest 4X drives and almost an hour for a first generation drive. Samples of the new laser will be available from June 2003. With the introduction of the new laser, Mitsubishi says it expects its monthly laser production to increase from the current 1 million to 1.5 million during 2003 and reach 2 million units in 2004. Security and the internet... the alarming truth!
Mr.Guvernment replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Security
Thing is TOO many people p[ut valuable information on their computer because they are not aware of what could go wrong and do not bother to research about it, because they assume to dam much. When you go buy a car - u research it, what it can do, what might be wrong with it, what could happen if something happens. PC user don't - big diff there. then of course when something bad happenes to them they blame the first tech support person they can find ebcause they did not want to take on the task of learning the basics, and yes, these are the basics! of computers. -
Clutch - have any good sources for setting up a WINS server on window sor linux.
-
simply install the games u want to run, and start them up. UT u can run as a"dedicated" server and it sits in your system tray, other games u have to be IN the game to run the server so u would be using more system resources. i know UT and Quake have "dedicated" servers u can run.

save up and get a 9700 or the 9500.

Quote: Code: SilveradoIf you look in my profile you will see my 3dmark, i aint saying anything bad but i aint impressed with that score for a 9700 radeon on your system. RAM and processor give next nothing for 3dmarks, especially with a radeon being so much higher clock rates than the Ti4600 (mine is at stock speeds) i would of expected much higher than what i have. How do you figure that a Radeon 9700 is clocked "so much higher than the Ti4600"?. Here are the numbers: Radeon 9700 Pro: GPU clock- 325Mhz Memory clock- 620 Mhz GeForce Ti4600: GPU clock- 300Mhz Memory clock- 650Mhz 25Mhz is not "so much higher in my book". The memory is clocked 30 Mhz higher on your Ti4600 also. It's not the clock speed of the GPU or the memory that make this card stand out....it's the technology behind it. The 9700 has double the memory bandwidth that the TI 4600 has - THAT is where it gets alot of speed! the TI has like 10.4gb/sec, the ati has about 19 gb per /sec i think it is. and as for the higher scores - your cpu and memory have ALOT to do with it, don't think your gpu is taking all the heat for 3dmark - also, 3d mark is not a real world test, so don't hink tcause u don't got a higher score that your system is not better. i got both a ti 4600 and a ati 9700 - i should run some tests of my own. But of couse the obvious - the 9700 is newer so it is faster, and when the fx comes out, it will be faster, and then when ATi pops out it's new card, it will be faster and so on, and so on etc etc.

Quote: Well, the AVI codecs are standard with Microsloth's Media Player and that is installed (and upgraded) so that's not really the issue. sww Actually, the AVi's i get media player will not play until i put in other codecs. but others wise, i am really not sure on this one. usually if there are no codecs it will only play sound and not video. weird, vewy vewy weird!

Great software technology combined with Intel new CPU stuff!
Mr.Guvernment posted a topic in Software
is all good and stuff - but it is still physically 1 cpu - and as someone else said when u are cranking that cpu at like %90 - hyperthreading ain't gonna do jack for yeah - also other reviews have show that hyperthreading may actually slow down other applications. Nor will people who do the basic computer tasks notice any diff. this hyperthreadung is almost directed at a defiened group of computer users. i think alot of it is also "hype". -
