    Norton Internet Security on crack?

Quote: Anything serious or just script kiddies port scanning? it is just script kiddies, trust me, back home when i was on cable i had well over 100+ attempts a day. As well, "rogers" had a "legal" trojan scanner scanning their networks for trojans, and they kept nailing me, so i called and complained, and it stopped, - as it was causing my internet connection to drop for hours on end they were hitt'n me so often. it is norton, as it is super sensitive to any "port" scan, i could sit here and do a scan on your IP right now and norton would go nuts. not worries, just norton doing it's job.

    Detonator Issues

If formating is an option, do it, and put in your vid card drivers first formating eliminates alot of posible problems.

    Detonator 3.0.8.7 causes freqent crashes

try an 28.*** driver. i had some what the same prob, on 2 diff, mobo's, alwasy said the nvdis something .dll in the blue screen, so i went back to a 28.* driver and never had the problem again. but also recently i formated my comp, and put back in the 30.87's and it has not crashed.

    video card advice

well are your games lagging now? of not don't worry about it. a 64mb card can still do a good job. Also, if you can wait till Jan of next year, there will be a few new cards likely coming out before X-mas which will drop the price of all the 128mb cards now to an affordable price ($100 - $200 range) (the GOOD 128mb cards) So if you can wait, wait,

    Messed up CD-ROM drive

^^^^ was aboutt o say, often in XP when u burn a cd and it fails, XP thinks the drive is in use (thx ATAPI!) and it won't open the drive until you reboot. Does this only happen with certain cd's? or even with no cd's left in it it happens?

#1 Security rule: TURN IT OFF!

    Setup a secure gateway.

Quote: There is also always the route of setting up a Dual NIC Linux box and using its NetConfig tool (easy to use) to make a homemade NAT "firewalling" hardware based router too. Hey m8, can u point me in the direction to some reading and learning on this? I will soon be the sys admin for a breif while for my company, and want to set up a secure office network, and will be using 1 box as the gateway / inet sharing We will haev a cisco router - but got alot to learn about it, so wanted other options to assure a VERY VERY tight set up....
  12. Hey all Backing things up has become something i will begin doing here @ our work. I tried the windows back up system, but, it just don't run or work.. and i would like something a little more "powerful" Was curious what suggstions you may have, something for a small sized buisness, that can back up maybe, 3 or 4 -= possibly 6 computers a day automatically to a main server or even backup, then automatically burn the information to a medium...?

    Avatars

Quote: Theres also the space it would need, aditional bandwidth for the images etc.... Also this site isnt run automtically, all the news is added by good old Phillip. u can solve that issue by not allowing custom uploads, and only links, which means u got to host it. but it also get into as mentioned the loading speed of the page, now the majority here are likely on high speed, and would not notiev, but the 56kr's (like me @ home) would, but then again i post on alot of forums with like 40 - 80Kb sigs on em.

    Best Nvidia Drivers???

i got the same vid card as you @ work. (see the PIII 933 specs) i have used alot of drivers and have not noticed any gain with any of them, as the card itself is fairly old, and most new dets. are made for the newer cards to be really effective. I don't think it will matter much for your card at all.

    Upgrading Compaq Presaro 5630

thing is compaq often has custom made mobo's from intel and such, there fore the only bios updates you can get are from compaq. When i first got my vaio (sony) luckily they used an asus board, once i flashed the bios, i had all the options back, where as sony had a special one in where u could not change anythign!. u may be stuck with that mobo - is it possible to maybe buy a new mobo?

    win2k jumps!

Quote: I would try a video card from a company that doesn't have a 7 + year track record of completely horid drivers. Matrox and NVidia make quality cards. -Christian i hate reading this, just considering i have had a few ATI cards, never had any problems, O/S 's ranging from 98 - XP and not ONCE had a performce issue, bad dirver issue, NADDA! - as well my uncles lives by ATI - again, no issue since his first p 233. really makes we wonder.....

Best 3rd party back up software for a small buisness ?

Quote: You can't go wrong with Veritas (the NTBackup is actually a stripped down Backup Exec). Go with Backup Exec. i tried the built in backup in Xp, got it set up to run at a certain time everyday, and back the files up to a network drive (which is always availible) but it doesn't do anything... nadda.. no back up. i even set it to a time, sat there when it was supposed to run, and it didn't do anything........? was i missing something.. i will check out veritas.

Old liveware news. I need some info.

Quote: Some drivers at this site, old & new: http://alive.singnet.com.sg/drivers/ I recommend the current windows update drivers. Seem the best now, IMO. he wants the full package, that has the bar across the top of your screen. It seems u can only get the play senter and a few other things, but not the full package. u may be able to order from soudn blaster, but of course U have to pay for th shipping, liek WTF! is that. i just spent $200+ on your product and u want me to PAY! to send me drivers, if i lose mine or something..lol

    CD Burning Software Question

^^^^^ hehe, that is only 3 m8 Welll, ezcd - not stabe, i mean they release a version that would kill your comp and look how long it took to address it? - to me that is BS and all they wanted was your money. I now use nero for cd-2-cd, images bin/cue, anything. And look how often Nero has updates and such, cause they want to be stable. Basically nero is now my app, as well sometimes cdrwin. CloneCd - i don't make copies of protected cd's and the ones i do got, i have been able to use Nero to copy.. Use Lame as your ripper / encoder, from what i have *heard* (from dj's mainly) it is the best. period.
