XP pro and Epox 8K7A: Should I install the Via 4 in 1's?
Ralf Hutter replied to pr-man's topic in Software
I have the same mobo as you and I never install the Via drivers. XP already has 'em and they work fine, NEVER any issues. I've heard they're 4.24s, but can't confirm it through Device Manager. -
That's fine and dandy if all you want to do is stop inbound stuff, but if you want to stop outbound (read: trojans) you need something like Zone Alarm. FWIW, I've had trouble with ZA and XP but there's an update (2.6.362) out that is working mostly OK for me. I still get an error message in event viewer but ZA is functioning like it should. Tested with "Leak test" for outbound, stuck my head out from behind my router and tested ports with DSL Reports security test, and HackerWacker.

I've been running Win2000 NTFS on 3 different laptops for the last year and 3/4s and I've had no trouble with any of the mp3 players I've used. My regular player is MusicMatch but I also use Winamp with some degree of regularity. I've experiemented with several others as well and they've all worked perfect.

On Epox 8K7A, anyone know how to get rid of the feedbck of t

Disable the onboard sound in the BIOS and get a PCI soundcard. It will sound better anyway. -
Have you checked your BIOS or your controller card's settings? I have this exact same CDrom dive (but no Controller card) set as secondary master on an EPoX board and it (DMA setting) works fine under Win XP and Win2000.

Isn't there a way to do this by maximizing the window and then holding down the <shift> key while closing the window? I always do the "rightclick>properties>open maximized" thingy myself. Works fine for me.

This is what I've been using to add an ASPI layer to my Win2000 installs for the past year and a half. I've also been using it for XP for the last 4 months. It has worked perfect every time. Other people are using something called "ForceASPI" but I've never had to. I believe in doing things the easy way. I'd only "force" it if the easier way wouldn't work!

Any Good Cloning/Image Software ?
Ralf Hutter replied to reversing_drive's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Nah- for "borking", substitute "messing", "phucking" etc. That's what it means. -
Any Good Cloning/Image Software ?

I do exactly what Dirty Harry does except I keep my HDD's in removable mobile racks and swap back and forth instead of dual-booting. Drive Image is 'da bomb. I can do all kinds of messing around with my OSes witho absolutely no worries about borking anything up. If I do, I just reimage my drive and in about 6 or 7 minutes I'm ready to go again with a fresh install. -
I'd have to agree with Bladerunner on this- this ACPI/BIOS error will not harm your IBM (or other) drive. I'm running a Tbird 1.4 with an EPoX 8K7A motherboard and was getting this message since about July (using rc-1) all the way up to 10-12-01 (using RTM) when EPoX released a new BIOS for my board. The new BIOS fixed this error. I have 2 IBM 60GXP's in my box and neither has had any trouble at all during this time. Over 3 months of use with this error condition and no problems at all from my HDD's.

Can I use RegClean 4.1a under Win XP Professional?
Ralf Hutter replied to Silencer's topic in Software
I've been using it for 2 months now, works perfect. -
Nero 5.5.5.1 works always works fine for me. I've installed it on different WinXP's 5 or 6 times so far. I always install an ASPI layer first. I don't know if this makes any difference or not.

No Need- my guess is that the IEredicator installer was refering to the fact that M$ has made it very difficult to turn off Windows File Protection so that IErad can "do it's thing". WFP will over-write or replace any system files that are modified by another program so you have to turn it off because IErad get's rid of lots of crap. You have to do a little reg hacking so that WFP can be turned off with sp2. If you want info on how to do this, let me know. M4 Carbine-For me it's not a question of "being broke", it's a question of not wanting to use a bloated, buggy browser that is force fed to me by M$. If I want to use IE, I'll download it (60+ megs I hear) and use it. I don't need it to be integrated into the OS. I'm capable of installing a browser myself. I used IEradicater to get rid of IE on my Win2000 sp2 install. I saved over 50megs on my hard drive and almost 10 megs of RAM (without IE even running. Why would, or should, a browser use 10 megs of RAM when it's not even running?).

Can anyone give the directions for editing the correct file so WinXP setup doesn't ask for the serial number? I did this to my Win2000 slipstreamed sp2 CDrom that I made, it's one less thing to hassle with during the install. I've looked around for details on this for XP but haven't found any info and this is the first time I've even seen the topic brought up. Thanks...
