Cannot Install XP, why? (boot error)

Really? Mabye its because you're using RAID, i'm just using the raid controller like another IDE Controller.. looks like an issue Microsoft needs to fix Also i'm using 4k clusters on my boot drive with no problems (60 gig NTFS on the HPT370) Right now i'm pretty unhappy with drivers for the VIA ide controller (686B southbridge) Microsofts will not support DMA with my plextor CD writer (which makes burning CDs a chore and a slow reader) With VIA's 2k drivers my DVD rom seems to be limited to 16.6 m/b transfer even though it's listed as using UDMA 2 in device manager AND I cannot play DVDs, the only way to get video is to load the .vob files manually in powerDVD, but i get an error/lockup if i just try to 'play the dvd' So i will use microsofts for now, hopefully VIA will release XP drivers soon.

Cannot Install XP, why? (boot error)

Yes, winxp would not install (boot) off a HD installed in the main IDE controller on my board (Epox 8k7a+)(AMD761+ViA-686B) but it installs fine and runs fine if i boot off of and use the HPT370 raid controller (though xp's drivers for this suck, i highly reccomend using highpoints most recent WIN2k drivers once XP is installed.) an an Epox 8k7a (w/o the raid card) xp will install fine. odd.
  3. Ive installed 95,98,2000 probably 100's of times, but i cannot solve this problem with XP. IT installed fine for me on a couple of friends system (they're using basically the same system as me) There are two problems i'm having that i think are related. I bought a new HD, so I went into disk managment in win2k and created a 60gb NTFS partition. did a full format. tested out OK. I shut down the system and disconnected all my hard disks except my new drive, the 60gb. I boot off of my WINXP CD (this is just like w2k) and i get to the menu where you choose which partition to install WINXP and my drive is shown as 60gb partition and "UNKNOWN" file system!! (but i had just formatted it with NTFS and it was FINE!) SO i decide to let winxp setup delete the partiton and reformat it again with NTFS, seems to work out OK. after the copying files process winxp setup reboots the machine and i get the WINXP startup screen, and after about 7 seconds into starting up i get a black/blue screen with the error "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" ive re-installed multiple times now and always the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas? thanks.
  4. Well, that did it! Thank you Wolf87, I have a feeling that was better tech support than I would have ever gotten from MS directly. After removing the LowerFilter Key and renaming AFS2k.sys I rebooted and my drives were back. Turns out AFS is Audio File System,a proggie that makes it so you can insert an audio CD into the plextor drive and the tracks are read as .wav files by the OS When i re-installed my plextor software the LowerFilter key was put back, but this time only with the value "AFS2K" without all the switches. I wonder if PowerDVD added them, and they were invalid commands for the AFS2K.sys file(just speculating) thx again!
  5. "UpperFilters"= Cdralw2k "LowerFilters"= AFS2K PFC _2K _2K The only conflict that it shows i have is with my ethernet controller and my USB controller (IRQ 11) Both my drives appear in Physical Locations under removable storage, but they have a red "X" on the left side of them. But there isnt a mention of a problem there. I booted off my win2k CD and replaced the cdrom.sys file with EXPAND, didnt help anything. "Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device" Can that be any more vague?? argh!

    Nividia nForce... will you buy??

Right now its for T-bird/Palimino only... and it works with current pc2100 ddr strips you just need two sticks of memory for the dual-channel.
  7. yes.. I have un-installed and installed Powerdvd and the drives several times now. anyone have any ideas ?

Jedi Knight/Mysteries of the Sith problems

If i remember correctly i couldnt get MOTS to work in win2k, but JK ran fine (aside from one very odd glitch) this is using win2k SP2, Directx 8.0a

    Nividia nForce... will you buy??

I think this board/chipset will be the board FOR gamers. It offers dual-channel DDR, if you drop in a Geforce 3 card thats 4.2 gb/sec of bandwith dedicated to the system compared to athlons current best of 2.1 gb/sec. this is in addition to the supposivly AWESOME integrated sound, LAN and all kinds of chipset optimizations (level 3 cache, hardware prefetching)
  10. After installing PowerDVD, it forced me to reboot my machine, when win2k reloaded my D: and E: are gone from My Computer! (a Pioneer 116 DVD-ROM and a Plextor 12x10x32) In device manager they are there with a yellow ! mark with the message: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" Ive tried everything i can think of to get them back.. reinstalling the drivers for the drives, reinstalling drivers for the IDE controller, but nothing works. They are detected by plug and play everytime i remove them but all i get is error code 31!! please, I do not want to re-install win2k AGAIN! .

Win2k and general game performance question

Quote: <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by ThC 129: As for will they be faster than on 9x, well it depends on hardware and stuff generally a well tweaked NT 5 or NT 5.1 (whistler) box will run games faster than 9x will anyway and if it doesnt the difference is usually negligable for the stability and security you get from NT. </font> Am i doing somthing wrong then? because all d3d games run significantly slower on win2k then they do on win98. in Giants its the difference between 18/31 fps, and 25/50+fps while Ogl games do run fine. system is a p3-900 with 192 MB sdram and geforce2 GTS card, using win2k SP1 with game compat update, as well as all updated drivers(6.67 detonator), and disabled servies to the gaming/internet minimum

    Giants Preformance through Win2k

There is obviously somthing wrong with Direct3D in windows 2000, all D3D games run (very) badly in win2k, but OpenGL games run just as fast or faster....( which sucks because i love win2k) Giants in particualr runs almost half as well in win2k as it does in win98... Jdulmage, load up the hunger in codpeice hills level in giants, and step through the arch and look at the town, what FPS do you get (in win2k) looking at the town? i get about 18 FPS (in 640x480x32 or 1024x768x32, both are very slow) while i get 31+ FPS in windows98 Im running the Detonator 6.67 Drivers in Windows2000, and 6.49 in Win98 system specs: P-III 900 192 mb sdram Geforce 2 GTS 32mb is it possible im doing somthing wrong? either i have somthing set wrong, or there is somthing VERY wrong with d3d in win2k Quote: <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by jdulmage: you should NEVER be getting that low of FPS with Windows 2000 with a system like that one you have. I mean, i'm getting like 40 to 50 FPS at 1024x768x16 with an original RivaTNT PCI Video card. Tried DX8?? have all of the latest Windows Update patches?? What games?? Tried running 3DMark 2000 to see what it has to say?? [ January 04, 2001: Message edited by: jdulmage ]</font>
