Getting this dialog box asking to scan and clean my PC

Phalanx-Imawano, When you get the pop-up, try right-clicking and selecting View Source, sometimes you can get an idea of what/when/where/why and even who wrote it.

    Problem w/Thinkpad

el_vago32, You need to ge the Hardware Maintenance manual from IBMs FTP site: Pick Your ThinkPad 600 Model and Type Once you've select your Model and Type, you will be taken to "your" support page, from their select Online Publications from View by document type drop down list, there you will find the Hardare Maintenace manual, it is a PDF file, at the end of this will be the BIOS Error Codes. Since your on the IBM website you might want to visit the ThinkPad Driver Matrix for the 600: TP 600 - Software and Device Driver
  3. Quote: How would one go about setting up a financial application to all files including temp to the floppy, and send absolutely none to the HD?. Since this question is in the Application (XP) I've assumed your PC has USB ports, if so, then you could use a USB key, they can hold from 8MB to 1Gb or data.

    Can't access Add/remove program

ThC 129, You might want to try running SFC, the most common error numbers are usually 410 (running SFC) and 472 (you're buggering around with XPs Visual Styles). I've not seen a 432 before.

Building a quiet PC (Athlon 2500+ based)

Quote: Hi, After a LOT of research, I've decided against water-cooling (it's just a big pain in the @$$ right now). I was wondering how I could make an Athlon CPU quiet without it constantly overheating, or me underclocking it. Try Quiet PC or the Hush Mini-ITX
  7. Or even better, change "explorer.exe" to "progman.exe"!

    Manipulating registry files

So now you know where the files are, just copy them to a working XP installation. Obviously don't copy then to C:\Windows\Systm32\Config, but to another directory. Start regedit and load the "hives", edit them, and then copy them back to the non-working XP.

    DosFreak, The following is wrong: >> cdrom_sp.tst (cdrom_sp.tst=SP1 cdrom_sp.tst=SP2 cdrom_sp3.tst=SP3) it should be: cdrom_sp.tst -> SP1 cdromsp2.tst -> SP2 cdromsp3.txt -> SP3

$IPC what is it and do i need it?

Curley_Boy, $IPC is InterProcess Connection (or Communication, can't remember), it basically means that the box you are trying to connect to doesn't recognise you. This usually happens when a Windows 98/ME user tries to connect to an NT/2000/XP box. You can't disable it, but you have two choices, (1) Enable the Guest account (opens up the PC to everyone) or (2) Create a user account for the "guest" machine.

Run NTVDM.EXE in a separate process..?

Curley_Boy, You need to change the following registry setting to yes: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WOW] "DefaultSeparateVDM"="yes"

    File Encryption

reversing_drive, EFS is as only as good as your physical security. As Davros pointed out, the local Administrator can decrypt your files, so you could take the hard-disk out of your computer place it into another computer and have the local Administrator of that computer decrypt your files. For the home user, thats no big deal, for a business, they have to think of how to physically secure the computer.

    Win2k Pro SP2 Startup Sleep

Visceroid, You could try setting the Network Connections service to Manual, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, then open Administrative Tools, then open Services. Scroll thru the list, right-click, then select Properties and change the Startup Type. By setting it to Manual, it will only start when necessary, but in your case, it will not interfere with the startup of the computer. You may still get a "pregnant pause", but it shouldn't be 5-10 minutes.

Use cleanmgr in the taskmgr... how ?

MaxQc, You could try using WSH (Windows Script Host), this could enter the info when a specific window pops-up. I'm sorry I don't have any further info., I know it can be done. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/nhp/Default.asp?contentid=28001169 http://www.jsiinc.com/subf/tip2500/rh2532.htm There is an old (1998!) utility that you may want to check out: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treevie...ds/scriptit.asp

    what's the best ms os?

You forgot NT 3.1, NT 3.5 and NT 3.51 all of which preceeded NT 4.0. NT 3.1 is really worth mentioning, but NT 3.5/3.51 is, Ok it still had the drap Program Manager as its shell, however it was showing signs of maturing. NT 4.0 only added a new shell to 3.51, the big change came with NT 5.0 (aka Windows 2000), as mentioned earlier this added support for PnP which gave Windows 2000 a good boost, but like NT 4.0 and previous versions suffered from driver support. Now comes Windows XP (built on NT Technology), it alrea seems to be a favourite, but Windows 2000 still lurking in the background! My vote is Windows XP.

    Dialup Connection Tweaking...

Lotus, You can try changing your MTU size, but with a V.90 modem your not going to see much of a difference. There are plenty of Microsoft KB articles about the TCP/IP stack that you can check as well. There are only two tips I can think of: (1) Make sure you have a good cables between your PC -> Modem and from your Modem -> Telephone socket. (2) Tweak the following registry settings: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Serial] "ForceFifoEnable"=dword:00000001 "RxFIFO"=dword:0000000c "TxFIFO"=dword:00000010 "PermitShare"=dword:00000001 "LogFifo"=dword:00000001 (see http://www.jsiinc.com/subc/tip1300/rh1326.htm)

    BSOD "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED classpnp.sys"

rgodart, This is the general KB from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q275678 Not much help though, CLASSPNP.SYS is part of the OS. You could try re-applying the latest service pack, but my experience with STOP 0x1E messages is a clean install.
