all the above are real nice. just get a name brand /w the same interface as the rest of the system. yamaha and plextor are top of the line. i have a sony scsi2 using nero. im trying to make coasters, but havent yet. doing hd benchmarks while burning hd backups or burning cd to cd. burns a little slower but no failures yet. no hits on the benchmarks either. next im gonna try quaking while burning (all scsi)

clutch is right the ag or fd trinitron has always had it. it has to do with the way sony makes it's tubes. been like that for years. i always have sony trinitron... just switched to this monster 21 incher. (i think it's cooking my face) btw sony does make a trinitron monitor (seemless) but they arent available to joes like u and me, but if u buy a silicon graphics workstation u can get one.

i've seen quite a few posts about sharing irq's in w2k. here is a little info on it... simple explanation. devices are mapped thru other devices. for instance the microsoft usb joystick is mapped thru the agp port, the gameport on the soundcard and the midi device, if there is one. nowdays just about all devices are mapped thru another device. in older systems the thread would be created when and as needed. this could cause system crashes if a thread was created to the same device at the same time as another one. wk2 has a cool solution... permanent sharing of irq's. i have yet to setup a w2k system that had problems with the irq sharing. this system has 6 devices that share a permanent irq. IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System IRQ 9 NVIDIA GeForce DDR IRQ 9 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller IRQ 9 Adaptec AHA-2940U2/U2W PCI SCSI Controller IRQ 9 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX) IRQ 9 Creative SB Live! (WDM) and as u can see, there is the route from the usb port to the video and sound card. i really doubt a shared irq is giving anybody a problem... there is something else wrong. (thnx to gm at nasa, and jt at intel) for this explanation. btw did anybody know that intel is experimenting with a cpu that has a gpu?

in task man, try ending em_exec.exe see if that helps

flimber the first thing that comes to mind is your bios settings. some bios (most i think) have a setting to save an irq for such things as the agp and the usb port.... the bios saves a port but w2k usually ignores it, so u have a floating blank irq floating around. turn these off and let windows do all the assignments. also set the "pnp os" to yes.

a guy i know with the same card says theres a option in advanced tabs to switch

1. ntfs is more effiecient than fat32. 2. nt platform is more configurable to the software that needs to be run. (the downside is configuring is not as easy) 3. the system is lean, because it doesnt have the modules written for automatic install and system setup like home systems i hate os's that ask too many questions. 4. the HAL is a more efficient way of managing hardware than a home os. (again sometimes a pain in the butt to deal with) 5. nt systems use system memory better than home systems. making it more stable and faster. if u have the resorces i always recommend home users learn nt. 6. security. absolutely cant beat it with a home system. if u have children (i dont) they have thier own login. parents can truly lock them out of certain things, with very little chance of bypassing security. a good nt user doesnt need a port sniffer or a firewall (non server users only). filesharing can be disabled and ports can be closed. online work should be done in a user, rather than a admin mode. a virus has to be written specifically for nt to infect critical systems. 7. i hate rebooting!! i can do a powerpoint presentation, play quake for an hour, switch to combat flight sim for an hour, then let my girlfriend log on and do a spreadsheet...all with no reboots. i just turn it off at the end of the day. 98 users cant boast that. 8. speed!!! wintune tests on 98 were about 1/2 that of nt4.0 ('cept for d3d because nt4.0 is opengl only) my cached disk tests went from 190mb/s to 290. and memory from 1100 (or so) to 1300mb/s. then i put w2k on it and geez. cached disk jumped to 310+ and memory to 1660. processor speeds also jumped. what can i say... nt is a mans os

Upgrading CPU/Memory - How will this affect Win2K Pro?
lexluthor replied to RussellWild's topic in Customization & Tweaking
at 380 u will have pleanty of memory for our system unless u are running some high end programs. the only time u need a pagefile is when there is a memory overrun or a haywire app. here are my suggestions (i have 256meg) swapfile of 2x mem on seperate channel/partition from system (no recovery probs) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\disablepageingexecutive (reg_dword) =1 system.ini under [386enh] ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 (nagual) this will cause your system to run fast and clean. do the 2 hacks after the system is debugged because an abnormal system shutdown in some cases will corrupt profiles and cause loss of short term memory. -
Help!! I broke Win2K services ... now what?
lexluthor replied to Napalm's topic in Customization & Tweaking
if u feel comfortable with the registry u can do it from there HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ in each services main key there is a reg_dword that says "start" 2=automatic/started 3=manual 4=disabled hope this helps -
i just move the whole dir... the export thing is a pain. %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\<id number>\Microsoft\Outlook Express this will have your email stuff %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application data\microsoft\address book will have the (well duh!) u only need the .wab file from here the .wa~ is a backup.

too cool nagual, i forgot about that command since win95. i have both activated and this thing is quiet as a churchmouse. i have no idea whats causeing the crashes, i have no problems with winamp (using it myself) and i use norton without any probs. the only system "crashes" i get is when my girlfriend (logged under her own name) starts the print spooler before the printer initializes which makes it go haywire. when she reboots, it reboots normally but it FUBAR's her profile. outlook express to be more specific.

the only complaint i would have about win2k is the permission structure i work in user mode to limit my exposure to outside hackers and viruses. but i did run into the same type of problem in some apps/games... this was my workaround. add the primary user to the admin group. load the game logged in from the primary user, go to the directory and change ownership from administrator group to the primary user, then remove the user from the admin group. i think it's lame but thats what i did.

try turning the vert sync off no antitalias and in q3 use lightmap instead of vertex lighting u prolly already did this but set the mouse to smooth?

no matter what the cost i go with pentium all the way. compatibility, customer support. i want less troubleshooting and more playing. my brothers have had several amd chips fail. i have never had a pentium fail, and im an avid oc'er (knocking on wood)

try getting a monitor for your system and see where the voltages go i use mother board monitor 5.sunthin. also as the voltage drops but the system is trying to pull more power, that creates extra heat.

whats the pagefile min/max set to? make sure they are both set to the same setting. changing pagefile size on the fly is horridly slow. u have the same system memory i do so u can set your pagefile to cache only when nessesary HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management and set this dword to DisablePagingExecutive 1 war
-
hit the wrong key. but for safety purposes in case of a runaway program set yourself a normal pagefile of 2x the system memory got to this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management and set this dword to DisablePagingExecutive 1 this will cause the system to dump only when it's absolutely needed. i think this will give u the desired performance. warning if the system does crash u may lose some settings.

http://www.rojakpot.com/Speed_Demonz/Swapfile_Optimization/Swapfile_Optimization_01.htm go here for a well written explanation of pagefiles. the best way to accomplish what u need in w2k is to set the pagefile to the min (20 megs i think) show 20 in the max/min settings

hmmm unusual question. pci irq's should be software independant now. before the hardeware needed to be programmed for the correct irq. with pnp the os assigns irq and shared irq's. my bios allows me to assign an irq to the usb and the agp. but these are disabled since the os does the irq. there is 1 nvidia card that wants a bios assigned agp irq, but im not running it (sorry cant remember which) the os will usually ignore bios assigned irq's which leaves a reserved irq that is always blank. unless u have a major problem set the bios "pnp os installed" to yes and disable all bios irq assignments. let the os do it all

oooo could be a problem. dell is proprietary. mb and everything. there is a specific way u install software for them. ew have all dells at work (about 20 of them) all came with nt4.0. well if i reload a system, i have to hit f6 or sunthin and load dell drivers for it. if i dont the system wont install and freezes.

u can also add this /fastdetect at the end of the default os
