    battle of the computers

Whoops!! Looks like I pushed my luck too far, wont run stable at 1GHz Oh well, 950 off of an 800MHz Duron is still pretty good for an overclock. I wasnt betting on more than a 200MHz overclock in the first place anyhow, so Im not really all that surprised. Oh, well...

    battle of the computers

Oh, yeah!!!!! 1GHz, baby!!!!!!!!!!! I dont think I push my luck any more for the time being, but I'll see. I might push for 1.1 GHz, but I dont know how much I'll have to bump up the voltage. Ive got a Global Win FOP 38 and it seems to be doing alright, but I probably shouldnt push my luck. Oh well...See, Pimpin, how good of a deal you can get with the Durons? Just take care and buy a good cooler--no cheap sh*t, actually spend some good money on one...at least $20, but expect more like $25-$30 for starters. There is one mondo cooler from Swiftech that is $70, but it uses those four holes around the socket to be installed and you have to take your mobo out to put it on, but the cooling is damn good. Check out Toms Hardware for the cooler review. Where I live, I was able to get my Global Win FOP 38 for $21 + tax, but dont go for some cheapo HSF or you'll be buying ANOTHER cpu, and of course that would suck big time.

    battle of the computers

Well, now Im working on OCing the ol Duron 800 to 1GHz...yup Eddie, you were right, had to put the lead down thick. Ive got it at 950 MHz right now with no voltage adjustments. Im gonna try to get it to the gigahertz speed...hopefully I can make it. I dont expect more than a 200MHz overclock, but I'll see. Hehehehe.

    Global Win FOP38...

BTW, Ive also powered it down and taken off the Global Win and felt the core, but it didnt seem warm. Im really perplexed at this cooling reading and beginning to think that the fan reading is screwed up.

    Global Win FOP38...

I got that connector to the PSU, but it still doesnt do any damn good! WTF?! I have a sh!tload of fans--with the airflow going from front to back. Could the monitor be screwed up now? Cuz it is a cool system with all the fans I got in there. This is driving me nuts. I thought I wasnt putting enough thermal compound on, nothing. I dont know if the fan is screwy or what, but whatever it is this is insane.

    fan noise

There will be some very loud fans or HSF like the Global Wins are supposedly loud. Also, Swiftech has some gigantic coolers that are 50dB, so if you want a quiet pc, those ones are to be avoided. Tom's hardware guide has a good article on HSFs that includes the best cooling, the noise level, and some estimates of HSF prices. Also, as Ive found out today, some HSFs will only run around their spec'd rpm if they are plugged into one of the PSU power connectors, and you'll have to get a cpu fan header to PSU power connection. I will be snagging one tomorrow, so that way my cpu can enjoy the cooling that every other component is enjoying.

    Global Win FOP38...

BTW...the FOP38 says it will run better off the PSU and I feel inside the case since Ive rigged it up with an insane amount of fans, but I still think that the way people rave about the Global Win HSFs, this should be performing MUCH better that it is. I dont expect a fan to necessarily be on the dot with the rpm but I do expect it to be close. Im betting that the problem is being hooked up to the mobo instead of the PSU. BTW, will I be able to boot up with the HSF NOT plugged into the CPU fan header or will I have to fake it out. I have the Asus A7V, bios revision 1007 final.

Im afraid you're wrong, IMO; Monty Python and the Holy Grail is. It's a hilarious movie. Also, anything by Mel Brooks is good too. Not that I mind the b l o o d and guts movies, but this is a personal preference. heheheheheheheheheheheheheheheheheheheheee [This message has been edited by Brian Frank (edited 04 April 2001).]

I like money, and if things go well, I could be hired at a local computer shop. Whats better than getting paid to do something you love?

    AGP Apature Size?

It seems to make a much bigger difference if you use a 3dfx agp card. I have 384MB ram, and Ive just left the apeture size as 256 MB, just because I used to have a Voodoo 4 and that helped it out. I dont know how much it affects the GF/2-series, though. Play around and see if you notice any thing.

What beta version has run best?

This is on my test system, so if things go screwy, I havent lost anything other than time. My main rig will run Win2k for some time unless I see the worth of XP. I might as well see how things run with it, so I dont go something dumb like I did when I got ME. The system XP will run on: P3 667 Tyan Trinity 400 320 MB ram Voodoo 3 3000 AGP SB 16 PCI OEM Western Digital 17.2 GB ATA66 5400 RPM WD 2.5 GB ATA33 4500 RPM (for Mp3s) Realtek 8029 PCI NIC Toshiba 6x DVD floppy, etc. ... Ive got a dual boot with ME and 2k right now, but if I end up and reformat, ME will go, so I'll have the space for Linux if I dual boot between XP and 2k. Im still sticking with the V3 just because its compatible with lots of things still and it still works. If it dies, I'll just snag a dual head GF2MX card.

    Emergency Bios Recovery

Shrink is right: call MSI for a new bios chip. They may refer you to a bios vendor, but you'll be on track. Unless you feel like investing in another mobo.

    Damn 60GB won't format now in Win2k

Did the drive come with formatting tools? I know maxtor and western digital come with formatting floppies. Do you have partition magic? If you have pm, make the bootable disks and then format the drive that way. What filesystem are you running NTFS or FAT32? I personally run FAT32, but Win2k can read both filesystems and should be able to format them. I know 98 has a problem running a hard drive that big, but still, Win2k isnt even the same base code. Are the hdd jumpers set correctly?

    Emergency Bios Recovery

Ive been told NEVER EVER FLASH THE BIOS FROM WITHIN WINDOWS! Now, at your expense unfortunately, I see why. Unless Im wrong, you need either a new mobo or a new bios chip, because right now you are F*CKED!
