    DX8a + Descent 3

Like the Voodoo's, but I also like to have support--good support. Nvidia was the next logical choice. Im still keeping my Voodoo 3 3000 AGP cuz its got TV out and it works right out of the box with Linux and Win2k. Stupid MS couldnt have support for it automatically in ME--even though it came out AFTER Win2k. I did get a BSOD with Hercules drivers for Win2k when I exited a game in D3, but I got the leaked drivers and they--well all of the Nvidia Dets Ive used are problem free. 11.01 dets right here.

Whats yours expirience with IBM hard drives?

Imtim, I read an article in PC World about hard drives. In both 5400- and 7200-RPM hard drive categories, the Maxtors were the fastest in most cases--just a tad slower, by like a second or two in the 7200rpm. In the 5400 rpm hard drive category, the Maxtor drives smoked the IBM drives. I havent bought an IBM drive because they're more expensive than any other drive I can buy around here. My Maxtor is very good and very quiet. Western Digital's arent bad, but they are sure noisy. WD's tend to not like to share an IDE channel with another hard drive, but Maxtors dont seem to have a problem with 'em. I buy locally as much as possible because if something breaks down, you dont have to worry about shipping and if the company will get it back to you. Tiger Direct is the worst. Local prices may be higher than what you can get online, but you will have a better chance of getting the drive replaced and probably much sooner too.

    DX8a + Descent 3

Well Ive reinstalled since then. Dont know if it was the Radeon I tested out or DX8. Ive got DX8a and a GF2MX and everything works great. I probably should get a joystick for playing D3...probably work better than my mouse.

Why cant IE 5.0 display some pages?

My dad wants to know why IE 5 wont display some pages. He's got Zone Alarm and Norton Internet Security Family Edition installed. We use DSL, BTW. His system: PIII 800 MHz Abit BE6 latest bios GF2MX WD 18.2GB 7200RPM Hdd + Maxtor 20GB 7200RPM ATA100. Kingston KNE-110 10/100 NIC Win2k Pro SP1

Whats yours expirience with IBM hard drives?

I havent gotten an IBM drive just because they're expensive and Ive had no problems with WD's, Maxtors, and Fujitsu's drives.

Whats yours expirience with IBM hard drives?

The only manufacturer that ive seen have a bad drive is Quantum. The first drive I had was by them. Fortuanatly, when it died it wasnt in MY computer. Fujitsu's and Western Digitals are good too. I like my Maxtor, real quiet, and no problems yet. No problems if it dies either--Ive got a CD-RW drive, that all I really do is use it to back up. BTW, if you havent heard, Maxtor is buying out Quantum.

    Ok....wtf?

Whats wrong with an e-z install? Linux is a difficult OS to get running in the first place, why should one do it the hard way when theres the easy way? Oh boy! Mandrake 8.0 is in beta right now. Hopefully, Linux will reappear in town again. Havent seen it in awhile...
  8. Brian Frank

What beta version has run best?

Just a question RussellWild: Have you actually tested this one out? On the 9x front, drivers for 98 didnt always work for ME. Not to harrass you or anything, but your logic wasnt really...logical.

    XP Corporate Editions?

So would that mean that XP Personal would have activation and XP Pro wouldnt?
  10. Brian Frank

    Stupid Question...

I probably know the answer to this one anyway, but oh well. That XP activation thing doesnt prevent you from using it on more than one pc right? Im just asking because my dad is getting a beta copy of XP through the RC program. And another thing: any problems with a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP? Which of the drivers work best.
  11. Brian Frank

    Stupid Question...

Right on, clutch. I hope MS will not give everyone hell with XP like the people in the article. That or XP needs to be very cheap in comparison to current Windows prices. If they're cheap, then I wont have a fit, but I'll have to wait and see. I guess every OS has the pre-release horror stories.

Maxtor 60GB shows up as 30 in Win2k

Get some more jumpers from Radio Shack. Also, make sure the BIOS settings for the drive are set to LBA.

Changing to 2000-Pro and scared _hitless!

While Win2k does require a heftier memory requirement, it manages it much better. On my test machine with Win2k and ME, ME after boot up has around half of all the memory to work with; Win2k after bootup still has at least 2/3's of the total ram to work with still. The 9x line is not as good handling memory. Win2k IS finicky about hardware, but that CAN be a good thing, especially if you have a bad component. But if you're swapping mobos, you will be lucky if you can boot into Windows--but you should ALWAYS do a reformat when you go to a new mobo. I have found that the only times Win2k has froze up on me have been when Ive overclocked too high. There will be some software that absolutely will not work. It just depends on the software. Ive found that if the software will run under 98 AND NT4, it runs under Win2k. People who say Win2k sucks may not have had experience and just read something bad about it. Any OS will have problems, understand that, and one OS might not be the right one for two different people. If you have a Radeon card, I'll tell you right up front: the Radeon Win2k drivers suck. A lot of the hardware suffers more from bad drivers than anything else. Win2k wasnt intended to be a gaming or home OS--thats what Win9x was for. Another thing you need to be aware of is that Win2k automatically sets up the IRQs, regardless of the BIOS settings. This is normal to see most of your hardware on one IRQ, so dont panic. I have at least 9 things on the same IRQ and things run great. Do not try to run Win2k on 64 MB of ram--it is way too slow to do anything. Have at least 128 or better. Ideally you should have 256 if you are going to do some heavy duty gaming(Quake, Half-Life, Unreal Tournament,etc.). If you have DOS programs, you MAY be able to get them to work, but you also may not. Ive heard about a way to get them to work, but I havent care enough about dos to get things running. Also, if you have apps that won run under Win2k, there is a compatability app on the Win2k cd, and you still may be able to get the software to run. Ive found Win2k to be very good to me. Win2k also has very good networking and it can be setup during the installation. Check MS compatable hardware list for starters, and also check the NT compatible hardware section to see about other hardware too.
  15. Brian Frank

    Ok....wtf?

Well, miku, please understand that betas arent perfect, so sometimes they can screw up your system real bad so you have to reformat. They're in beta form because MS wants to get out the bugs first instead of just whipping out an OS and just selling it as is. If they did that, we'd all be running on Macs right now, or running Linux.

Am I the only one who thinks Win ME sucks?

Nobody know everything about computers. I dont, and neither do you, JJ32. Other people here like Clutch, Inferno2000, SHS, and Phillip are knowledgable people, but they dont know everything. Things will still go wrong for them. No one's exempt from PC problems...although, that'd be really nice. There's always something new with computers: new hardware, new standards, new gaming engines, new apps...so there's always something new to learn. But I dont think anyone knows it all. Bill Gates doesnt know it all.

Ooooooh! Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Thats sweet. I love to see the extras overclocking gives you.

    Stupid Question...

Now I just saw a post that concerns me. It seems that XP will have issues if you change any hardware, not just something like a mobo. Is this true? I dont want to have to reinstall for every piece of hardware I put in.

    half-life + win2k sp1 problem

Kritical, for the chipset, look in your manual. Even the cheapest boards will tell you what chipset it is, and a little bit more about jumpers. You do still have the manual... Another thing, what cpu do you have. If youre running a socket 7 board, specifically one with an ALi chipset, I suggest getting a new board and proc if you are serious about games. The chipset is more of an issue than the mother board maker-although a good board does help. Ive been less than impressed with ATI drivers under Win2k. The biggest bang for your buck is a GF2 MX. And Nvidia has MUCH better drivers than ATI does. The Radeon is a good card especially when it comes to DVD, but I buy a video card with gaming in mind first, and the Radeon cards dont cut it under 2k. Kritical, please post your specs so we can help you. A doctor cant operate blindly. Again, look at your manual.

    battle of the computers

I didnt want to come off as an @ss, but I wanted to make sure you werent trying to pull a stunt to say you had the best computer. The reason for this is because when I joined up, there was this guy who thought his PC was the stuff. Needless to say, the forum swarmed on him. Hes posted once since we put him back in his place. I didnt want you to start one of those. BTW, ive got a much better OC of my GF2MX. Ive heard the GTS cards might be able to hit 240 on the clocks, but thats it. On both the core and the ram clocks are running 200+ MHz. As for the A7V, they are kinda expensive ~$150 at least, I paid 189 for it, but I consider that a good trade off in case the board goes bad then you wont be as stuck as if you did it through mail-order. Dont ever get things from Tiger Direct. My dad did, but he never got replacements for them when some parts didnt work. The A7V may be cheaper since the A7V133 is out now. Id personally suggest looking locally for a new board. I havent heard much about that DFI board, but I have seen seen reviews of the FIC AZ-11e. That is better suited for overclocking than the FIC AZ-11, and is also more stable from what Ive read. The AZ-11e doesnt have the bells and whistles of the A7V or Abit KT7/A-line, but its gotten some good reviews. Go for the best board that you can afford.
