So, how bout them mets?
-
Except I dont have a Dreamcast. But that would be very interesting to see anyway.

No, you arent a complete pain in the @ss like JJ32. Anyone can be annoying, but you dont put yourself in @ssholeville. Youve been pretty helpful for the most part. Some people cant take a joke, but sometimes you do go overboard a little. But you shouldnt be kicked out. We need people to be blunt (not THAT blunt) about issues sometimes.

Now here's something bizarre: can you say "No Start Programs" Well, my 98 using friend sure can. This is a clean install, but he doesnt want to install AGAIN. Plus, hes hooked on System Shock 2 and doesnt want to have to fight his way back to his place right now. Under programs, there is ONE item. Thats it. From what he tells me the other menu items-settings, documents, etc. are Okay. He reformatted/reinstalled after a buncha Radeon tweaks screwed stuff up. He is using no tweaks right now. Here's his specs: Duron 800 FIC AZ11 at least 128MB ram Radeon 32 DDR AGP Western Digital 20 GB ATA100 7200 RPM Affrey 10x DVD 98SE. This is really weird. Havent heard of this stuff before...have you? I'll try to get some more info...

Oh, okay. I'll tell my friend to try that. The mobo came with a full version of Norton AV.
-
Im not even sure if I'll go to SP2 really. Im running SP1 w/o a hitch. Win2k right out of the box is the best OS thus far.
-
Good ideas, but this happened without those. It was like after the second reboot after a full install of Windows, where windows was done installing completely and setting up everything. Like when you got to use windows for the first time. Unless....would a dirty DVD-ROM drive screw up an install that bad. I'll see if these things work right. No virus scanner yet. Its just the drivers, but theyve worked fine before, and like System Shock 2.

Why was h@te edited out?

While I differ on the opinions with HarU, at least he's civil about this. I personally dont like ME. YES, I HAVE DONE A CLEAN INSTALL OF ME! JJ32, I dont know if you only pay attention to the fact that I dont like ME or what, but please dont rub my face in the dirt just because MY OPINION does not match YOUR OPINION. I know full well I dont have the education of an IT tech. You would do well to note that there are other guys with plenty of tech knowledge here, but their not going "You have stupid opinions and you are a complete moron." I dont want to start another thread like Jdulmage did, but apparently character assaissination is not out of bounds. [This message has been edited by Brian Frank (edited 27 March 2001).]

The Dets seem to get faster with each release. I havent had problems with any non-WHQL certified Dets. I havent updated my video bios. I have to more research, but it seems as though you may only be able to update the bios in Win9x, so far. See how the 1007 Asus bios does to fix your problems. Go ahead an enable fast writes, but if it causes problems, disable it. Even though I have an MX card and the A7V, the same fixes for me might not solve your problems, but from what I hear, the 1007 bios fixes a lot of issues for everyone. Also, you may want to make sure of two things if problems continue: have a 300 watt power supply and plenty of cooling for the T-Bird.

Thanks Cardinal.

Yup. I got a Duron 800-now 904-and incresed some, but when I dropped the $100 on a GF2MX that made the difference...like 2000 (yes 2000) points on 3dmark. Also, if you set your cas and timings to 2t instead of 3t, it can speed up your system a little bit. But the prob is if you dont have ram that can run at that speed, you'll have problems. Real good advice: GET X-SETUP! Uhh lets see it: enables nVidia cards clock adjustment feature (works with the 10.80s), encreases efficency, what ever TweakUI does and a whole lot more. Also, getting the latest bios helps tremendously. Ive got the Asus A7V and updated to the 1007 bios. I had problems fixed that I didnt know were issues with the bios. Plus, the Bios is FREE! What can I say, Im a cheap . And you should be too. Only upgrade what is going to give you a major bang for the buck. Remember its the Durons and Celerons and GeForce 2 MX's that make you a damn good box...if you get the right components.

ROLF Hahahahahahahahahahahahah After all these years...

Well, I guess Im not the only one who thinks ME sucks, but the populous of some 9x users dont agree with me. Im so glad we live so far apart from each other. (jinx myself right now)

Hmm...If its just hooked up to an extra pair of IDE controllers, Windows will think its a SCSI drive even if its IDE. I would worry about it unless your having problems.
-
I agree with JJ32, get the latest Dets. and upgrade to the 1007 Bios. That fixes a Sh*tload of problems! I believe the 10.80dets are the latest drivers out. Those are very nice. Also, JJ32 is right, the Bios settings are best left on Auto, if at all possible. Ive changed the boot sequence and one or two other things, but thats it. Much less problems.

One of my boxes has a V3 3000 under Win2k with the 1.04 drivers...I think. Anyway Ive got it under SP1 with no problems. Id really say, if you dont have any need to go to SP1, skip it. Updates do fix alot of problems, but they can also create new ones. Heard of Wicked GL? Ive been meaning to try it, but Im lazy. Since 3dfx really doesnt exist in the sense of putting out anything now, drivers are pretty much done with. The best alternative is a GF2 MX. Those are pretty damn fast. I like 3dfx cards, but well having support is really nice too. It may be time to give up the V3 for your rig.

Well, if your gonna get a new chip, it might not be a bad idea, but it depends on how much more it is for the T-Bird 900 over the Duron 850. On average, the Duron can pull 90% of the T-Bird. Id say shoot for it, but be a little conservative on the OC this time. Athlons are cheap, but I dont want to buy more parts than necessary. Then with the money you dont spend fixing things, you can buy some newfangled part.

Oh but I do keep up with the latest drivers ! have the latest bios for my board. Im running the 10.80 drivers cuz they're the fastest out there. Some things I dont update, especially if it works fine right now, unless it will make things work better. I never said I just install the OS and be done with it. Speed is of the essence. JJ32, Id appreciate your comments if you wouldnt be such a motherfukking sonofab!tch @sshole sh!thead! I could give a rats *** what OS you use! You use ME, I'll use 2k. I can install and run ME, but there are somethings that I prefer about 2k one being networking, and the other better stability. The only times Ive crashed are when I overclock too high. For crying out loud, dont be such a dick about this! Im not saying you CANT use ME, this post was to find out who like ME and who didnt. Eddie, is this the most annoying guy youve seen on the forum?

So the promo upgrade is bad news? That probably explains a WHOLE lot. Norton Antivirus wouldnt run when schedualed, my games crashed more often. I really think MS shouldve left more of DOS with ME or just completely taken it away. That was probably a major part of the stability issue. Still, even on a clean install, there were problems. JJ32, this post is an opinion, you may not like my opinions, but that doesnt make me an idiot. Just because you havent had problems, doesnt mean someone else hasnt either. Heaven forbid we have problems with any OS and talk about them. One OS does not suit everyone best. ME is geared toward home, but it is not one of the best ones Ive experienced. Not saying that we should ditch MS (at least for now) and go to Linux. Linux has a long way to go before it reaches the home OS front. ME had some problems that had MS waited to fix these problems, wouldve had a lot less issues to deal with. I dont think that home users have to only use the 9x line and businesses only have to use the NT-based OS's or Linux. MS did a smart strategy, but I dont have to like everything about the OS targeted at me. I prefer Win2k, but there are somethings that I wish wouldve been implemented from 9x. MS config was very nice, but I have to use another program to clear out my start menu. While around in the registry isnt a bad thing if you back up before messing around, the fact that it is rather massive in the first major key. I dont feel like doing something the hard way if I can do it the easy way.
