    Boycott Rambus

Im proposing a boycott of RAMBUS, and to flood them with mail and e-mail to show how much we disapprove of their lawsuit. Toms Hardware has a good article stating exactly why he doesnt like Rambus. Any company that uses low blow tactics like that to get a very inferior product into the market should be made know to the world. And lets not let Intel off the hook either. Intel is a much bigger company and apparently getting more money was a bigger concern than having a good business. AMD does have a lisence to utilize Rambus. Funny thing though: they're pushing DDR instead. This isnt to bash on owners of P4's and RDRAM combos or PIII/RDRAM combos. This is a boycott on a questionable company with very questionable ethics. Please read the article at Toms Hardware for more info.

    ME/9x can't see my Win2k box!

Ive tried and tried to get ME to see my Win2k only box, but I cant. Ive looked at my dad's configuration, but I cant see any difference. Weve got NetBEUI,TCP/IP, IPX/SPX networking and MS file and printer sharing on the computers. One box with 98 will see my dad's computer, but not either of mine, even when my dual boot is in Win2k. In ME it works fine. Heres the 4 computers here My main box runs Win2k SP1 My dual boot runs Win2k SP1/ME My little brother's box runs Win98 My dad's box runs Win2k SP1 Im not sure, but it seems to be some issue with my box. Except for my main box, which has a D-Link DFE-530TX series (dont remember which one), they all use a Realtek 10/100 NIC. Ive had problems running ME and networking with Win2k. I have a friend that sometimes brings his box over, and he can see my dual boot box and access it, but my main box is inaccessible. He can see the icon on the network, but thats it. All the computers are seen by ME/9x, but cannot access them. Ive tried typing in the location, right click to open, no luck. If you need specs, let me know and I'll post all 4.

    battle of the computers

Theres a benchmarking program called 3DMark2000, and thats what we're referring to. I believe that http://www.the-ctrl-alt-del.com has it available to download. The company that makes it is putting out 3DMark2001, but that requires a bit more muscle to push around. So you'd get some humiliating scores. The higher the better. If you saw Inferno2000's score, you will drool.

I saw an article in one of the past 5 issues of Windows2000 magazine. I dont know the website, but try to check it out as they will probably post their magazine articles there too.

    Geforce 3

Now that nVidia's got 3dfx technology, I hope they put it to good use, think of how sweet the card with both technologies would be.

    Geforce 3

Yeah, although I had to get nVidia's drivers to fix a crashing problem in Descent 3. I got it for $100, and that's what sold me. That and the fact that Best Buy actually had some video cards in stock. Running 10.80 drivers really runs good, along with ol' Powerstrip. Hehehe. The drivers seem to be getting faster as they progress up. ATI has the best DVD playback, but its gonna take a lot more than that to get me to buy another ATI card. Hopefully the Radeon Maxx will have the Win2k drivers that run really good, otherwise nVidia will have a monopoly on the market. You think the GF3 is expensive now, just wait until the next chip comes out if ATI doesnt pick up the pace. I do see what I was missing. 4474 in 3dmark. The ol' Voodoo 4 could barely crack 3000.

    battle of the computers

I was trying to get people to start showing 3dmark scores on another thread, but it didnt work. So I guess I'll help push this one along. Show me what you got! Latest score in 3dmark: 4474! Of course if youve seen Inferno2000's, you know what your up against. [This message has been edited by Brian Frank (edited 18 March 2001).]

Is there anyway to upgrade ME to 2000?

You dont need a boot disk for Win2k! The only time you would need any floppy is if your installing an extra pair of IDE controllers or a scsi controller. You can boot off the Win2k cd. I never said anything about booting off an ME disk. The ME disk is pretty much worthless for anything other than getting into ME. If he's upgrading from ME the way it is now, he should just run the setup from ME. The best way though is to do a clean install. If you use the upgrade to Win2k, you need some previous version of Windows, to prove you have it. You can use the 98 upgrade or the full version. I know that works with either version of 98. I dont use a floppy except to install the IDE controller on the install. Unless you cant boot off the CD, then you have to make 4 Win2k boot floppies for it to work. Karna, if this is the way you want to do it, fine, but its easier just to boot off the cd if at all possible. Its not 98 upgrade.

    battle of the computers

Im gonna stick with the Detonator Drivers as Descent 3 wont crash after exiting a game (BSOD for the nv4.dll with hercules drivers) 3dmark with Norton AV and ZoneAlarm installed: 4204.

    best DVD Player (soft)

I love PowerDVD, but for some reason, I cant run it. Im currently using WinDVD and it works great, but Id still rather have PowerDVD. Try out the players youd like to have, as you can get demos off Cyberlink's website for PowerDVD (www.cyberlink.com.tw) and for WinDVD (www.intervideo.com)

    Descent3 + BSOD

Okay, Ive got a clean install of Win2k and a new Hercules Prophet II MX with the 6.53 drivers off Hercules site. When ever I exit a level I get the blue scree with a stop message with something about nv4.dll file. Im patched up to the lastest version of D3, but that didnt fix it. Ive installed the AMD compatability patch too. My specs below: ------------------ Whaazzzupppppppppp! Asus A7V Duron 800@904MHz 384 MB SDRAM PC133 Samsung 48x CD-ROM Toshiba 12x DVD-ROM Zip CD650 USB 4/4/6 Zip 100 USB Maxtor 20.4 GB ATA100 Hercules Prophet II MX Guillemot Maxi Sound Fortissimo SIIG 3 port 1394 PCI Adapter D-Link DFE-530 10/100 NIC Creative Cambridge Soundworks FPS1000 MS Intellimouse Optical Kleer 17-inch @ 85Hz 1152x864x32 desktop Kiwi Orb Fan with additional CoolerMaster strapped onto one side HDD cooler pulling air in Dual slot fan to suck air out Case fan to suck air out Dual 80mm fans to blow on cards.

Well, I got the Detonator 7.52 Drivers and fixed the problem. And better 3dmark scores to boot.

    SB128PCI CT4700 in Win2k troubles...

Ive got the Guillemot Fortissimo and love it. Runs flawlessly w/o drivers right out of the box. Seems that Creative thinks they can do whatever they please since they just about own the sound card market. Older SB cards like the SB16 PCI still work and ISA cards work fine, but these Live cards seem to have a load of problems, and its just because Creative thinks that they can treat customers like crap. ATI did this with one of their Video cards, and that didnt sit well. The only problem with the fortissimo is if you plug in a splitter cable to the front output, sound only comes out strong on one side, but if you use headphones, you cant tell.

    IRQ conflict

Yeah, Bubsy is right about installing the drivers twice. My dad has the same board, and it runs flawlessly. He's got a hard drive on each HighPoint controller, and a CD-Rom on one regular IDE channel, and a CD-Burner on the other, no problems. Also, I looked in the manual, and it said not to have the Highpoint drivers installed along with the IDE busmaster drivers or problems would happen. Cant remember the last time he reinstalled Win2k either. I think he's installed it twice since buying it. Please leave the IRQs alone, that aint the problem. BSODs are hardware related, and it seems to be with your highpoint controllers. Try to reinstall the drivers and see if it fixes the problem.

Oh come on! What Detonator Drivers should I use? And where besides nVidia can I get them. I only found the 6.50 drivers there.

Easy cd creator 5 vs Nero 5.5

If you want to make labels, the best program is Sure Thing CD Lable Maker. I use Easy CD Creator and Direct CD, but not the labeling program...well, the jewel case stuff is okay, but STCLM has the templates for a variety of CD label sets: Memorex, Neato...to name a few. Plus you can choose between Letter and A4 sizes, helpful for those in the UK.

Is a pagefile required for each drive?

Each OS you have must have its own swap file. Dont delete it. I have mine set like this: Min:1.5xRAM, Max:2xRAM. On a dual boot, either have a separate swap partition for both OS's, or just keep the swap file for the OS on its respective partition.

2 wav sources playing at once?

Uhh Ive got the SB16PCI on my test system, works fine. Could be just cause its ISA. Could also be going bad too. Not to mention youre comparing two differnt sound cards.

    Rats

Well now the only way out of this is to give up or get a new mobo. D-Link puts out pretty good NICs, we havent had good luck with Linksys.
