Actually, now I just got a Duron 800, well its 904MHz now...hehehe. I am beginning to see the limitations of the V4, however, Im gonna wait and see how far the GF2 GTS cards will drop since the GF3 is out now and nVidia probably wants to get the price down so they can sell more.

Well, I just dropped some $$ on the Duron 800 and a Kiwi orb cooler. Now time to OC...hehehe. I do see that my V4 AGP is the bottleneck, but I think I'll wait for some good deals on a GF2 GTS since the GF3 is out now, and nVidia would be wise to get the cards based on it cheaper then they are now. Im looking at an Asus GTS or something from Hercules...in a few months. Well, OCing my proc should get me over 3000 in 3dmark now. OC by FSB should get me to 904 no problems. Slapped some heatsink compound on the core and it dropped the temp back into the 90 F range...musta not put enough on the ol' Duron 600. If all else fails, the FSB should work, but it depends on the mobo too. Good luck

OOOOH, Wow!. I wish that "Why is my system so dope?" fag see that score. Lets here it for overclocking. This is another good reason I dont try to act like Ive got the sweetest system on the planet, cause I know I'll get smacked down real bad. At least Ive got the fastest box at home...well, that could change once my dad puts in his GF2 MX card, but I still have far greater expandability.Hahahahahaaaaaa VERY NICE Inferno2000! Very nice indeed. I think I'll crawl back into my little hole now...

Cardinal, if WinDVD is crap, why can I use that to play DVDs and not PowerDVD? I have a version thats only specified for 95/98/NT4 but programs like that Ive found will run fine under Win2k. I love PowerDVD, but Im not gonna go to the latest version until I know for certain it will work. No sense throwing money away. Wolf87, does DVDGenie work with 3dfx cards, cause thats what I have, not an nVidia one, and Ive heard DG only works with nVidia cards.

what allocation size should i format my hardisk to?
Brian Frank replied to erichui's topic in Hardware
Yes, you can format your drive as one big hard drive as NTFS. There are 2 ways to go about having one partition: one is use a formatting utility like Maxtors MaxBlast (I love it anyway) or FDISK it. Then boot off the Win2k CD. There will be a point where it will ask you if you want to format your hard drive to a format or leave it the same, among the formats is NTFS. If you plan on doing a dual boot in the future, however, its best to leave the hard drive as FAT32 because Win9x cant read NTFS. And it may cause some booting problems. You shouldnt have any problems. Once you do format the hard drive, you'll be rebooted, just make sure to hit any key to boot off the cd and then follow installation procedure, skipping the formating this time. -
Hmm, maybe I should wait a month a wait till the Duron 800 or 850 comes down in price and a GF2 MX or GTS drops some more. I'll probably go with the faster processor first as Ive seen by overclocking that faster processor does do some wonders. The only problem I'll probably run into is going from a 3dfx card to another. Would I screw stuff up if I went with a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP? That seems to be the only issue with 3dfx cards is changing to or from them, and if I could get the V5 so I wouldnt have to reinstall Windows, that would be nice...that and if Im able to fit it in my case. I figure to look at a V5 just because it's double what the V4 and having the same graphics chip might save a reinstall. If I can find one now.

Well, that certainly might explain why that trick didnt work for me...just had to use the FSB. I used a mechanical pencil #2 .07mm lead. Should I have used a normal, wood pencil? Duron 600

What manufacturer makes the best overall GF2 cards in general. I can get Asus, Hercules, Elsa, Creative are ones that come to mind. My dad just got a GF2 MX by J-Ton, some Japanese company...Ive never heard of them, but it was just $105 for the card.

Curious if windows XP will be worth to upgrade to
Brian Frank replied to imtim83's topic in Hardware
To the tune of "The Real Slim Shady" Would the guy, jdulmage, please shut up please shut up. Look, MS has screwed up with the authentication codes on other products before, not necessarily Windows, but Office. People have reported not being able to use the software on a different computer, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS OWNED BY THE SAME PERSON. Hopefully, MS will get this straighted out by the time XP comes to market, or there will be a lot of angry consumers. That could give the Mac OS and Linux a jump on MS. MS does have a right to have authentication codes for their software and OSs, they'd be insane not to, however these codes should not prevent the home user from installing it on all of their computers, regardless of how many they may own. There's gonna have to be a lot more than what MS is advertising for XP. I bought into ME and got bit hard for it. ME has a lot of things regarding compatability and installing items that should be a choice of the user, specifically the Movie Maker program. System Restore is a good idea, but Im gonna turn it off if it takes up too much space. Stability and ME are two things that do not go together. Hopefully, MS will not screw up this big with XP. Right now, 2000 is very good, and I see no compelling reason to upgrade to XP, especially after my encounter with ME. This is my opinion, and I will continue to advertise it until I am convinced otherwise that XP is a worthwhile upgrade from 2000. -
Problems with Soundblaster Live Platinum 5.1

Unless youve got the latest BIOS update for the A7V, PCI slot 2 shares an IRQ with the Promise ATA100 controller. There are only two things you can do: update the BIOS or leave PCI slot 2 open. Also try disabling the serial and printer ports if your not using them. Also, this got me out of a fix, go into BIOS and set it to the defaults on the exit menu. Wurked for me. ------------------ Whaazzzupppppppppp! It also might help if I told you what the lead pencil trick is. After you connect the L1 bridges, you should be able to overclock the processor by increasing the clock multiplier along with increasing the voltage. Even if youve got a mobo with the KT133 chipset on it having a limited FSB manipulation up till only 113MHz before things dont like you, if you combine the two, things will fly. Just becareful, if you screw up your hardware, the manufacturers wont replace anything if they find out you were overclocking it.
-
Oh, you dont know. Okay, its really simple, after you get your processor if you havent yet, or take it out of the system for this. Take a #2 lead pencil and connect the little L1 dots on the Duron/Athlon processor, do this with each pair on the L1's, but nothing else. I saw a picture of it on the web, and it helped me. Its much easier if you can see it. I dont want to go through the hell of getting the HSF off my processor again. I'll probably just cut the band that holds it down when i get a new processor or HSF, probably at the same time.

Okay, Im looking to suck out every last ounce of power from my system. I have the Asus A7V rev.1004. Ive overclocked everything I can, but Im wondering about some settings in BIOS regarding the AGP settings. Ive got the Voodoo 4 4500 AGP as my video card. There these two settings for AGP drive control for manual settings: agp drive strength p control-default is at C, and agp drive strength n control-default is at E. Both options go from 0-9 to A-F. Now how do these affect my performance, if at all and which way do I set them: closer to E or closer to 0? Also will this AGP fast write do anything to benefit from being used? Options are Disabled and Enabled. My specs are on the signature line for any help. ------------------ Whaazzzupppppppppp! Replace your shell, hmm. Now why does that sound like a bad idea? Somehow that just doesnt seem like a real good way to help yourself. If you play around with stuff in the software, you could really screw stuff up. But then again, user error seems to be the only surefire way to screw up your system enough to have to reinstall windows... Id stay away from that stuff...that sounds like something along the lines of randomly deleting registry entries.

Oh good. I see more people have no life like me. At least we're trying to accomplish something. In other worthless news: I successfully overclocked some generic memory with Micro Q or something like that rated at PC133 to 150MHz. Id try more but Ive got the Asus A7V with the KT133 chipset. Since the ol' L1 lead pencil trick didnt work, Im stuck with FSB overclocking 6x113 clock speed ~680MHz. Just for the heck of it my specs on the sig line. I wonder what beer I'll like. Oh well, I turn 21 towards the end of the year. I can get smashed at the next new years eve party! ------------------ Whaazzzupppppppppp! As much as I dont like a lot of what MS does, I think this trial is a bunch of crap. Im not say MS didnt do anything illegal, but what this trial really comes down to is that some people are pissed that MS is making all the money and they're not. End of story.

Problems : WMP crashes Win2K PRO when playing video clip an
Brian Frank replied to stmok's topic in Software
First off, ditch MP7 as its had problems under win2k. Also, if you dont have a 300 watt power supply, that could be causing some problems, you have a lot of components including scsi so having enough juice could be part of your problem. SB Live cards have problems under Win2k. Use the default drivers and see if you still have the same problems. That blue screen you got is due either to hardware incompatability with your SB Live or the device drivers for the SB are a problem. Check Creative's website to look for drivers specifically for Win2k. Lots of people with SB cards have problems under win2k, especially SB Live. Look around on this forum, cause I swear Ive seen stuff about SB Live problems. Im betting that your problems stem from the SB Live. Ive heard of the SB's causing slowdowns. As for the hard drives, check to make sure the ide/scsi cables are fully plugged in at both ends. You dont have any idea how much that can screw up your system. Id also look into getting my hard drives checked out or just the suspect one(s). Good luck. -
At least in desktop computers, there's a way to reset bios by moving the jumpers from one set of pins to another set for a few seconds. This jumper is by the CMOS battery in computers ive seen. If the 133 stands for the processor speed of the laptop, its recent enough that there might be the jumper. I dont know if this is true cause ive had a couple of laptops, but the newest one had a 130 meg hard drive in it and the other one just had memory chips in it and a couple of floppy drives. Try to see if you can reset the bios with the jumpers. That all I can give you to go on.

Yeah, its best to reinstall with a new mobo. Things really begin to suck if you dont. Win2k is really hardware sensative to changes. With any MS OS its a good idea to reformat. Linux doesnt seem to care, but Windows does. I'll bet your problems are coming from Win2k getting confused about the new mobo. And I wasnt insulting you...I was giving you fair warning so you wouldnt piss anyone off.

Curious if windows XP will be worth to upgrade to
Brian Frank replied to imtim83's topic in Hardware
I agree with RattDawg. Why do you have to buy a copy of an OS for each computer in your home? Is Microsoft trying to rob us blind? Maybe its their scheme for world domination! -
Well, whats it say on the box as far as OS compatability. If it lists NT 4 and 98, you should be able to run it under 2k. If it only runs on 9x, try the compatability app on the Win2k cd. But I cant guarantee that will work.
-
Hey, just post something totally worthless, like just one word everyday. Or we can just show off our specs, that could make this thread longer.... But there are all those posts like "Why is my system so dope." Maybe we should copy that thread into this one... Maybe I Should Shut Upppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp 8) I like putting these guys up Can you tell?

Okay, get drunk and start typing. Or get high and start typing. Maybe one post will fill up an entire page!!!!!!!! Or we can waste space like this. And this! Yeah, dawg. I have no life.
-
Try setting you processor back to normal and trying the compatability app. If that doesnt work, you may just be asking too much of your system. Applications including games that are made only for the 9x core are not guaranteed to run on NT or Win2k, even with a compatability app. Thats probably why some people have gotten it to work and others havent. If taking the Duron back down to 800 doesnt help any, you may just have to give up. See if there's a newer version or a patch you can get to run it under 2k. You shouldnt have problems with overclocking affecting the game, but thats no guarantee that its not causing problems.
