Win9x Drivers are not going to be compatible with 2000, NT drivers MIGHT be compatible but I know for a fact that 3dfx has specific drivers for the V3. Also, make sure your downloading the right drivers, as the V3 wont be at the top of the drivers page.

Most of the info about dual booting I put up in your latest post. You will have to get a partitioning tool like partition magic 6 to do this. Then install 98se on the new partition. Then run the repair option off the the win2k disk.
-
JBoDean: did you go to or from any 3dfx card recently since youve installed win2k. 3dfx cards seem to be very touchy about any other card, including another 3dfx card, in the system after or before it. To do a dual boot you have to have another partition on your hard drive. If you dont, get ahold of a partitioning utility like partition magic 6 and use that to set your partitions up. Then install ME on the other partition. Once youre done, run the repair option off the win2k cd (you boot off it and hit 'R' instead of 'Enter'). Then under win2k you can set the default OS by right clicking My Computer/properties/Advanced tab/starup and recovery. Its recommended that you set your virtual memory to a minimum of 1.5xram to Maximum of 2xram. You can change the IRQs, but youd have to reinstall win2k if you did that.I learned that the hard way. I really wouldnt suggest trying to change IRQs. Oh, make sure you defrag your hard drive. If possible, put your swap file (virtual memory) on a separate partition. This will keep it from getting fragmented too much, if at all. ------------------ Whaazzzupppppppppp! Heres what concerns me with XP and future MS os's: subscription based software and OS's. Thats something Im not too keen on. Also from what Ive heard XP is gonna require a minimum of 128 megs. I can personally attest to the fact that win2k is almost unusable with 64. I dont think we need to shell out the big bucks everytime we upgrade an OS just so we can run it. But the biggest concern I have is with the subscription based part of XP. Oh sure, we'll still see shrink-wrapped software...for now. Think about the security hacks against Windows now...once weve got this subscription based thing going off the net think of the possiblity for even more attacks. Plus, seeing the fact that Windows gets bigger and bigger with each release, who wants to download a 600 meg os. Not me, thats why weve got Cd-roms and dvd's for. Plus if your doing a clean install, youre not going to be doing that on a 56k modem, and even with dsl and cable, your gonna sit there for 10 hours just waiting for the os to download--before you can install it. And, oh say, you lose power or the server your downloading from goes out, your screwed. Id say if MS goes with a sole web based format for all their software they're shooting themselves in the foot.

I dont have your board, but to get the memory to use the CAS-2 setting, look under one of the advanced menus about memory timings. There you can set the board to automatically detect the ram settings or manually set the cas timing. Consult your manual too. Also, its probably wise to take out that stick of pc100 if you want to use the 133 MHz front side bus setting (FSB). Im not saying that youll screw yourself 100% if you do, but pc100 ram isnt really made to run at a 133 FSB. If you do keep the pc100 stick in, put the 256 stick in the first dimm slot. This is supposed to get the maximum performance out of the memory if you put the highest meg dimms in the lower dimm slots.

Are the latest drivers any good, I have the 1.03 drivers...are the 1.04 drivers good. Havent heard much about them at all...older technology.

To run under Win2k get drivers for win2k at www.3dfx.com Youll get some message "To our valued customers...blah,blah" Click on the download yellow lettering on the top of the page and youll be sent to the drivers page. I have noticed sometimes I cant get on to 3dfx's page, but I just try again later.

Can you install windows 2000 ti dual boot with winme?
Brian Frank replied to kuchitree's topic in Hardware
The only problem with Down8 solution is that since WinME can only read FAT partitions, anything you would have on your Win2k NTFS partition would be unreadable and you would have to have any info you wanted on the ME partition as well as your Win2k. Yes, you could boot into win2k and just drag the files over to ME, but when your in ME its just a pain in the neck. And Ive just done an ME /2000 dual boot without doing a fresh install, just like I did with a Win98/2000, just boot off the Win2k cd rom and use the repair option and just do an automatic repair. I already listed the complete stuff in my first post on this topic. -
Okay, ive got the latest updates for HL. The problems comes when I want to select the game on the net I want to play. I see nothing on the part of the screen where it should list the available games. If I use the quick start option I can play the games, but thats the only way I can. LAN game work okay. And the only other machine currently running HL is running under Win98 and it has no probs with HL. ------------------ Whaazzzupppppppppp! Wow, I didnt know there were PS/3 ports on a computer now. You should be able to increase the speed of your mouse in one of the menus in UT. I dont remember which one, but I have a USB mouse and it runs just fine under UT. Also, try getting the latest good drivers for your card, unless your running a Voodoo 4 4500-the newest full drivers actually slow down the card.

I need help!!! my pc is rebooting every 20 minutes
Brian Frank replied to danman2000's topic in Hardware
Ive seen a lot of graphics card related problems with that gigabyte mobo and processor with PCI and AGP cards:voodoo 3 PCI, Radeon DDR, GeForce 256. I think Inferno 2000 had some problem with the same board/processor/but with a GF256. Ive seen it somewhere on one of the more recent posts. And there is some fix for it. Personally, Id say ditch that POS gigabyte and get any other board and proc except a Cyrix. I dont know what it is with that board/proc combo, but its trouble. -
Can you install windows 2000 ti dual boot with winme?
Brian Frank replied to kuchitree's topic in Hardware
In order to do a dual boot with any win9x/2000 combo, your hard drive MUST be formatted to FAT32. If not this will almost certainly not work. Next, it is better to install win9x first, then win2k but you can still do a dual boot like that. Install ME on the partition you set aside for it. After that, run the win2k repair option off the setup CD. Once thats done--right click on MY COMPUTER/properties/advanced/starup and recovery (its at the bottom of the box). Then you can set the default boot OS and time till it boots to that OS. NOTE: Ive only tested this with win98, but I got it out of an MS IT book. It should work, but I dont trust ME. The safest way is to do a clean install Win ME then 2000, but this ought to work. -
You cant have too much ram with Win2k. Ive found that the more memory you have, the better things run. Of course if Microsoft wouldnt have such a bloated OS we probably wouldnt need such hefty memory requirements. Just wait until XP...the minimum ram requirements are supposed to be 128 megs. Sucks, dont it. Like I said, the way MS runs there OS, you cant have too much ram, until you max out your limit.

If the 512 MB stick is cheaper than 2 256 sticks. But on the other hand, maybe having an extra dimm slot or 2 open is good. With Win2k, theres no such thing a too much ram. Supposedly, WinXP will require a minimum of 128 megs, so assuming you will upgrade sometime, stock up on sdram while its still cheap. The current Maxtor (ATA100, 5400rpm, 20.4 GB) ive got is so freakin quiet. I dont get ibm's just because theyre so expensive. Also having an AGP video card will benefit you even running at 1x its still faster than a PCI video card mainly because the AGP slot is on it's own exclusive bus, whereas the PCI shares its bus with other PCI devices so the more you have PCI wise the more clogged that bus will be. To hold you over, make sure youve got the latest full (not beta) drivers for the Voodoo for win2k. As for DDR and 200MHz FSB, the duron does support a 200 MHz FSB with DDR. WCPUID says that it has a DDR bus speed even w/o DDR RAM, but the Duron is plenty fast. I think the true 200MHz FSB will only come if you pair it with DDR, but considering that both DDR and RDRAM dont really provide the promised performance boost, I really wouldnt worry about DDR right now. Its just a waste of money in comparison with KT133A chipsets and PC133 SDRAM. ------------------ Whaazzzupppppppppp! Hey guys, what do you think could be improved on Win2k?
Brian Frank replied to pr-man's topic in Software
The ability to actually use the speed transfers of ata66/100 on a normal basis. That way, you wouldnt need to get scsi for super speed. I know sp2 has the actual fix for ata100, but I'd like to see Windows and programs take advantage of the hard drive's higher transfer rate. -
Unless you are having problems with your computer, DONT CHANGE ANYTHING regarding IRQs. The IRQ sharing has to do with ACPI. You may be able to disable it in bios, or you can change it in Windows, but be warned--YOU WILL HAVE TO REINSTALL WIN2K. I made the same mistake a month or so ago. Computers with ACPI will automatically share a ton of devices under win2k. Theres nothing really easy you can do about it. Just let it be. You cannot change IRQs with ACPI installed under win2k. Trust me. If you want more speed, get a P3 and/or more memory. 128 is the minimum you want under win2k-ive tried it with 64, it doesnt work too well-but more is better. Ive got 8 devices on IRQ 9, and things work fine and dandy. ------------------ Whaazzzupppppppppp! Well this isnt really my problem, but a friends. He got the Radeon to use in his Gigabyte GA-5AX and there are some major problems. DVD will play, but it'll lock up after like 10 seconds. Same deal with 3dmark. And any games requiring hardware acceleration won't work. He's running Win98SE on it. Any info would be great.

secondary video card with Tv-out & 2K compatible?
Brian Frank replied to INFERNO2000's topic in Hardware
Good luck finding one with the specs your asking for. The closest thing to your price range would be ATI's all-in-wonder value edition or tv wonder value edition (it's one of those two). You may just be looking for something that doesnt exist. Look at a trade show. -
Its best to get all your drives before you install Win2k because if you add new drives later, sometimes Win2k puts them in a really weird order. Get your video card too (duh) and monitor. Also Id strongly advise getting some more memory when you get a chance. 128 is good to get you going(the bare min you want to have running 2K)bump it up to at least 256. But youve got enough to get you running at a reasonable pace-so ram isn't really that important right now. Running that T-Bird, get a good cooler, cuz those babies get really hot and adding an extra case fan wouldn't hurt either. Sounds like youre coming along though. Despite being virtually non-existant right now, 3dfx cards seem to work well with just about every OS. Yeah, the V5 might not be as speedy as the GeForce 2, but I've never had problems running a 3dfx card. That V5 is a steal, man. The lowest Ive seen it is for $200. Dead Cats is right, the V5 DOES NOT have video out, just one svga output. However, the V3 3000 AGP & V3 3500 (AGP) only have TV connections, but only the V3 has video out.
-
Very interesting, but 3dfx's explanation for your problem with only using one of the VSA100 chips is cause there not unified, so windows only thinks you have half of what is really there but it will still use it. The V5 6000 (if it really exists) is supposed to fix that.

The best way to do this is to install Windows Me on the second hard drive, then install Win2k on the first partition. Under Win2k you can set up the computer to display a list of OS's for a certain length of time before it boots the default OS which you can set. You could also try the Win2k repair option too. IF you decide to do a clean install, follow the sequence I gave earlier, Win2k should automatically set the default time till it boots into Win2k for 30 seconds. To change the default time and OS right click on my computer, go to properties, click the advanced tab and go to the startup and recovery option, then set it up to your liking. I have a test computer that I try stuff on, and I got this out of a Win2k IT resource book. They say to install Win9x first then Win2k. Try running the repair option first, it works on 98, so it should work on 2000. Good luck ------------------ Whaazzzupppppppppp!
