Hey, dont knock 3dfx,theelviscerator!

Try heading over to AMD site. They've got a patch for Win2K under T-Birds and Durons. It's really small. I cant remember exactly where it is, but it's associated with the Athlon and Duron procs.
-
Should be okay, I'd definately bump up the RAM to 256 or even 384. Plus the RAM you need is dirt cheap anyway.
-
Go with the Athlon, or if your really strapped for cash the Duron (supposedly it's rated on average 90% of the Athlon). Right now the only two probs with AMD chips are heat, just get a good hsf at least a Cooler Master, and gaming issue under Win2K but AMD has a patch on there site. Either go with the Asus A7V or the Abit KT7 they're the only ones you want if you're going for performance. If you want to OC an Intel you have to do it by the FSB, while AMD's chips have to have the L1 bridges closed. Just use a #2 pencil to do this. Unless you want to have a dual proc system or don't want to worry about the CPU getting hot, don't go with Intel right now. Nothing wrong with Intel, but performance isnt coming from them.

Oh, yeah oxide, dont be an @$$.

Here, I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. Asus A7V Duron 600@680MHz (6x113) 384MB PC133 SDRAM Maxtor 20.4GB ATA100 (Really Quite HD) Toshiba 12x DVD Samsung 48x CD-ROM USB Zip650 CD-RW USB Zip100 Guillemot Maxi Sound Fortissimo sound card (for $50 it's really good) D-Link 10/100 NIC SIIG IEEE 1394 3-port Voodoo 4 4500 AGP (I like 3dfx, SO SUE ME!) Kleer 17-in monitor MS Intellimouse Optical (If you have pets that shed, get one) UT GOTYE 2nd CD slows it down a tad, but I love chaos UT. I use WinDVD cuz it's got better support (so Im told) for AMD procs. Question, how high do I set the voltage to OC the Duron 600 if I use the jumper settings. Right now, Im doing this OC with the BIOS.

Check your BIOS settings. You might have set something that could've stopped you from a normal shutdown. If you can't find the exact problem, try setting BIOS to the defaults, and then go from there. Also check with Abit and see if they know anything.

I don't know what your specs are, but you should be okay if you've got a 300 watt power supply. Also, check to make sure all the cables in your system are fully plugged in. Trust me, just one cable can really screw up your system. Are you sure that your friends power is okay there. Do you have all the computers plugged into the same circuit at your friend's? Like I said earlier, you should be okay if you've got a 300 watt power supply. If not go buy one. AMD's processors use a lot of juice especially the Athlon T-Bird.

Okay Im running W2K SP1 on Asus A7V Rev1.02 bios 1004 on ata100 controller with Maxtor 20.4 GB ATA100 HDD,384MB PC133 SDRAM, Toshiba 12x DVD, Samsung 48x CD, Iomega external zip100 and Zip650 CDrw both usb a scanner, Duron 600MHz, network card, firewire card,Guillemot Maxi sound Fortissimo sound card, Voodoo 4 4500 AGP. I think both these two problems im having go hand in hand. I have 8 or 9 devices using IRQ 9, but even with bios PnP diabled i cant change the IRQ's. Also when I play DVDs the sound skips for a couple of seconds. No scratches on dvds, cleaned out drive with cleaning disc, still bad. If i dont reboot and put a cd or cd-rom in gives me blue screen with "thread not found" What is this crap. I didn't have this problem before in Win98.
-
Well I think I fixed all my problems with reinstall. DVD playback fine, maybe cause i used WinDVD instead of PowerDVD. That was probably the cause of the blue screen and bad playback from the DVD. I know ive got a voodoo 4 but i like the late 3dfx's products--so sue me.

To all A7V owners: If things act funny, i.e. you cant boot from cd's, try resetting bios to the defaults. Everything shoud be ok. This saved me from taking back my mobo.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, when i booted up, my system decided i didn't have a mouse or keyboard So I had to reload.
