The: What Computer Part did you buy this week thread
Brian Frank replied to DosFreak's topic in Slack Space
I picked up a Lite-ON 40x burner today...of course, my folks are giving me crap about it. Sorry my current one is trash (locks up any PC it's in), or I wouldn't have bought a new one. Sheesh. -
Software is a big thing here too, specifically games---especially since Loki was going under last I heard, and they were the major porter of Windows-to-Linux games. I also like the freedom to buy something off the shelf at Best Buy and not have to worry if I'll be able to get it working under my OS. If I were to have a Mac, I'd want that defunct Mac Cube---that was soooo awesome.

The ATI's drivers are bad has been a pointless argument since at least December. ATI has shaped up big time in the driver arena. Anyone that's still pushing the ATI drivers sucks campaign hasn't used one of their cards in recent times.

Thank god, no. The person responsible was on vacation all last week so when my boss found out I hadn't gotten mine, all he could do was wait. It should be on my next paycheck or so. -
I don't mind having alternatives, but it bugs me when the supporters are so zealous as to completely ignore other possibilities. I don't have anything against Linux, OS X, but they are just not the best for me.

LOL! I didn't buy any PC parts this week, but I did a few weeks ago. I should be gunning for a new PSU and burner in the next few weeks whenever my bonus gets to me (pending on the blasted accounting department) -
It might work well if it's like a turbine engine on a plane, with 1 fan rotating clockwise and the other counterclockwise. This is also with both fans designed to push air the same way, though.

I spend too much time on message boards to have time for silly chatrooms:p

I'm very excited about the nForce 2. I use an nForce 1 motherboard in my box and it is excellent. Yes, it's got a high level of integration--but it doesn't suck like most integration we've seen. I only need to use a video card, as I got a board without the integrated video. I think the nForce 2 is gonna give Via, SiS, and ALi a serious run for their money. The only company I think that's really gonna be a problem is AMD and their 8000 series chipsets. 2nd, for all the people who gripe about there not being a fast and stable platform for AMD can seriously shut the hell up now. nForce is the answer, and while it got off to a rocky start, it's the best chipset for just about anything, save heavy overclocking--though this could be the mobo companies getting used to a mobo chipset from nVidia.

The people whose PC's I've dealt with have been pretty good---but then again, I'm not doing this on a daily basis, more now and then, off-to-the-side deal. -
For a strictly office machine, Win2k. If it's a multipurpose machine or a gaming machine, XP is better IMO.

AGP was developed because the video cards were sucking up the PCI bus. The solution was to give the video card it's own place. PCI video cards are fine, but they're being held back by the PCI bus. To get the biggest benefit for gaming, a motherboard with an AGP slot would be the most ideal. None of the current top-tier cards use PCI, and the ones that make the transition get choked big time.

You're buy 8000RPM delta's, Alec?! Gonna build you a jet plane or something? -
There should be an option on the left-hand pane for the Windows Update Catalog. You should be able to manually download everything from there. The bad news is, you'll have to manually install them all yerself.
